Post favorite programs and such here.

I have a PC for the first time in years and I need to know what I need to have.

Tag & Name - mp3 tag editor that is truly godly.  That's what I've been using for years and it has great updates.

Explorer 2x - file browser program with 2 panes.  It's superior to window's native browser in every way.

IrfinView - image viewer that does quick thumb display with some good sorting options (even if I don't use that function of it often)

Open Office - freeware alternative to the #####tacular Microsoft Office (especially the new 07 lets make the program unusable with a complete ##### new interface version).  Full compatable with normal office document file types.

Winamp - MP3 player with excelent library options and EXTENSIVE personalization options.  You can arrange panes and collumns in about any order setup you like and it has plug ins for about anything you want to do/add on.  It makes iTunes look like the garbage program it is.

That should be a good start for you.  Most of those are all freeware too.

If I'm listening to music, I use Winamp.

If I'm tagging my MP3s, I use MediaMonkey.

If I'm chatting, I use Trillian (Astra)

If I'm browsing, I use Firefox.

I use Thunderbird for E-mail

Sunbird for scheduling

and µTorrent for, well, torrents.

I like office 07 just fine. It took some adjusting, but it's significantly more intuitive.

Sometimes I wonder if you're just doing the old man thing and disliking something simply because it's different.

FRAPS is still king as far as I can tell, so if you've ditched that idea you may be out of luck. Another choice is HyperCam 2.

Oh boy, This will be fun.

ThunderBird - My favorite mail client...a must have for people with G-mail!

Speedfan - As a geek, You must have total control of your computer at all times...That includes controlling your internal computer fans and reading tempurature.

Free Download Manager - The best on the web for Downloading stuff!

Spybot S & D - Nothing works better for free.

PC tools Anti-Virus - I hate AVG, this is prettier and works better.

Abword - Best lightweight word-clone.

CCleaner(Crap Cleaner) - Excellent for deleting internet temp files and fixing registry problems.

Trillan - Who needs Yahoo IM?

DOSbox - My main program that sits happily on my desktop. I love DOS games.

Audacity - Great sound and music editor! I mix up ringtones and my songs on it.

P2k Commander - Anyone with a Motorola phone needs this.

Maxthon 2 - IE is unsecure, and Firefox is slow, this is the best browser for the dial-up user.

VLC media player - Better than Winamp...Its more free and plays DVDs.

I forgot to add:
Opera - web browser of choice, it beats Firefox like a red headed step child
Trillian - yeah, best chatting app as it runs all the others.
µTorrent - best torrenter I've used.

Long story short here: Use whatever browser you like best, since it's clear there's no consensus, and I highly doubt there ever will be.

The only consensus seems to be Firefox, really. Which is no surprise. I have no idea why Mozilla's Camino isn't as good as it's Mac Firefox. Why even bother making Camino other than I like the icon and name? Oh yeah, that's a good enough reason for anyone  to do anything.

Firefox is definitely the thing, mmm-hmm.

Paint.NET - Free, decent Windows-based 2D graphic editor, but not as good as
GiMP - Free, good GNUPL Windows/Linux 2D graphic editor
Blender - Excellent 3D graphic editor, but a little slow since it's interpreted
AVG - Pretty good antivirus software. Haven't had any problems while it's been up.
DOSbox - DOS "computer program of dubious legality", good for playing old DOS games
WinAmp - This is good and has been suggested so go get it
DeamonTools - Allows you to create virtual drives from disc images (iso, cue, ccd), which is handy

Can't think of anything else.

Daemon Tools is like KIND of handy. I have it on my PC but it's not as useful as it pretends to be.

Macromedia Flash - sure, technically it's Adobe now, whatever... I love drawing in it
Audacity - good for quick audio edits
Limewire - for some reason it doesn't work anymore for me, but it was fun while it lasted
Finale Notepad - kind of cool but I don't really use it much
Quicktime Pro - worth the money for the upgrade, trust me
MegaMan Effect - now all my software starts as if it were a MegaMan boss, complete with the jingle and 8-bit cheesiness!

No, I don't seriously use that MegaMan Effect thing, but that's what this thread reminded me of... hehe.

Useful if you use a lot of disc images.
Very useful.

It could be implemented a lot better. Mac OSX and [I think] Linux use disk mountable images all the time instead of executables and I find them about a thousand times better.

I don't know about newer version of Daemon tools but they should work more like that 'cause I found it odd and I think I remember it being a bit buggy.

When you use Windows XP, it is a wonderful program.
Linux needs some special programs to do it, but it is possible.

Side note:
OSX is the worst operating system I have ever used.

I have nothing good to say about it.
It hogs memory for graphic effects, it has a nonsensical default directory structure, it is completely incompetent for a user who wants to customize things, it is impossible to manually configure many network-related options, the mouse is set by default to "unbelievably slow", there unnecessary processes running (besides the graphical extras).

I fail to see how it is useful in any regard.

Also the current Mac keyboard and mouse are colossal failures of ergonomic and competent design.

I did use it on XP, I have no need for it otherwise.

I have no idea what you mean about the directories in OSX. Customization is easy enough for me but I'm assuming you want a level of customization that's more in depth than mine. I don't find that network-related options are actually hard to configure at all, they're just pretty different from the PC.

I do agree that the Mac keyboard needs tweaks (like the whole backspace and delete thing, that's so stupid) and you're out of your mind if you don't use a Microsoft USB mouse on it, unless it's a laptop like mine in which case the trackpad is fine. I also agree about the RAM hogging, but disagreeing with that is akin to lying.

Of course, the the original OSX was quite ##### compared to the newest two, and I run 10.4 (current top of the line is 10.5). For what I do, OSX is perfect but you do programming and stuff that I doubt any version of OSX lends itself to easily.

I really think it depends on what you have and want out of your computer. I personally can't stay confined to Mac or PC and have to switch back to Windows every once in a while (except the XP on my PC is currently beyond garbage). Also when you're used to one thing, it's harder to accept the other, that's my main observation of people using the Macs we have to use for our work at school; They'll try to do something really easy but do it wrong because it's just a little different and then cuss out the Mac like they aren't the ones being moronic, but that's for really simple things that they are obviously being completely anal about.

I hear stuff about VMware from others, is it good?
It lets you boot an OS inside of an OS in a virtual environment, I might use it to try linux.

Look for solo antivirus.

If you have something, it's likely to find it.

And deletes it, upon you okaying it.
