It proves I live in the capital city of an officially bilingual nation, which is an asset. Pretending to know French in Southern America is Gaytown, USA. Population: Sano.

It just means that you don't know French, and Mike does.

And trying to call him GAY for being bilingual is pretty queer.

I got it, but I thought posting "SANO, NO SANOING" would be kinda dumb.

You don't even need 12 years of French Immersion (which would be a complete waste of my time, as I live in Vancouver), just up to French 10 standard, IIRC.

I disagree. You lose a lot of your french skills in a year if you don't have to speak french at all, so the more you learn while you can is good.

French is not something a Vancouverite is likely to employ very often :D Tourist french will do if I ever find myself in Québec, anyway.

And I disagree again. I've spent over a year without french and could write it with the same fluency as ever.

I guess I don't realize sometimes that French is a lot more important in Ottawa than a lot of the rest of the country. Dhurr, go figure Mike!

Writing =/= Speaking. I don't have much problem writing at immersion level, but it gets harder to think quickly enough to speak at that level.

Mikero's right. When I'm not in college, I work used to work (they just got rid of the shift that I was on) at a produce factory that employed people who spoke all different languages, including a lot of Spanish-speaking people. I haven't taken a Spanish class for six years. If someone wrote down a sentence or order for me, I could get the gist of what they were saying. If they said it to me, it would take my brain a moment to not only figure out what they were saying, but to put my thoughts in a basic form of Spanish so I could respond and not look like a complete idiot. You need to keep learning this stuff, or at least continually be around people who speak it so you can still at least understand it for years to come.

It's short for...

"Well, if it isn't the pot calling the kettle black."

Pot = Black
Kettle = Black

It means you're a hypocrite.
