Stemming off of both Kum and Go and one of the other threads around here, what do you guys call it? I call it pop because thats what I grew up around, but it seems like people in the south call it Soda more often. I have no clue, but I'm curious to see the results.

I call it by name wherever possible, but really I don't give a #####.

Me either, just thought it would be interesting since we have so many people from different areas on the board.

I usually stick with soda. It is more common to do so in the Southern US, but I'm not sure why.
"Pop" always reminds me of my grandmother, who is from Maine. I've never been sure why it's called "pop" besides "the bubbles pop".

Soda makes sense because, you know, all carbonated beverages have carbonated water in them. Which can be called soda water or seltzer, once again depending on the area trend.

It's a vastly unimportant question.

It's definitely "pop" and that's what I grew up with, but I like saying "soda" more and I like how "soda" sounds better anyway.

It was originally "soda water", before it was bottled in 1892, at which point it was coined "soda pop"

Time went on, blah blah blah, and now it's dependent on your region.

Personally, I was raised in a household that called it pop, but I call it soda.

That's what it started as, that's what it is.

Besides, it only gained the pop modifier as a reference to the sound made when opening the bottle, so pop has always just been an onomatopoeia, rather than the name of a beverage.

It's a small thing, but it's drives me crazy when people call it pop.

It's like saying you have to itch an itch.

I use both interchangeably, been using soda more often recently so I voted for that.

I only really say pop when I'm trying to annoy someone.

Or if I've been around certain people.

I grew up learning that it's said as "Pop", so it'll stay as "Pop."

I say soda whenever I talk with a lisp.

To me they're just two words with the same definition. One might be more slang than proper, but it's still widely accepted. What's stupid to me is when I'm talking and I get rudely interrupted because someone has a problem with the fact that I said "pop". It's like, I don't care.

I don't give it a moment's thought when someone says soda, which is different from what I'm used to but not unheard of.

You know what I mean? Sure I don't mind discussing it, but don't understand when people get pissed off over this subject.

In the county in Kentucky I used to live in, Meade,  50-80% Call it "COKE."
At least according to that map.

And where my parents were raised, according to that map, It's "Pop."

I was taught, POP is what you call your father, but you drink SODA.

It's soda.

Probably Soft Drink. Or whatever name it's actually named instead of some dumb coverall name.

But let's get #####ing serious here poeple;

Britney Spears has a song on her "... Baby One More Time" album called "Soda Pop" so I think you're all DONE.

Mmm the soda pop,
Watch it fizz and foam
The clock is tickin' and we can't stop (Can't stop now!)
Mmm the soda pop,
bop shi bop shi bop
The clock is tickin' and we can't stop
Oooh oooh!

Someone close the thread before Britney's ten thousand venereal diseases get spread through people just talking about her.

Well, as stupid as the topic may have been, it still made me laugh, so thank you. But I will lock it as you wish.
