His colouring is blue. He's Depressian.

Sonic needed an "evil" counterpart. Shadow fit that roll. That's enough hedgehogs for me. Sonic, Shadow, and Amy.

Silver just made me think, "... Great. ANOTHER Sonic character."

Exactly. But like Alec said, he never needed an evil counterpart. Shadow is completely contrived and unoriginal. It's great Sonic has lots of characters, but there doesn't need to be multiple fast hedgehogs. Amy is annoying as #####ing hell, but at least she's not forced on us enough to have a lead role or story center around her. Yes, you had to go through her story in SA, but it was easy and quick. Shadow has his own game, for chrisseggs, and it sucks out loud.

Well they could've gone a lot better with it, but I liked Shadow when he first popped in. He just happened to pop in when Sonic games started to suck.

Sonic didn't NEED an "evil counterpart." He had a villain.

Can't think of the word, and I'm too lazy to think, but I always wanted there to be one in Sonic. Shadow was it.

Same for Mega Man. Mega Man had a villan too, Dr. Wily, but Bass popped in and fitted the role well.

I think the word I'm looking for is antagonist.

EDIT: Actually, I think Shadow is the LAST new Sonic character I like. There's E-123, but he was... I dunno. Meh. In general, I don't like looking at the cover of a Sonic game and seeing a face I don't recognize. They have TONS of characters as it is.

Shadow didn't have to be contrived, though. Seriously; Memory loss? Check. Dark colouring? Check. Thinks he's the best evar? Check. Was experimented on in a lab? Check. Emo themes? Check. Dark powers that use purple and black effects? Check. Throws the word Chaos around like it's nobody's business? Check. And it goes on.

I mean, he's basically almost a gay hedgey Wolverine getting his emo on. It's like Dark Claw, the Amalgam Universe combination of Wolverine and Batman.

Wait, I know that sound... it's the sound of getting old.

Shadow is all those things because of the age range that his character targets. If they don't appeal to you, you're probably not part of their marketing demographic.

Nothing teaches young children counter-culture quite as well as pop-culture does.

When Shadow hit the scene I was in the demographic, I'm pretty sure. And I didn't think he was cool then. Sonic didn't need a rival, that's what Knuckles was for. And where Knuckles is totally awesome, Shadow is completely trite.

And that was where they lost you. Sonic has always been aimed at a certain age and/or maturity level. As soon as you cross the bridge and see what's being peddled as a shotty biproduct of market research, you've officially escaped their target market.

I'm not defending Shadow as a character, I'm only suggesting that you're maturity level outgrew the archetype.

I'm entirely sure it has, and I get the whole idea. They market this type of character in almost everything that's targeted towards kids. Still, Shadow smells.

Yeah, but you can't deny that the kids love it.
Some times I wish I were young and impressionable again.

And then I remember things like Shadow.

I liked Shadow when he first hit the scene at least. I hated the fact that they tried to kill him off, so they had to make him pull a Zero and have "lol, amnesia".

And I love Knuckles by the way, but he wasn't exactly Sonic's rival. They've stayed friends since Sonic & Knuckles. I'd say Metal Sonic is more of a rival to Sonic than Knuckles.

Eh. He doesn't appear in Sonic games as much as I'd hope for. It's like they're going in all the wrong directions with it.

Wait, what's this topic about? Sonic Unleashed? Yeah, that's a prime example right there.

DID YOU EVER PLAY TRIPLE TROUBLE?
No? I don't blame you.

But Knuckles was Sonic's enemy for a good two games prior to S&K (or something like that).
They're not exactly friends even now. More like friendly nemisisisisisisises.

I'd say they are more like the two co-workers who don't get along, and whatever they do, they do well. Just Knuckles does the wrong stuff sometimes, as he is gullible.

Well yeah, I forgot about the dumb little fights he was tricked into in Sonic Adventure.

And I might've played Triple Trouble, but cared less since it was a GameGear game.

I now have a mental image of an echidna and a hedgehog wearing top hats and monocles with a glove laying to the side of the hedgehog as if it has just been slapped.

The caption reads: "Very well, I accept!"

Thanks.

"Dungeon" is another big one.

"Restaurant" is another one for me, just because I always used to spell it wrong when I was younger. It was like the only word I had trouble with.

I call shenanigans. PB sandwiches? I don't think so. Furries only eat PB with the J.

I understand how mystery can be.

I can't.

I think "phoenix" is spelled weird. And "judgment".
