Title: Minecraft!
Post by: Vinchenz Rock on 3 January 2011, 11:37:14
I figured since it seems to gathered enough popularity in the Avatar topic, might as well make it its own topic!

So yeah, for the sever I want to use a custom skin pack related to the MMM (and MegaMan in general). Anyone have the backgrounds from MChat? I'd like them to reference to.

Abe should have them. Other than that, I dunno. Might still have the few I did somewhen, but they are no tileset material.

I'll get them to ya soon :)

Just like he'll get to the actual site.

Yeah I said it!

Yeah I'd just like them to use the same colours and similar patterns and such.

So what do you guys think? Should I make a natural world? Futuristic world? Mixed?

Post by: White Shadow on 5 January 2011, 11:45:47
Would be awesome if you could do something that looks natural or at least consistent while untouched, with futuristic building stuff for planks, cobblestone and stuff.

If it's in the same vein as the Legends texture pack then I endorse this.

Turning that on and running the ruins music from the first game is an awesome experience.

This was what I was thinking I should do.

I'm also going to change the items and mobs to resemble things from MegaMan. I may also get into the code and alter it to my liking (such as having health the same way as it is in Megaman). Maybe. As it stands there's hundreds of .class files and they're all randomly named so it's pretty damn hard to find anything.

man those mchat backgrounds are sure cool to not look at

Joking aside, my Winter break has finally ended and sooner or later I'll have the server up. As far as mods go, until an official Moding API gets put in and Bukkit (Server Mods) is released, we're going to play Vanilla Minecraft. Textures will also be vanilla until I get started on the texture pack.

For starters, I'm thinking of changing the some of the things like this:

Swords -> Z-Sabers
Bow & Arrows -> Mega Buster + Energy Shots
Armours -> Variations of the Metool Equipment (such as the hat with the + symbol)
Diamond Armour -> MegaMan's Armour
Pickaxes -> Laser Trident
Pumpkins -> Sniper Joe Helm
Lanterns -> Sniper Joe Helm w/ Eye
Torches -> Fluorescent Tubes
Pork -> Small Health Pellet
Cooked Pork -> Big Health Pellet
Bread -> Energy Pellet
Apple -> Big Energy Pellet
Golden Apple -> E-Tank
Skeletons -> Sniper Joes
Slimes -> Metools (if they ever come back, that is...)
Wooden Planks -> Whatever metool helmets are made out of
Cobblestone -> Some kind of blue-tinted metal
Mossy Cobblestone -> Rusted above-mentioned metal

I know it was mentioned to use Nether items as checkered blocks but with being able to paint wool blocks soon, I think those can cover that and we can use Nether items for other things.

What-chu guys think?

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: White Shadow on 14 January 2011, 11:30:17
Sounds pretty good. Though E-Tanks are almost too awesome to be something as rare as Golden Apples.

Also, I don't quite get what you have in mind for the Planks.

Posted on: 11 January 2011, 19:17:23

Looks like the new patch is out. Dyes away!

Also, just thought about pumpkins again and unless we find a decent source for glow stone, maybe they'd be better used as some kind of lamp block like a neon light.

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: Vinchenz Rock on 14 January 2011, 21:03:10
For planks, I meant the yellow material that Metool helmets have... they'll just be some kind of yellow plastic looking thing.

I'll probably hack in chests full of nether stuff for aesthetics and anyone can just go and grab some.

Also, Cake can become E-Tank blocks and golden apples can become E-Tank items! :D

I shall see about opening the server tomorrow. I'm going to be quite busy today.

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: White Shadow on 14 January 2011, 21:20:28
Hacking in is actually not a bad idea and I was going to suggest it for any kind of unusual block. Maybe a number of big chests in an underground vault with helpful signs or something...

EDIT: Also... Ooooooh, yeah!

EDIT2: Dyeable Wool aside, you might want to take a look at Sandstone and Snow Blocks, both of which don't appear in nature.

I still have no idea what Minecraft is.

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: White Shadow on 14 January 2011, 23:31:25
It's a game about punching trees. From the punched trees you get logs. From these logs you make planks, which in turn can be made into sticks. Sometimes you also punch sheep.

No seriously, it's basically a huge sandbox with a complex crafting system, which allows you to build really cool stuff if you're good/patient enough. And if that's too boring, you turn up the difficulty and hide from zombies and other monsters in a self-built shelter during the night and during the day you do stuff to improve that shelter.

Title: Re: Minecraft!

Minecraft is a game that's hard to describe... it's much better to play it to understand it.

I'd point you to the free version on the website... but it's Creative Mode only, which is much different from Survival Mode.

Also, ideas for Redstone:
Redstone Ore -> Junk Ore
Redstone -> Circuit Wires

Ooh! Eddie for Chests (although wide chests will look weird).

I can change Sandstone or something to tiny checkered blocks, I think that would look better (and would be easier) than to build a tower out of huge checkered blocks.

EDIT: OK, so I tried making a server for Minecraft but now I can't seem to get the computer the server was on to connect to the Router, even though I'm using the same Router on this laptop. :/

Minecraft drags me out of my self-imposed semi-exile.

Unfortunately I can't really help set a server up since I pretty much started it today and I have no idea how any of it really works (ended up in a lightless hole on the first night, wandered out at dawn to collect wood, and then when I went back home there was a creeper in my cave, probably trying to steal my bacon) but I'd be more than happy to play in it when it's up.

Wide chests swap their sprites completely, don't they? So why not make a normal chest look like Eddie and a wide one like Auto's head or something?

Speaking of texture packs, I'm using this (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?p=2112469#p2112469) at the moment -- good stuff, although it does make iron ore look like it's filled with blood and guts.

edit: dur I can make links dur.

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: Chron on 3 February 2011, 13:44:42
Meh, that image doesn't want to load.

I know how to set a server up... it's not all that complex if your router's firewall settings are just right.  Virtually just run the server program or one of the better modded ones with more features, and then give people your IP.

But the whole crux of the thing is making sure your router's settings are right; if you can't access that or change them then you're not getting very far... at least not without hamachi.

I already don't have much time for myself this semester so a Minecraft server won't be coming up from me, not until Summer at the least. Sorry. :(

I was excited but now I gotta just do work for the next three months...

They're both impressive. The latter would more so if it was a finished model. I'm sure the inside would look a lot less cramped.

Those are in the Alpha though, so unlimited blocks. Also, one can mod the alpha to build without needing to run everywhere.

It can't be too big by much. The Enterprise IS really freakin' large. It should take like 6 or 7 minutes to walk its entire length in real life, and in Minecraft, the guy does it in under 3 minutes if I recall correctly.

This is my reference:

Is it smaller or bigger?

Memory Alpha and the Technical Manuals give the Sovereign-Class (Ent-E) at 700m and the Galaxy-Class (Ent-D) at 642m.

One thing we could do is scount one of the existing public servers and grab some chunks. Of course that's just not as good.

I'm messing around on this server right now -- to be honest it's not great and the mods are kind of flaky, but it's a stable server. You'll also have to post to get on the whitelist. If anyone knows any better places, I'm game for it.

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: White Shadow on 22 April 2011, 11:02:10
Not without dying, no. Usually I leave a trail of torches to prevent this from happening. Even a prominent landmark like a mountain with a lava flow will be out of visible range after half a day of walking.

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: Speed Racer on 23 April 2011, 01:01:25
It's cool, I found it. I downloaded a cartographer program, placed a #####-ton of torches and figured out where I was. It was a good thing I stopped and did that, because I was way, way off course. If I'd kept wandering, maybe I would've ended up at the Far Lands.

Title: Re: Minecraft!
Post by: White Shadow on 29 April 2011, 11:41:57
I've always felt, my houses were nice, but kinda small, plain and boring in spite of all the architectural quirks I tried to throw in.

Now when I started my latest world, I did not have anything special in mind except trying how much an open quarry yields. The answer: A lot.

With my chests full of stuff, I wanted to do something big. Something awesome.

So, I started PROJECT DOME-ICILE.

One half of the raw construction is now nearly finished, the rest is still in the works. I'll keep you posted.

This is actually done by hand, without any editors or cheats, except me playing on peaceful right now.

Construction is on halt until the next patch or so. Was kinda busy the last two weeks and I'm getting to the point where I really have to start thinking about interior design and possibly redstone machinery.

EDIT: Finally finished the back side of the structure and pulled up some ceilings and walls on the inside. Workshop, Forge and Storage Rooms are done. Now there's time for some sufficiently cool living quarters. Screenshots or maybe a Fraps-Walkthrough are pending.

Posted on: 16 May 2011, 14:36:11

So, the full release will be next week. I'm hyped. Checked out the pre-release version, got a friend into playing and will now probly rent a small server next month.
