Which gems? I don't kno- OH! Thanks for pointing them out!

Well.. they're shiny... and I think they act as some kind of power supply doodad thinga-majiger.

It's the fashion for main characters, that's all

I think it states that it stores their central processing units.  CPU for short.

I don't think it states that anywhere.

Why would they leave something that important in the front of their heads? >_>

Axl: Gee, it sure it boring arou-- *smacks head against wall and dies*

First of all, it's not a gem, it's a plastic covering. Behind that are a few USB ports.

GAWD, NOOBS.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Mikero on 15 February 2008, 05:26:47
I think it rather obvious that they are just there because someone designed them to be there and made it look like they had a purpose. That's what we do when we design futuristic ships and such. The audience doesn't need to know what they are as long as they don't look horribly out of place. If it looks as if it's supposed to be there, you don't have to really know what it does and neither does your audience.

But my guess is they'd be sensors.

It's the Cyber Elf that they actually are. It's in there controlling a robot body like that alien that has the galaxy in Men In Black. When the robot body gets destroyed the cyber elf says ##### it and just floats around for a billion years until a mad scientist sucks it up a la Ghostbusters and makes it into a Live Metal and then that Live Metal digivolves into Trigger later.

Then they betray them for Supra Force Metal.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Mikero on 15 February 2008, 05:42:10
Supra Force Metal is made for the bodies of deceased Cyber Elves. The bodies retain a minimal level of residue from the elf's power after it dies.

Those gems are design choices in all reploids but X and Zero. Cain couldn't figure out what the hell it was for, so he just assumed they needed it.

It's actually a holographic pornography generator.

I'm glad he circled them in the pictures, to make them easier to find.

They obviously do something, since Zero was effected and possibly transmitted the Virus (aids?) to Sigma when he was (FAAAALCON) punched there. And Axl (the Japanese schoolgirl) was infected or something when he was attacked by what's his name... Lumine (tentacle monster).

I think they're USB ports. Or genitals.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Dopefish on 19 February 2008, 15:26:57
I remember it saying in the beginning of MMX1 that X's "gem" was a "eye" or camera. But since he has 2 eyes that does not make much sence.  :P

Maybe its for Wi-Fi internet access?

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Cherry on 19 February 2008, 16:21:56
Well, in any instance where the gem is damaged (Zero's in the MMX4 flashback, and Axl's at the end of X8), they shut down or collapse or whatever.  So I think it's gotta have something to do with their power source.

But, really... It's just a design thing Capcom's trying to inject use into.  Other Reploids don't have them and they function just fine.

The gem's are robot genitals. It's there where the virus gets passed.

Oh, no, no, no guys. I got it!

Now, what Cherry is saying makes sense... but it made me remember that sometimes Zero's will display a little W from time to time, right?

What if that's like some sort of debugging/HUD display for development and repair?
Makes sense to me.

Oh I get it now...

*Sees Dr.Cain trying to fix X*

Dr. Cain: Letme see...What!

*Dr Cain looks at X's Gem*

X's Gem-thingie reads: "Runtime error 1:900 can't read weapon drive".

Dr. Cain: Crap! Stupid Windows XXXP!

Hey I have question....Do Reploids run on Windows or Linux? I suppose since they can get viruses...They must run on Windows...or DOS.

The eyes are so he can look tough.

Well that did not work out to well, X is a sissy coward at times.

Infection is a hint to what they may actually be- I think they are a very sensitive, very important part of their design which can accept data and transmit data as well. Also, in the Zero series, we can notice both Copy X and Elf X emit a ring of (DNA??) data from their foreheads right where that 'gem' would have been.

Either way... the series has hinted that they are important in some way.

However... why does it seem that most of the humanoid-type-battle reploids only have them?

But as a parting gift you get a copy of X7 for cell phones.  ENJOY!

And the RMZ citation was just to add further 'evidence' that the gems obviously have some sort of important function.

Question: if you don't pay a hooker after you've had sex with her, is it rape or shoplifting?

And guys, I don't know why we're missing the most basic and rudimentary function that all robots must have: an mp3 player. Gems on the forehead, the player, the huge freaking ear pieces: headphones.

Come on, get with the program.

Just remember they are not IPods! I hate when people call every Mp3 player an "IPod".

Apple makes the most poorly built Mp3 players anyway. They are the only Mp3 players with an expiration date.

You can ask what the Gem is for just because it looks significant, but you can also ask "Why is Megaman blue?" "Why does he change colors when his weapons change?" "Why does Zero have hair?"

There are endless questions that result in one answer: Character design. The gem is there so that you will think that he looks cool. Period.

*funkill*

It actually would not be cool in real life at all.

It's obviously just so you know right away which power you have on. I don't think it ever happens in the cutscenes, comics, or tv shows.

They are the only Mp3 players with an expiration date.

What? I've had my iPod for two years and it works fine. And I drop it on the ground at least once a day (there's no good place to put it when I'm in the animation lab). If you're an idiot who can't not break stuff all the time then you're not allowed to talk about how long anything lasts.

I'm so sick of people complaining that video games and movies are "Unrealistic". I want someone to make a game that is 100% like real life and force them to play that and just that for all of eternity just to shut them up.

I've had my iPod Video since 2005, when it first came out, and in that time it's been stolen twice, found twice, dropped countless times as would be expected over the course of 3 years, and soaked in water when on a boat.

Works like a charm, albeit slightly scratched. I take care of my stuff, but accidents happen and so far my iPod works great and looks to continue doing so for years to come.

Yeah I agree. Ipods are extremely durable, but when you have the new shuffle like I do, you can pretty much say EVERYTHING breaks faster than it. It's basically a microchip and a headphone jack deep-fried in steel alloy, and there you have it, an indestrucltable Ipod.

Just to prove a point before, I literally "threw" it at a brick wall (more of a toss than a full on chuck) but none the less I still retrieved it undamaged and un-scratched.

It's charging right now ^^

In his defense (keep in mind this is likely the only defense he'll ever get),
"I don't know."
is not a fragment sentence.

Typing it as
"i dont know ???"
is a bit of a disgrace, though, and negates any further defense.

Obviously it's a gem. Retard...

Maybe the gems on there heads are made for scanning weapons from mavericks once defeated?

I agree... It makes sense, kinda looking like a light.  It could like, laser scan the weapons or something.[/weedsp33k]

Y'see, Axl shouldn't even be a main character. He's an oddball. If I'm not mistaken, X and Zero are both similar in character design. Likewise with the gems.

Axl is totally different. He should've been a helping reploid in the horror that is X7 and had just been killed off.

Again, it's just there for show. At the least, they're like headlights. They turn off when the car dies.

You mean "Axl shouldn't even be a character period" actually.

Anyway, again; I don't think it's a light, or eye, or anything. I think they just take in information. They take readings of crap. Or they're just gems, and that's the way it is. But they probably have a function. Robots aren't really made to have or into having frivolous luxuries.

Assuming the helmets can be removed, that's probably what it is.
Some sort of advanced sensor system. Might enable them to scan the surrounding area within a few feet to provide the sort of recon we get from our third person perspective in the game.

But I like the idea of it being a headlamp.

In X3, the upgrade Dr Light gives X lets him get radar images from satellites via the gem. He says it's a "sensor upgrade" or something to that effect. So the basic version might just scan in immediate area for hazards, or transmit a live video feed back to Hunter HQ so the Navigators can see what X and the others see.

Yeah, but Cliff is cool. Axl isn't.

X has a gun for an arm. In some cases, both of his arms are guns. The man can't even drink coffee without shooting something. No wonder he's a pacifist.

Zero also has a seldom-used gun for an arm, but he opts to use a laser sword. In a futuristic world of bullets and beams and stuff, he tears through things with a laser sword.

Axl just carries around a couple of pistols. They aren't even attached to his body.

One of these things doesn't belong.
One of these things is different.

If I could have the power to slap people over the internet, I would do it right now.

Axl, among his many, MANY, problems (Appearance, personality, THE FACT THAT HE'S ON THE SAME LEVEL AS X AND ZERO RIGHT OFF THE BAT, his wanting to bone X, that Reploid DNA bull#####, etc etc), he lacks a gun for an arm, and does not follow what has been a very awesome pattern and heritage.

That heritage?

Guns for arms.

It's like having your forearm turn into a ##### that can kill people, and I think we can all agree that's admirable.

Post by: Mikero on 3 November 2008, 23:23:34
I really don't see the point of Blu-Ray or care to. There's a point where I don't need or even want more special features on a movie. I really think it should've gone like how music went. Digital. Example;

Music
Phonograph cylinder > Gramophone disc > Vinyl > Reel-to-reel > 8-track tape > Cassette tape > CDs > Mp3 > ???

Obviously I skipped a lot of less notable advancements, but my point is just that it should move completely to something digital. I know it already has pretty much, since you can get a video of any movie, and some movies comes with a digital copy and there's netflix and all that jargon but I think my point stands. I just don't see the point of blu-ray other than HD. But I've yet to move into the HD realm so whatever.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Chron on 3 November 2008, 23:47:43
HD looks nice, and Blu-Ray movies are great, but I'm someone who cares more about content than I do video quality. So I understand that.

Blu-Ray is a fully digital medium, though, with its own codec (just like MPEG Layer-3 is a codec).

The disc is a portable means of storage for the digital data, albeit shielded by a metric #####ton of "security measures".

But I catch the drift that you mean downloadable, and they are, they're all just horrifyingly large.
Blu-Ray is a storage medium; it serves as the storage device for the encoded digital data.

The last non-digital video medium was the laser disc, which actually stored analog images (at least the wave form for composite video feed) on the disc itself.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Fatso on 4 November 2008, 00:26:42
Video quality is whatever it is for me (although it's nice, it is by no means necessary as long as I can see what I need to see), but audio quality is a necessity and is the root of my problem with online music vending. I didn't pay for a #####ty 128kbps MP3 (if I'm lucky it might even be stereo) that chunks out at the first cymbal hit. I payed for a song I can listen to. Send me the uncompressed audio, I'll handle the rest.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Chron on 4 November 2008, 01:57:46
FLAC is pretty decent for HQ audio.

I'm not one to particularly care about audio quality, either, as long as it isn't below standard or grating or whatnot.

But I can hear the difference between raw audio (WAV in this instance) and an MP3.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Fatso on 4 November 2008, 02:02:02
FLAC is only one step below raw in terms of filesize anyway, but for example the size of iTunes music files is such that they couldn't be any better than 192kbps, which is only borderline acceptable for me, which is why I've moved to self-encoding from raw instead.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?

I've noticed 128kbps being low quality more in recent years.  But anything at 192 or higher sounds good to me.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?
Post by: Mikero on 5 November 2008, 03:13:11
I never check the kbps.

If I get a crap sounding mp3 I either bear it until I buy the album, or delete it. But good quality mp3s on iTunes are fine with me. When I import a CD to iTunes, it still sounds almost exactly the same. And I only say "almost" because there's just the touch that it's become digital, which could just be my speakers/headphones themselves.

Title: Re: Gems on X, Zero, Axl head?

iTunes is one of the #####tiest music players ever made.  Winamp beats it by a mile in every possible way.  Ease of use, options, display, skins, orginization, etc etc...

iTunes isn't a music player, it's a portal to a music store, and it shows compared to actual music players.

I very much prefer Winamp to iTunes in every way, but I use iTunes because I have an iPod and that's the only reason why.

And I DO like iPods.

I hate iPods, but I need to listen to my music somehow...

Better than the iPod in every single way (http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=16999)

AND NO PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE, BITCHES - it's all optional extras like a CD ripper and video converter.

Damn, that looks nice.

... how much are iPods normally?

It varies from iPod to iPod, nano's go about a bill and a half brand new. They've been known to go up to 300 bucks.

iPod's look very nice, and they work pretty well(ignoring the iTunes coversion and #####), but too expensive.

I'm happy with my Zune.

My roommate has a Zune and it doesn't work at all with his Mac, so he's stuck with the same set of songs on them.

Anyway, from what I've seen, iPods are definitely the best of all MP3 players out there, unless you strictly just want the simplicity of listening to music. I have a handful of mini MP3-players that were given out to me as freebies for events and things over time. Including one that came with the Transformers DVD. And they all work just fine.

Winamp synches with an ipod just fine anymore.  Get rid of iTunes.

Explain yourself. How does that work?

Basically I use WinAmp to open single audio files, and for all forms of video.

But I use iTunes if I just want to open it up and have no idea what I want to listen to.

Another problem I have is that there is a large percentage of my music library that is DRM-protected because I bought them from iTunes back when my parents were giving my iTunes cards and allowances.

So, like, 25% of my music library would be forfeited if I switched. That actually REALLY pisses me off and has done so for a long, long time.

When in doubt, rerecord. (http://audacity.sourceforge.net)

Worth the time? Probably not. Viable? Hell yes.

That.  Also that is why I have never nor will I ever buy digital music.  It's gotten a bit better with the removal of DRM, but you still can't get full 320 kbps or variable bitrate music.  It's all still rather low quality.  Buy the CD.  Rip it.  Tag it.  It's not that hard.  If a CD does not exist, you have to take what you can get, but most digital only stuff can be found in pretty good bitrate.

To address your question though, you would just use the sync option in Winamp and it should work just like itunes/ipod do.  I don't HAVE an ipod so I've not been able to do it myself, but all indications point to Winamp having gottent iPod syncing to work just fine.  As for your DRM problem, there should be converters out there to remove the DRM, but past that I can't help you as I never bought any of that ##### and have never needed to convert said files.

But yeah, the DRM ##### is nothing but a tool to allow Apple to keep thier monopoly on digital music.  Would YOU switch servieces or players if all your music wouldn't work on the new player/platform?  Apple didn't think so either.  ##### Apple.

I'll look into the Winamp/iPod syncing.

As for DRM-removal, one of these days I'm going to go through and figure out which songs are DRM-protected and which aren't, and then go through the long process of converting them.

Or just reaquire them.  I'm sure you can get them from friends or CDs.  Hell, if I HAD anything you have that is DRM'd I'd send it to you out of spite.  Besides, you've paid for the #####ing song.  You have EVERY right to play it on whatever platform you want, dispite what RIAA lawyers want to legistlate.

There's actually a large amount of songs that I HAVE re-downloaded. I forgot about doing that, that would probably be easier than trying to convert them all. But yeah, I'll figure it out.

As long as you get rid of that iTunes garbage on your computer, that's all that matters.
