Okay, how about we turn the story in a direction so that the NMO is destroyed so all the mushrooms have to set off and build a new society or something.
Or we could have NMO become a High School and have Sano and Nova start an SOS Brigade or something silly and random like that.

Dzx9 exclaims, "ARGH!!!!111 DAT HERT!!!111" In his fury, he finds a spikey shroom that had just crawled out of a deep pit after years earlier jumping into it to avoid a rabies infested bunnies assault. The shroom celebrates, "I'm fre-- WAIT WTF R U DOING!!!!111" DZ picked him up and ate him in a futile, yet desperate attempt to kill his foes. DZ then shrunk. Mushroom-sized.

Now that DZ was Mushroom size he was definitely no match for Fungus Toppa Gurren Mushroom. The massive Mushroom mech bent down and grabbed DZ within it's giant fingers, and then flicked him away like a grain of rice, DZ flew far beyond the horizon, they say he became a satelite, forever to spin around the earth at the speed of light.
"Hooray! Sano and Nova have saved my NMO!" shouted Jake with glee as he turned to see the NMO building crumble to the ground, "OH NO!" Jake cried as he saw his life long work fall to nothing in an instant.
"Uh... Whoops..." said Sano as the Fungus Toppa Gurren Mushroom stood above the wreckage that NMO had become, "Not my fault!" exclaimed Sano as the Fungus Toppa Gurren Mushroom turned and began sprinting off into the night, a thunderous quake with each step it took.
"That guy ruined the NMO, after him!" shouted Jake.
All of the Mushrooms made chase, as they slowly slid across the ground at a slugs pace.
