I'm surprised there wasn't a topic already.
God, SMG is a work of art, it seriously made me feel like I was a wide eyed child again, playing Super Mario 64 on my shiny new N64 for the very first time, a really magical feeling on account of it being the first game I ever played and all.
I was afraid the whole game was going to be like the last level you play as Knuckles (maybe it was Rouge, but whatever, the space one) in Sonic Adventure 2, with all those sphere shaped planets that turned the controls into poop. Thankfully the controls of which way to go were only a small annoyance at only a few points.
The art direction and concepts were beautiful and true to the Mario style, ya know, make everything adorable, make epic explosions happen, a few epic boss battles, et cetera.
How about that soundtrack? One or two songs that got annoying, most of 'em were just hum-alongs, but there were actually a few that made me stop and go "Wow, that's some good music.", I mean absolutely brilliant music that really makes you feel like you're on some awesome adventure.
Difficulty? Well, there is some to be desired at some points, but a few points were challenging. I mean with the added challenge of Daredevil Comets giving you only one health unit made it difficult at a few points. Some of those Purple Coin Comet levels were pretty difficult when you had a time limit.
So, how about Bowser, wasn't he about a million times bigger in Sunshine, and a lot less epic? I mean Bowser boss fights seriously felt dramatic, the music was awesome and Bowser seemed like he was actually a powerful foe even though most people could overcome him the first or second time. Baby Bowser... Koopa Kid... Bowser Jr.... Bowser's Son's boss battles were far less interesting to me though, boring, tedious, easy.
Overall the game was amazing, you guys will agree with me this time right?

The reason there isn't a topic is because we already discussed the hell out of it in "what game are YOU playing?"

Well we didn't have a topic that really specialized on it. This one does.

The game has almost everything I could possibly want in a videogame. I enjoyed it thoroughly. And this is the only game that I've ever been interested in buying the soundtrack for.

Initial response: "lol"

FLUDD's hover device destroyed the entire point of platforming.

Eh...this game could've been better if THQ developed it.

Too bad, I guess.

Anyway, Fludd should have been limited to a quarter of the stages, or something like that... it was the over-reliance that stunk the funk.

There's something so entertaining about running around on a giant 8-bit sprite of Mario, as Mario. The game's so odd yet enjoyable.

It's just a shame that it'll be another eon before another proper Mario game.

Nintendo do the opposite of Capcom and don't re-use great engines.

Capcom overdo it a little bit, though.

;_; Every time I hear about Galaxy I want to play it even more.

I've never really understood why so many people have a problem with the FLUDD device. I thought it was really quite clever, and brought an aspect of mobility to the standard Mario run & jump that flowed quite well. The levels are designed around use for it quite nicely.

Then again, I love Sunshine, so whatever.

Me and you both, Chron! w00t!

Nintendo do the opposite of Capcom and don't re-use great engines.

Believe it or not, but Nintendo re-used the Super Mario 64 engine for Zelda: OoT. As you can tell, though, it was heavily tweaked.

I really did enjoy Sunshine a tiny, tiny bit more than Galaxy, if only because of the music and scenery.

It's amazing that the 3-D Mario games are always able to attain such wonderful soundtracks. It really is, especially with game music quality nowadays.

Right, I know that they do re-use things, I just mean they could afford to make more than one Mario per console.

Engine development is costly, so they try to use as much old code as possible to help things along
They could totally make more games per console, but developing the ideas... graphics...
... music...
All very time consuming and costly.

Honestly, I'm happier with the sparse interval of the games, since it means we get more quality.
Unlike certain developers that spew out game after game without regard to long term cost benefits of developing a superb game.

Certain developers.
Also known as Capcom.

I think that its a good thing, all the time between games.

Really I would rather wait for a great  game than get a so so game sooner.

Personally, I think it was sweet realizing that this was the sequel to a game that came out ten years ago.

They could still reuse stuff and make one or two more good Mario games per console. It's not like they can only reuse jargon for one game per console and then the next Mario has to have totally mind blowing innovation.

There is no way that Mario Galaxy was worth a 10 year wait from SM64, or however many years from Sunshine.

I'd say the wait was worth it... a little...

Like I said, I still perfer Super Mario Sunshine but Super Mario Galaxy is a great game. It probably would've surpassed Sunshine, IMO, if it came before it. I guess it's just a nostalgia I still have for Sunshine.

I don't own the game. That's one of the reasons I didn't finish. I always wanted to but I didn't want to bother renting it or getting my friend to lend it to me again.

On that note.

My other friend, Robbie AKA CrappleJunktown (he was a member here for like a day years ago when I was in high school), came over today and he brought Mario Galaxy and we played it with the two player jargon and boy howdy is that a fun game. I don't say 'boy howdy' lightly. It's a lot easier with 2P since the game doesn't really change at all, it just lets the second player shoot (in addition to first player still being able to shoot), make Mario superjump (with first player help), and paralyze enemies and objects (like rolling rocks).

And Master Chief and his game can press lips to my--BOY HOWDY!

I wanted the Wii Play package because you're a fool not to get a 2nd remote that way if you can but they didn't have it when I went, so I'll get it if I get a third remote.

I want that billiards game damnit.
