Title: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Snare on 2 December 2007, 20:54:41
That's right, what's MMM without the biggest thread ever? You DO remember it, don't you? Anyway, I'll kick things off with some stuff I've done recently.

Yeah, Pokemon is awesome again due to nostalgia, so here's a fake evolution of Pinsir I've made.

And next is some fully functional headgears for Ragnarok Online servers that I've made.

Still single-handedly my favorite topic in MMM history... I wasn't aware "you" were the one making RO headgears. Nice job Snare-chan.

Off Topic Question, How IS Essence RO? Would it be worth playing on?

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Snare on 3 December 2007, 00:02:39
Off topic answer- It's the highest rated midrate, I think. The GM, Tira is really cool and the server has been tweaked so much, it's the most balanced one out there, by this I mean, some classes have been buffed, others have been nerfed. There's a lot of nice looking customs too, I'd recommend it.

And sheesh, I'd never think my headgears would be known from there all the way to here at the MMM, wow.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Yubi Shines on 3 December 2007, 00:05:45
I found the site, and eh, the rates are too high for the gameplay I'm used to (the roleplay server I'm semi-helping with is planned to be 20x, and that's already pushing it for me), but they do look like they have a really neat setup. On the fence on this one.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Aresian on 3 December 2007, 00:10:33
I might hop on board. I'm trying to get used to lower rates again anyway, since everyone else I played with before would only do high rate. *sigh*

I'll let you know how it goes I guess.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Snare on 3 December 2007, 03:44:42
I'm somewhat hesitant to post this, but since there isn't many sprites in here I'll do it.

I was trying to make a new style of sprite for me to work with. I mean, remember those Gaia Online sprites I did of some Ragnarok classes? I wanted to redo them in this style, here's half a Whitesmith with no clothes on, you can see his boobs. http://snarey.250free.com/Newstyle3.PNG

The 8-bit megaman zero sprite actualy looks good, though I think it has too many colors to be 8bit.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread

You mean the Model O sprite? Actually that is a recolor/sprite-edit.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Majikn on 4 December 2007, 00:30:02
Orange Devil didn't put up his avatar to be criticized. You put up your sprite, Axl. And people are generally not going to like that it is more of a recolour than a sprite edit, so you should naturally expect people to point out that fact in their critique.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread

Not half bad.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread

OH GAWD NEW COLOR SCHEME

You should stick to one of the originals, like the purple Vile.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Orange Devil on 4 December 2007, 00:41:54
Not to mention that I wasn't even talking about your sprite. I was talking about someone's comment.  I didn't even know who they were talking about. Don't be so uptight.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Advent Akksul on 4 December 2007, 00:45:34
I'm not uptight. . .I'm confused who and what are we talking about?

About the Vile

Na, none of the Return Vile's kept their original colors, Besides a Black Vile armore is VERY much needed.

Everyone just chill, I don't mean to offend, I'm too tired anyway  :)

I have good examples of recolors, and that my friend is not a recolor.

Well, if you really think so, sure. I don't mean to outright say if it is or isn't. I see how much you've editted it, but I personally don't have the spriting skills to really judge the quality of the work. I'm just saying, the action of putting up any of your artwork is liable to be taken as an invitation to criticize it.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/robertlieu/angryknightLOL.gif) I wanted to try making a RO sprite from scratch for the first time I think it turned out good, a lot of people bugged me about the arms though, I wanted the arms to cross each other but I didnt really consider how the joints would be like, LOL. I think I need to take a class for human anatomy or something because I can't learn it on my own.

The most spriting I've done these days is for RO. (Right now I SHOULD be doing dwarf beards. I'll just keep procrastinating on that one.) There's this:

...Which was just grabbing part of a wing from an existing RO monster, shrinking it, and fitting it to a human sprite. So. Not really spriting, just shifting.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Chron on 4 December 2007, 01:53:06
I never understood much why people wanted winged characters in RO. Especially when the wings they use normally look like crap.

Those aren't bad for some reason, but maybe it's because they look like the right style.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread

Not my choice. Server I'm working with wants Avians for roleplaying, so I has to be making with the feathers. At least we quashed any stupid angel-demon character crap. Talk about a recipe for godmoding and disaster.

Also, thanks. :>

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Yubi Shines on 4 December 2007, 02:06:02
I've read roleplay sessions where the grand demon gets attacked simultaneously by about five people, the magician sets off spells that totals the city square, someone shoves a fist right through the demon's chest, etc, etc, and the demon still owns every single one of them.

And it was somehow legit every time.

Sigh.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread

That makes me almost happy I've never been on an RP server.
I can't help but be curious about it, though.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Yubi Shines on 4 December 2007, 02:16:15
Oh, normally, it's great. Gives you a reason to actually stay on the server after the hack-slash-hack-slash of levelling gets old, and there's a lot of genuine hilarity and creativity. But it also attracts a stunning amount of dumb and drama.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Mikero on 4 December 2007, 02:22:24
They should have armor on them. That would be sick.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Chron on 4 December 2007, 02:24:22
Armored wings, of course!
It's not like you can fly with them anyway.
Even if you could, the armor would make it so you can't.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Mikero on 4 December 2007, 02:44:26
First I thought they were part of the armor and thought that was cool. Read a bit and realized they were and that was cool. But if you're not going to fly with your wings, you'd want armor on them too. I see it working with like... Crusaders and such. Other classes would have leather or other jargon on them.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Chron on 4 December 2007, 02:46:21
It would be pretty useful, when you think about it.
It's like having two shields without needing two extra arms for them.

Could do a double-bladed class like that.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Chron on 4 December 2007, 15:48:51
Going to have to use a single base that's more detailed than *scoff* Pokeyman sprites.

I suggest Lunar type sprites.
They give a decent amount of detail, and they're simple.

Bottom row is a Chron sort of thing. (Made these myself by transpose)

Megaman sprites work just as well, though. But like not everyone should be megaman recolor #4XX

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Vinchenz Rock on 4 December 2007, 16:15:36
Lunar looks good, but a little too "cute-sie"... we should have an 8-Bit like DJ Sonic made.

That sprite comic had lots of potential... Damn procrastination.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Orange Devil on 4 December 2007, 18:54:56
So were really doing this? Sweet. I'm excited. So can we agree on a base sprite or something? Or even a base sprite style?

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Yubi Shines on 4 December 2007, 19:07:34
I think a general large head-tiny body 16-bit "chibi" style would work, so long as they were the same general height. Several games use that style, including the Pokemon ones that are being used for the MMM game. So plenty of potential variety while keeping with the basic proportions.

Mind you, if we're doing a comic, I'm making a whole new sheet cause that one I posted is too simple. Need... detail... and five hundred colours...

The megaman sprites aren't all that variable, if it were MM7 style for example, everyone would have the same 3 stances, bass, megaman, and protoman.

Well then since this is a sprite thread (though I will have my own, when I have time)

Here is a Sprite (ONE SPRITE!!!)

I call it, Model O!

>_> Yeah... I made one, long ago, which basically was your idea... but in the actual Zero series.

I realize that 8-bit games tend to use bright colours, but seriously, all allergy jokes aside, don't use the neon reds and blues and so on that make up the default MSPaint pallet. It never looks good.

Here are those sprites I talked about... the game is going to have ALL custom sprites... and it's pretty hard so I went with the simple look for everything... and this is the main character (so far), Michael:

Is that white bit the shine on the hair? If the shading is going to be as minimal as it looks, then it'd be better if it was left out. Currently it's like he's wearing a very small hat.

The thing that we really hate is you whining about it expecting us to have sympathy and tell you that they are good. That's not how you get better- you get better by taking criticism and learning things, for instance. you should NEVER mix 8-bit and 16-bit and you should NEVER EVER mix colored sprites with non colored.

I understand that they are being mean about it and I disagree with that. But still, you shouldn't take it so hard. That just makes it worse.

Okay. You just have to listen (in the sense that listening means using reading comprehension on posts);

Sprite mixing is never good, but well if you make them 8-bit then it would be better =P
you should NEVER mix 8-bit and 16-bit and you should NEVER EVER mix colored sprites with non colored.

Not this. This is 8-bit with 16-bit, with 32-bit, and all different kinds of stuff. You even mixed Gameboy Color sprites with the NES ones which differ graphically as well.

Also, I don't think anyone should start spriting with 8-bit. You don't learn much at all with 8-bit until later when you understand some spriting sublteties. Starting with 16-bit is a good start point, 8-bit is too simple to learn anything and 32-bit is too "complicated" (it's not really complicated but it is at first) to start with.

Microsoft Paint is all that I have used.

Photoshop is very good for three reasons: First, layers; second, much more than three "undo"'s available; three, perfectly saving a file into GIFs and PNGs without (when it comes to sprites) colour loss. I've never gotten used to spriting with it, however.

The bg of the sprite (transparent or not) also counts as a color. Usualy though the MMZ sprites dont acutaly have a full 16 colors in them, they have like about 8-12 colors or so if you really care about that stuff. Removing some of the colors will make it easier to fix the contrast, also make the last shade of each color darker, or something to make the shades more different from each other.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: preventerWIND on 17 December 2007, 03:34:46
S'cuse me?

It is a recolor, why? You just colored the sprite a different shade of red, added some white blotches, and just added a small helmet. Theres no difference really, besides, you barely even changed the hair.

So don't call us sad, you silly little boy.

We weren't talking to you or about those, however if you want to get into it yes they are little more than recolours. And the recoloured parts don't match the MMZ style both in bittage/shading and in colour theory. And I can see the few actual edits that aren't just recolours, and they are minor and poor.

And since you didn't make that sheet yourself, I'm expecting you not to go off and take it personally.

Starting to make edits for custom RO classes -- a dragoon, right now. Edits are going slowly, despite efforts to keep it simple enough that I can replicate them over dozens of sprites without exploding. Also, run-on sentence.

I dont really like how the pants look right now but the shading and colors on them looks good to me. Her right arm is kinda bleeding a bit into the pants, not really a problem but it might look a little better if you add some black/purple pixels in there.

Since working with 8-bit sprites is my specialty, I'm currently working on a couple sprites from the Gurren-Lagann series, if they go well I might make more. Heres the Lagann, the base was from 8-bit Eddie, the shoulders are a bit off and the walking motion is not that close to Eddies, the way Eddie walks is what I'm aiming for, as his whole body jiggles and shifts.

More edits will be done.. but for now..

Lookit'em walk! TEE HEE!

Custom RO classes you say? Is there a server where this is planned to be used? Always wanted to see who could produce decent custom classes, albeit Aeon is the leading competitor in such.

It means the body isn't 3D when the head is. It's because the shading on the body is only on all the outside edges which is a common spriting mistake.

It's not really capcom's fault. I forgot to mention that the contrast on the gray isn't good, since the blue looks like it has a thick black outline. You need to fix that. Add some black pixels on the grey too, so it'll fit better.

Axl's legs aren't dark, infact his legs seem to match it well, I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime. . .

this set is to closely resemble Axl's X8 running style and other extra stuff

[EDIT] it is actually the thong thing, I am adding a belt soon (after I get everything done)

They're a lot better than the stuff I saw before. They actually look like they've been edited so they seem different from an actual Zero sprite. Good job, keep it up, and always practise : D

Also, if you want to make the shooting motion a bit more Axl like and neato, I suggest putting in some recoil when the shot is fired.

Actually, he did have some recoil in X8 (didn't play x7 so I don't know), just like bass in MM&B.

Here's an example. Some recoil when shooting, and then after the 3 shot minimum he stops for a moment and continues again.

You will be added in less than an hour from now * I will be playing Mario Galaxy by then*

Anyway I have here another character, but is 100% scratch ignore the stuff under the word Ignore, in fact ignore everything outside the box

yep it's a 100% scratch MMZ edit. but seriously, could you explain why it look so much like a MMZ sprite, kinda sorta exactly.(looking at legs, vest, basic head shape, wait, everything)

Why not just crop it then?

Don't be a moron. If you are trying to be wise-ass, don't try it. If you were paying attention it is for Megaman Axl, which is in Zero Style. It is 100% scratch for Zero Series, so look close at the one on the right, notice how I said ignore the little Zero edit, the taller one is FULL SCRATCH

Crop, well I already took care of that, ignore the wings on Crescent or o his sheet

In fact I have another full scratch, his name is Radarman EXE. he is most recent, I JUST finished his design

It looks like a MMZ sprite, that's it.

Also, recoil for copy ##### is pretty bad. If you want to make it better, shift the legs, but keep the footing the same. I think that will work.

He should really only be moving his upper torso and his head a little bit. This is why animators have the practice of acting, essentially acting out whatever we're animating.

Post by: Advent Akksul on 2 January 2008, 08:30:42
I will fix that tommorrow.

But anyway how is my Radarman? and yws it is supposed to look like a Zero series character, THAT'S THE POINT!!!

WAIT!!! Make it slower, the copy shot never has rapid fire! you were animating the copy shot. How could I not notice that

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Mournson on 2 January 2008, 09:05:08
My bad, it's mostly scratch, but you can't tell me that the feet aren't from a zero sprite, even if you did make them, you copied them from a zero sprite, all the way down to the shading. now look, I'm not trying to be an ass, but that's what threw me for a loop when you said 100%, cause the feet are the same, which gives the illusion of the rest being the same. and you said nothing about the zero edit that's inside the box prior to reply #321

and for future ref. you don't need petty insults to get your point across, so, no terms like "moron" please, it just makes it look like you couldn't think of anything smarter than a common insult. not that I'm saying you couldn't, it just give that impression.

That wouldn't make it better either way, whats wrong is the single sprite that has recoil.

The feet were meant to be the same, if I change it, I'd be screwed. But yes it is 100% pixel by pixel. I use references to scratch, since I'm new to scratching.

and PW, slow it down he was going way too fast, the whole thing was meant to be slow.

Insults? Please, who insults now-a-days? Roasting is much better

Didn't upload these. Heres moar MMZ 8-bit. You hate the series, but you'll love the 8-bitness! You'll see! You'll all see!

Leviathan's not done. Due to lazy.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: MOX on 3 January 2008, 20:09:27
The 8-bit sprites look really good as they resemble their MMZ counterparts well, but they have too many colors and shouldn't have that black outline I think. You should view some of the other 8-bit Megaman sprites to use as a reference for color usage.

Edit: Scratch that, black outline's actually okay, but I think some of the MMXtreme sprites have no black outline so they can have an extra color to use.

2nd Edit: Okay excluding the peach, black, and white (since most of the 8-bit Megaman bosses use these colors in the NES games if that's the 8-bit style you're going for) use like 2 colors. Harpuia has green, yellow, and red. You should try to remove one of the colors and try to work around with that.

Fefnir from what I can see at x1 has two colors, red and yellow so he's fine. But on the gun there's also some gray, replace that with the black you used as the outline.

Phantom has Gray, Yellow, and Red. You should just replace gray with the color of the black outline too. On that ninja vanish effect thing I also see another lighter gray so there's actually another color. My advice is maybe instead just use white as a highlight, or addding either yellow or red might work.

Leviathan has Blue, yellow, red, and Turquoise. First I suggest you should just replace turquoise with your blue, you don't need turquoise in there. Then you should decide to eiether keep the yellow or red, you might want to keep red because of her spear.

Hope that helps.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread

I really think you shouldn't be copying big parts from the original navi sprites such as parts of the head, etc. You could at least try to draw them yourself, or edit them so they can fit the sprite better. Also the two sprites are just recolored sprites with parts pasted onto them, only thing that I can see you actually drew something is on the plant soul, but that's just three lines on the legs.

From what I see you didn't try to change any of the sprite features, Megaman's (or is it that generic navi guy in the games) shoulder pads are still the same, his boots are still the same, only edit to them is a color change and a few things added in. I suggest that you actually edit the shape of these features, or something so we don't have to see the same features from the original base on them. Just use the official souls for example, you don't see any of them using the same shoulder pads with a different color scheme (bass soul doesn't count because it smells), they do more changing than that.

I hope you're getting what I'm saying, I see nothing re-sculpted (can't find a better word) on the original bases, only things recolored and added on. I'm sure with the work you've done on your old sprites, you can do this.

You can't add shoulder pads on Megaman if the Bosses never had any

and it may look C+P but it's not the hair flops down his back and I originally gave him a pitch black face but everyone complained, so whatever, I didn't like this one too much anyway

I might as well show the others

Actually, they pretty much have to, since making them look a lot similar to the original bosses doesn't show much creativity. And if they made your styles look like the original bosses, that would be pretty disappointing, but really neat.

Perhaps the same could be said of all bosses(lol). But a lot of them look very different, personally I never remembered Flameman engulfed in flames and being made out of tinker toys. Gyromans yellow, and a transformer. Knightman has a weight problem, I could go on. I'm not denying some look very similar to the original, but the majority of the bosses look very different.

Haha, I remember it saying Legos as well, but at first I misread it as "preggos". I like the coincidence.

Also, I thought StoneMan.EXE's design was original. The one in the classic series was basically just a rock version of Guts Man. MagicMan.EXE... not so much.

They also raped MagicMan's character in NT Warrior.

It said Legos because I'm trying to change my signature by naturally having it evolve into other signatures that sound similar. Like a game of broken telephone, and at the end who knows what I'll get.

But my official stance on the "Legos" issue is as stated earlier.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Mikero on 12 January 2008, 04:40:15
Anyway the whole sig started as a riff on the Bhagavad Gita quote "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" and the misquote by J. Robert Oppenheimer during the Trinity test as "I am become Death, the shatterer of Worlds". Later translations of the Bhagavad Gita translate it as "Time" and not "Death".

The instruments are choice, yes. The people are off proportion. They should be at least 5-6 heads tall. They are currently like three and a half.

I haven't sprited in forever so I decided to do some pixel art and practice some dithering. It's a little sloppy since its a school night and I wanted to get it done, but I'm definately revising this so criticism is welcome. I've always liked to draw hoodies but could never get it right. It's 6 colors total with the background color.

The Priestess is slightly taller again, and has a new face.

And the latest is a Wizard, I know her arms look funny. And no, she is not pleasuring herself.
Woah these are pretty cool, keep up the great work.

I revised my old .Hack sprites of a character named Haseo. It's on the second page. I did stuff like removing and fixing some pixels in the body area, the most notable change is the hair which I think is a lot better and cleaner now. I also forgot to add the draping part to the second sprite so I added it in now, the shape of it bothers me a bit but we'll see how it goes.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: MOX on 4 May 2008, 22:34:38
Wind: I'd say the hair has good bounce but if the body has a black outline and the hair doesn't it tends to look weird. Plus the hair isnt saturated enough.

Nova: The colors look good since it would fit in with the games, but those two blue lines create a strange angled shape on his chest, unless you wanted it like that but it'd still look weird. His tri-pointed gold thing on his head is shaded so it looks round, i'm guessing you actually wanted it pointy, you shouldn't have the shading trace around the outline like that or else it'll look too soft.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: NovaMan XP on 4 May 2008, 22:49:46
I'll try fixing that now. Thanks, MOX.

Well, I just decided to curve the spike to the left. Well, here it is.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: MOX on 4 May 2008, 23:25:45
It looks more pointy so I'd say the curve looks fine, though personally to me it'd look good with or without it.

I did an example since I'm bad words, hope you don't mind. The dark brown on the skin you could just have it replaced with the dark parts of the gold parts to save colors, or you could keep it and also use the dark brown parts to help add a darker outline for the gold parts, hope this isn't confusing.

On the example I used the dark brown parts of his skin to help define the gold parts, and made his gold head piece's shading more flat isntead of it moving towards the center. My edit is the one on the right.

Yeah. It just seems out of place. Speaking of hands, some guy dislocated his elbow when breaking his fall on some cement stairs.

Back to subject at hand. I like the hair, that's original. And the suit isn't isn't a cheery color, like bright red or navy blue, like the other Ace Attorney's clothes. I've always found black and other dark colors attractive.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: MOX on 4 June 2008, 02:40:51
Haha, I was hoping no one would notice that. I was looking at my hand from a side view and used that as reference, then just felt like showing the other fingers and stuff. If I ever re-edit this sprite the hand would be the first thing to fix. (next to moving the shoulder closer to the body)

edit: Thanks The Otaku, though personally I thought that the whole color scheme was too monotonous so I just added the hair leaflet and tie design to give him more character.

Like Chron said it looks better, and the darker shade for the shirt is good too since the first sprite needed that.

Only thing I find strange is the shading on the shoes, and on her left leg the dark blue at the end of her pants bleeds in with the black of her left shoe and makes it look bigger than her other shoe. I think you should lighten the dark blue. EDIT: posted example picture to show you the area that I meant.

And he's kind of...Too young looking and his face looks too much like Link's...I mean this guy's supposed to be a "goofy, friendly fat guy" type guy. Oh well, I tried you guys.

Spriting the eyes with that detail at that size isn't easy.

Yeah, that's what I meant. His eyes look Linkish, which was almost the opposite of what I was aiming for. I might redo his eyes later, and I'll use his current ones for a different character.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: Mikero on 23 July 2008, 22:19:36
He looks like a fun friend but he doesn't have the "goofy fat guy" aspect, or he does but it's watered down by something. I'm not sure what, there's just a quality missing or not missing.

And yeah I think he has Wind hair.

You just blew my mind, Snare.

And yes, Nova, Sano did call me a Lan recolor, and he was the one who abused me for it the most.  But Mikero always blames the bandana for it whenever it's mentioned.

And no, Chaos, I did not base the attacks on DBZ, no matter how similar they were.

But yes, Nova IS a Proto Man recolor unoriginal NT Warrior-based name rip-off.

The first one is an blaaaacksmith, the second one is a huuuuunter and the third is a cheeemist!

The hunter looks asian because he's Payonese (game's equivalent of Korean). The other two are from Einbech and Lighthalzen (Europe) respectively.

I know you're not really interested in these anymore. But I wanted to let everyone know I'm done!  :D

So these are faceshots of six Ragnarok characters. I'm not too big on RO itself, I'm not patient enough for MMOs buuuut, everything else about the game fascinates me so that's generally why I've made these. Now I've touched a few of them up and made some changes here and there.

Okay so from Left to Right. Blacksmith, Rogue, Wizard (no poofy cape), Wizard, Priestess, Hunter and Alchemist.

Right, now I can start making Matrician sprites..!

Post by: saldite on 10 August 2008, 23:40:07
Hmm, not bad.
Better than I can do.

Alright, so I was in the wrong topic to be discussing this.
Basically I'm looking for helpful opinions and tips on my spriting.
This is my current completed sprite and also possibly my new avatar.

Also, still don't know why, but the thickness of the hair still doesn't show on this website for some reason. I have no idea as how to fix this.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: preventerWIND on 10 August 2008, 23:47:07
..KAY..

Well, first thing you need to understand is you can't mix the thickness of the pixels, like, look at the ear, the outline of the ear is made with a thick line, and the inside is made with thin lines. Keep it at one size when spriting.

Next is the proper amounts of color in the sprite, take a look at it's hair or its left leg. It also has something to do with thickness of the pixel again. I'm sure if you follow that one rule though, it would a major step up from what you have now. Color seems fine except for the blue jeans, it's lightest color is too vibrant.

Also, we got the WHOLE outline of the body, on the left side of the sprite we have black, and on the right is gray. Work on that too.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: NovaMan XP on 10 August 2008, 23:47:54
You should only edit it in its original size, if you don't it looks funny.

EDIT: Dammit WIND.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: saldite on 11 August 2008, 00:08:20
Is this any better?
Sorry, I'm still not that great at this. I personally think it looks fine.
(I was too lazy to remove the background this time.)
Also, I can't completely edit the pixels 'cause that would completely destroy the sprite.
That reason is also why I mixed the thickness in the first place.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: preventerWIND on 11 August 2008, 00:12:12
If you can't be willing to "destroy" the sprite then why bother making it? Or editing it?

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: saldite on 11 August 2008, 00:14:06
I'm kinda' lazy...
I'm also not very artistically talented so usually what looks good to me is utter crap to others.
Edit 1: I dunno'...maybe this just isn't for me.
Sorry to waste everyone's time.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: NovaMan XP on 11 August 2008, 00:33:07
Here, I tried fixing it. Now if you're going to edit it, edit it at this size so the pixels don't get messed up.

Otherwise, as of currently, I've given up.

My thoughts exactly except in Abe's head and mouth so not exactly exactly but you know.

I'm kinda' lazy...

Then don't bother spriting. Not to sound mean, if you're not going to patient and work hard then you're not going to get anywhere. Nothing in life is about talent you're born with, it's about talent to create and master for yourself. To be good at anything you have to earn it. Even prodigies have to work their asses into vapour.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: saldite on 12 August 2008, 03:01:02
I'm going with Abe on this one Dragster.

Most of what you said I already get. Nothing in life is free, it's all earned. I already know this. It's just when people constantly bash something I worked on and actually tried on it irritates me to the point of quitting. Yes, I'll admit I'm lazy, but when I do something that interests me or I feel is important I pour my entire heart and soul into the project. Despite the appearance of my current avatar and the 16-bit saldite, I actually tried really hard on both of them (I think I clocked around 4 hours for the 16-bit saldite). I want to get into spriting mostly 'cause I figured it'd be good practice for my desired career choice, which would be designing games. Hell, I'm actually working on a game now. I doubt it'll be good, and I already know people will hate it. Even so, I'm making it anyways because I know it'll help me get better. I am incredibly interested in spriting, and the opinions of others aren't going stop me from doing it. When I actually complete something every part of me doubts it and bashes it to bits, but despite my hatred of my own work, I still try.

Anybody up for some 8-bit goodies? I'm making matricians as 8-bit characters, they're not going to be some #####ty edit of MegaMan's sprite like everyone does, but looking like individual characters like the robot masters. Weird poses and all.

Didn't wanna do Mike's scarf, I had animating scarves.

Grand job. If you do plan to do mike's scarf, I would go with something starchy and pointy. It just feels better for that sprite. Just look at 8-bit Proto.

Post by: preventerWIND on 17 August 2008, 23:03:49

If you say so...

The beauty of 8-bit is how simple it is. That it gets the idea across fresh, crisp, and clean.

If you wanted to show the wind moving it'd only be one pixel's difference, no?

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread

Cool idea Wind, I approve.

And my scarf is longer than Protoman's anyway.

Not really, if you want to make it really seem like its fluttering in the wind then it could take a whole different shape. And like Mike said, his scarf is bigger so it'd be all over the place.

It'll be hard for him to just make you... 8-bit. There's only so much you can do with 8-bit. He can just make a generic female and that's the closest he'll get to you.

Most of us have unique character designs that are very specific, though oddly I'm not really among them. I mean, my character's design IS specific and unique, but... well, not anything special. Just a short guy in a green zip-up hoodie, but I've drawn it enough in my own distinct style that at least it's enough to go by.

My point is that Wind won't have much to work with in your case.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: preventerWIND on 18 August 2008, 03:35:53
I could probably pull somethin' off though. I was also thinking of a neat 8-bit preventers game, emphasis on "think" as I have no idea how to do that.

IT WOULD BE PRETTY TIGHT

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: ASR on 18 August 2008, 03:50:26
That would be pretty cool, haha.

You could select your character and such.

And if you select me, you just stand there and don't do anything ever for the entire game. No buttons work. There is only a blinking animation.

Title: Re: That ol' Sprite Thread
Post by: preventerWIND on 18 August 2008, 03:57:38
No, you could walk, but when you first get to the point where you have to jump, you can't jump high enough. So you're stuck there for the entire game.

preventerNOTHING could always be second player, having to grab power-ups and such for the main guy while the main guy protects him?

Of course making a two-player game for a strictly online community is difficult, at best. The main preventer could be computer controlled or something if you choose ASR, which is also difficult.

I also imagine you could just go all chaos theory on it and have ASR dodge loads of things and as long as he manages to stay alive, things just somehow magically work out.

It's not a helmet at all really, and it's very different from MM's helmet.

The white marks are COMPLETELY flush with the dark rest of it unlike the Lego blocks on MM's helmet, and the front bit isn't even the same basic shape, it's more of an irregular hexagon.

On a non-MM style costumed Mikero, these are just a different coloured area of the mask, but on a roboty MM style costume they are lights. Still completely flush and smooth though. Think of the gold and red of Iron Man's helmet in the movie, two seperate parts but they're completely flush.

You guessed the next Robot Master I was going to make! DiscoMan!

I'll be starting my next set soon, I intend to have two Robot Masters that have appeared elsewhere and redesign them or something, like I did with Barrage and Express.

Posted on: 25 February 2010, 02:52:00

Working on ExpressMan's ability, which is to speed up and become invulnerable to a bunch of #####; which MegaMan will be getting, in a manner of speaking.

Hold shoot and MegaMan runs fast and can take out some small enemies. Express Booster's a decent name I think. Hurdur Metroid ripoff.

Here's a sample, not the final animation.

Been literally years, since I did some spriting. My lady friend asked me to do her Draenei Deathknight. Not completely happy with it, but getting these legs done is just messy.

Now if one of you guys could do me the honors and make this a GIF with transparent background. I lost the program I normally had for this kinda stuff.
