Title: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Mournson on 28 December 2007, 05:10:35
I undertsand there's alot of different mods out there, mostly of the Zex box, and Preystation variaty, but I'm not talking about firmware mods(cause I dpn'y like em) but hardware mods, maybe even just a dumb custom paint job. for instance I'm working on an xbox controller witha custom paint job, and a little lighted design, a couple of turbo triggers and a crouch switch for retarded gme like halo that don't have permanant crouch. I'll put up a couple of prgress shots but so far I'm just saning 90% of the surface smooth.

Anyone elsae into modding of this sort, even on computers?

P.S. I put this in creation station cause there's not only a visual element to this but a creative one, tell me if I'm wrong.

He's talking about custom modding hardware. Like making controllers with extra buttons, custom paintjobs, and such. Apparently he's working on a pad for XBox that'll have a switch for crouching so it's not permanent in Halo or something. I don't know Halo or care so I'm guessing that in Halo if you crouch you stay down until you press the button again.

Unless you meant me, in which case I was referring to another thread.

OK what was that all about? I'm not getting your posts either of you, either I'm not privy to whatever you guys are saying, or I don't try to save time by cutting my words down to nothing. but I'll take both your comment s as criticism and ask why.

and you CAN'T crouch permanantly in halo, which is annoying, but I wouldn't explain why, cause you don't care.

for starters, I'm not vain, and I need not my anttention or yours, second, grow up, I was actually serious on the topic, and just cause you have about as much sense for electronics as your average Ipod user, doesn't mean I need you lack of intellectual responce. and to think, this could have been avoided if you just hadn't told me not to flatter myself. now, let's drop this, cause, nobody cares, as usual.

Aww lighten up y'all. CM's a jerk like that. You get to endure it.

But really, I'm not into modding and skinning, but sure as hell would like to be. The closest thing I've done to skinning was paint the Akuma symbol on my GBA SP, looked terrible BTW. But I want some skins for my DS, and possibly a nice skin for my Mac Mini.

I'm ot for skinningeither, and I've nevr done a paintjob before, but I'm getting into it, cause I have too much free time. either way I just figured a couple of you guys might have done something interest, or, anything at all, oh well.

I've only made a skin from a site called Decalgirl, which is fun how you can design a skin in photoshop for your consoles and such. Most 'modding' i've ever done was designing a skin for my DS. (since it makes up for not having a lite...sorta>_>;)

CM, I said drop it, seriously it's childish, and, technicly, spamming. besides, I'm actually not cool at all, I'm a loser, but I still do what I do and think what I think.

MOX, I was looking for that site, I could never remember the name of it though. BUT that was before I started with this crap.

You need to work on your posts, you're dropping letters pretty frequently.  Don't make me harp on it.  As for modding, I was never a big fan simply because painting a console or controler usually makes it look like it was painted (ie like a 9 year olds art project).  Same reason I never put stickers on my controler or consoles, they just look bad.

I'm not really a modder, I might put on stickers or leave a mark on something so I know it's MINE, but the most I've done is skin my Gamecube and put an Under Armour sticker over the Nintendo thing it the middle.

If you like Guitar Hero, check out the mod area at the Scorehero.com forums, they give 'em clear cases or put all the guts in a real guitar or something, it's sweet.

Ah. I thought it might be that but I'm used to the usual version of "fgsfds" which is just a way of saying you don't understand the post.

Yeah it is low but I thought his assertiveness of being who he is was quasi admirable.

Anyway I've ever really done modding inside stuff. Software skinning, that's about it. You know, photoshop.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Johncarllos on 29 December 2007, 02:17:42
Don't forget your icons. (Not sure if that falls under photoshop or not)

So, today I took the faceplate off my GH3 Wii-tar, and went sharpie nuts on it. not that I drew on it, but I laid a pattern which consisted of me making the plate mostly black with a few white lines here and there, around some of the holes, and a bunch of action under the whammy bar area. I'll post pictures when I get a new computer. It's really neat.

I agree with sano on this one, Next time, close your mouth and quit defecating all over this thread. Whereas everyone else is trying to have a serious discussion, You are just consistantly flaming  Mournson. If you don't like being quoted, quit posting crap.  I'm even surprized this STUIP little topic has not been locked for your complete HAT for mournson.

As for modding... When I buy a new console, portable, or what-have-you, It's not the innical buy that I am overly obsessed with, but what I can do to it afterward!

To the point of buying over-priced crap to attach to it to make it beter.

As for custom building... I get by when I need to fix something up...

Post by: Mournson on 30 December 2007, 08:20:27
okay, that made me laugh. But seriously, I just said I was a loser to get him to shut up, but, seems JC is right, oh well.

Any who, I never used to like modding, seemed pretty risky, still is, which is why I don't modify firmware and crap, I'd rather love it for what it is. But, I do, do re-textures for fable, it's not much, but I don't have a 3D editting program, so it stays at that. And I have a lot of background with painting plastic, I do the whole bit, sanding, two coats of primer, two coats of paint, like a gazillion coats of clear coat, then a lot of polishing with automotive polish. makes a real nice gloss finish, but it is getting to the painting that's going to be a wench on the controller, because I have to build a part from scratch, then add internal lighting, and a design cut into the plastic and filled with an epoxy of sorts, this will trap the light, and give the design a nice glow.

It's supposed to be about simple visual hardware mods. Painting/body work on controllers and systems.
If we've doen any, we should post it.
If fact, I'll post a picture of my GH guitar faceplate sharpie job. I was bored.

Wow, that's decent modding right there.
I wouldn't mind having a light up GH3 controller.

yeah well, I just ran into a Major problem with the lighted design, I'm not sure if it'll work because of the supports on the inside for the buttons and circuit board. but I'll still give it a try

Those are made by Nintendo, they're sold in a bundle with Phantom Hour Glass, it isn't a mod.

allow me a brain fart? I honestly didn't think of that, but I also haven't layed a design, so I could always work with the space given, maybe even take a couple of chunks out of the frame work, who knows.

Here's the skin that I designed and got printed by Decal girl for my DS months ago, I posted it on the last board too. The skin right now is still holding up pretty good.

So MOX, how exactly did you make that?

Apparently from something called Decal Girl.

You probably send your DS in and they do the rest.

I loathe things like that, with the huge gaps around the speakers and the buttons...

Mank.

On Decal Girl there's a .psd file for the template which you can edit. Yeah I don't like the square cut-out around the speakers either, It might look better if there were just hole cut-outs for the speakers instead but that would be really hard to put on. I'm still happy that the skin makes my scratched DS look newer at least.

Agreed.

Also the design you used is cool, MOX, but it's not the style I'd rock on my DS. No offense, because it IS a cool design. Just not for a DS in my opinion. It's more of a design for a website or something.

Actually if it was just hole cutouts that were totally flush against the sides of the buttons and those rubbery bumber things at the top, then you'd probably be able to get it on perfect because it could only fit the one way. But that's a shot in the dark.

Yeah, I didn't really want to do a a detailed skin that would stick out too much from the silver (but couldn't help it) so I just picked the color yellow (dark skin colors on a silver DS stick out too much for me). Later I'm planning to just design a white skin for my DS with some simple designs on it that would blend in better with the silver. Personally now I think some white skin with some simple shapes or something would look good on my DS.

This is my GH guitar. Just a few stickers, 'cause I like the white on black.

The bottom picture is a sticker I have on my portfolio that I got at a show by a local punk band my friend kind of manages. But one of the members is going to uni in BC so their last show is on saturday, if I can get a smaller version of that stick or something I'd add it to my guitar (or "wiitar" if you're one of those people) and then that's probably it.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Johncarllos on 4 January 2008, 00:30:04
My GH2 guitar has no stock stickers, they are all from bands or something else.

I decided against the fret stickers because even though they look cool, they slow down the fast fretting and peel. Not bad at all, the 3 stars around the base of the neck are tasteful, as well as the unexpected star on the Wii Remote.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Mikero on 4 January 2008, 01:21:02
I was OCD careful putting on the fret stickers so I don't think they'll peel. Also, I make sure I can still kind of feel that line on the yellow one, but I couldn't really feel it while playing before I put those on. The Wii remote stickers (there's a bigger star one on the back between the B button and sensor) are also there so when I go to a friends I can identify my remotes, my other remote has the stars pointing the opposite direction (essentially). One of the small stars on the guitar started peeling almost right away though, I think I might've bent it while putting it on or something but I'm reluctant to replace it.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Johncarllos on 4 January 2008, 01:50:07
I hated the bump on the yellow fret when getting good, it killed my fingers. Once I got to expert, I had my pinky on the orange and index on the red, so my middle finger got killed by it.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Mikero on 4 January 2008, 01:56:49
The main reason I suck at medium is that it feels weird to use my pinky and I'm not used to shifting over from blue to red and such.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Johncarllos on 4 January 2008, 02:11:10
You'll get used to it, just eek by on all the songs you can and you'll be used to it in a week. Don't bother 5 starring anything, just beat them. Then go 5 star the easy songs, then start on hard and 5 star medium songs, then whatever you want after that. It was MY starting formula, and I beat hard in 2 weeks, and expert in a month and a half.

Of course, I played between 1/2 hour and 5 hours a day. Normally no more than 3 though. And you're busy, so I find it entirely acceptable.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)

Some songs don't seem to give me money anymore, in easy. Does it have a limit?

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Johncarllos on 4 January 2008, 02:43:55
When you 5 Star a song, you've gotten all you can get from it.
You get a grand total of X, lets say 1000 dollars for 5 starring a song. You start by 3 starring it for 400 $, then you get 4 stars on it and get another 250, then you 5 star it and it finishes off with 350 for a total of 1000, which you'd have gotten if you 5 starred it the first time.

Bonus songs do not give you money.
Songs on easy give you what, 600 total? I think so.
Songs on Expert give you like 15,000-20,000, I can't remember.

I think it also relates difficulty wise, too, if you can 5 star an easy song for 600, you can barely pass a song on hard for 600, or 4 star a song on medium for 600.

It's all about the stars.

Also, when you beat a song on a high level in GH3, it doesn't give you the cash for the lower levels like it did in GH2. This annoyed me because I had to beat all the easy and medium levels to get my cash.

So Mike, yes, there IS a limit.

Post by: Abominator on 4 January 2008, 05:03:07
I've done all of Easy to at least 4 stars now...

The step up to Medium is tricky to say the least.

That's what I don't like about hard drives in console gaming.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: ASR on 4 January 2008, 05:14:31
Apparently they sell memory cards for it, but that's something I wish I'd known beforehand. They really don't do a good job of advertising alternate forms of memory storage.

It's not a big deal, since the GH3 save was the only real valuable one on there.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: Mikero on 4 January 2008, 05:17:04
All I know is that with the Wii it's kind of annoying using external memory. I don't even know if a game can access a save file directly from the SD (or whatever) card or if you have to copy the data to the hard drive to play. Not that it comes up a lot.

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: ASR on 4 January 2008, 05:20:50
No Wii software can access the SD Card directly... it's just for temporary storage.
You need to transfer a stored save file OFF of the SD and back onto the Wii HD if you want to play from it.

It bugs me, really. Quite a bit.
I'm also scared about the VC Games, because apparently they're registered DIRECTLY to your individual Wii, so if the console is damaged, you need to go through a bunch of crap on the phone with Nintendo to get the rights back to everything you bought.

ASR, can't you just jam in a USB flash drive to save games onto?
I heard of somebody who plugged in their USB MP3 player and played songs from it while he played a game, so I think you could save to it....

Title: Re: modding(LEGALLY)
Post by: ASR on 4 January 2008, 17:02:09
Nope, believe me I have tried and tried again. I still have the old save data on the other hard drive, but my younger brother has since claimed it, filled it with over 48 hours worth of COD4 data, and would whine if I took it back. I'd rather replay through the game than go out and buy a memory card.
So, yeah, basically, we now own two 360's due to a long 4 months of problems concerning the Red Ring of Death in which we gave up and bought a new one, intending to sell the old one when it returned, and other crazy antics that led to my very own 360.

If you make a clear faceplate, you can take out some pegs and put the lights right in the old peg holes.

I ment tribal, I was in a rush. an di'm not sure what kind, most likely ps2 or xbox since I have no way to test the others, sept maybe 360.

and JC, I'm thinking of just directly modding the original hardware, it'd be much easier than a face plate.

Speaking of modding, I kind of screwed myself, I bought my friends old PSone, and had my hopes up for chiping it, unfortunately I hear nobody does that anymore, so chances are I'm going to have to chip it myself. And I'd probably(most definitely) screw up.

With save manager and Ps1 unlocking abilities! I'll  buy it for the sake of wasting money, if it works it's yours. Anyways the most modding I ever did was to my Psp, I tried cleaning the faceplate inside and ended up with a scratch on the glass area of the faceplate, yay
