People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wants to ban fishing, and rename fish "Sea Kittens"

This must be some elaborate hoax.
http://www.peta.org/sea_kittens/index.asp

Hilarious.

Everyone needs to read the storybook thing on that site.

But yeah, I'm trying to remember some of the other things PETA's done that made me laugh. I remember posting them here, so maybe one of you guys remember.

Sea Kitten tears add flavor.

Posted on: 19 January 2009, 04:07:16

I had the urge to do this: http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/sea_kittens1/step1

Live Up to Your Word to Destroy the Evil Sea Kitten Populace

The Fish and Wildlife Service's promotion of fishing is a glaring contradiction of its mission. Neurobiologists tell us that fish have nervous systems that comprehend and respond to pain, and that, when it comes to the ability to feel pain, fish are just like dogs, cats, and all other animals. Dr. Donald Broom, a scientific advisor to the British government, explains, "The scientific literature is quite clear. Anatomically, physiologically and biologically, the pain system in fish is virtually the same as in birds and mammals." Scientists have created a detailed map of pain receptors in fish's mouths and all over their bodies.

In light of these facts, I urge you to do the right thing to fish by whatever means possible, chop, fry, devour, and digest Sea Kittens at will. Their deaths will end their suffering and they provide nutrition for your body, not to mention their extremely delicious taste. Please understand that fish belong in the food pyramid and in my stomach. I trust you will abide by these wishes. Thank you for your time, and God speed.

Sincerely,

Phish N. Derfryer

(PS: Peta is freakin' ridiculous man)

Yeah, it's not so obvious. It needs explaining.

My dad did something like that. He's a big time christian freak, and hates anything related to witchcraft. He didn't like me watching Mickey Mouse put on a wizard's cap and have the brooms clean for him.

He also didn't like me watching Power Rangers or even the 3 Stooges.

Really, it's unnecessary.

EDIT: lol, wut?

There's a divide. Because a lot of this generation is doing big things globally and actually pretty altruistic stuff. A lot of them are really into fixing this world.

And then there's a lot who are all about money money money girls girls cash cash... let the champagne splash.

Trying to do big, altruistic things globally. By and large we really don't know enough about the environment to really know WHAT is going on; like global warming.

Also, PETA are idiots. Just because someone chooses to anthropomorphize an animal does not make them morally superior. If I evolved to eat nothing but nuts and berries, my teeth would reflect that. Fortunately for me, I have lots of teeth designed specifically for tearing into flesh, so as far as I'm concerned my dietary choices are justified.

If you chose not to eat meat or be a vegan or whatever floats your boat, that's fine. I don't judge people for choices like that. I DO judge people when they feel the need to ##### with MY meal though.

Well said.

There are some who think that from a scientific standpoint, the only reason why humans are as intelligent (arguable, heh) as they are today is because they meat.

Mostly fish, I think, but still.

If I remember correctly, part of their argument is that to obtain meat, you not only have to outsmart other animals out for meat, especially things which would just as soon eat YOU, but eventually you have to learn how to kill for yourself.

The way I heard it is that the proteins also help support higher brain functions, or at least brain size.

It's probably a combination, but in either case I think fish sort of solve it since they not only require some deal of intelligence to catch, but they are also very good for brain development.

I think they should go and try this argument in any country where they're happy to have ANY food.

If you're fortunate enough to be able to chose your meals, you should probably just shut the ##### up.

Trying to do big, altruistic things globally.

Well if I meant trying I'd have said trying. I've seen a lot of footage and read a lot of stuff about some really great things actually ARE going down. Not so much in America but whatever.

Well said.

There are some who think that from a scientific standpoint, the only reason why humans are as intelligent (arguable, heh) as they are today is because they meat.

Well yeah, protein. Just like evolving to use tools led to using fire led to cooking meat led to evolving further.

The way I heard it is that the proteins also help support higher brain functions, or at least brain size.

Nevermind, you got it :P

If I remember correctly, part of their argument is that to obtain meat, you not only have to outsmart other animals out for meat, especially things which would just as soon eat YOU, but eventually you have to learn how to kill for yourself.

I don't know. That could very well be true but it also seems like more of a made up reason just so people stop asking. It can also go into a chicken or egg scenario (it's egg, by the way) in that you wouldn't have to outsmart prey until you started eating meat, so if you can only do that BECAUSE you eat meat then how did you start eating meat in the first place blah blah blah wraparound blah. Also you'd have to outsmart things that would eat you whether you ate meat or not so I don't see how that's part of it, it's not like carnivores don't eat onmi or herbivores.

Yeah.
Well... I'm not sure carnivores eat other carnivores regularly outside of the sea.
I've never heard different; probably because hunters know how to dodge other hunters a little better rather than any taste preference, I guess.

Now carrion eaters... yeah, anything and everything.
