Looking forward to this. I don't care much for the games but I want to give 'em another shot.
2  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 11 October 2018, 16:22:32
The insta-killing spikes in MM1 always reminded me of how in Sonic 1 the spikes would insta-kill you regardless of your I-frames, and how both series "fixed" that with the sequels. Luckily, in both games, there's really not too many places where that bit of design purposely screws you over (aside from Cut Man's stage and one of the Wily stages).

I think MM1 is an important game especially for building the foundations of the series but I honestly don't get much joy out of its sticky controls and level design. Both of which were vastly improved in the sequel (and refined even further with 3 & 4).

Though I always did kinda prefer how both MM1 and MMX1 had you fight the boss refights through the final stages rather than dumping them all together at the end.
3  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 5 October 2018, 22:59:44
IMO:
7 > 9 > 2 = 3 > 10 > 11 = 4 = 5 = 8 > 6 > MM&B > 1

Something like that. MMIV (GB) and V would probably be between 9 to 10 while III > I > II would be around MM&B for me.

Mega Man 7 is my absolute favourite, and it astounds me that it was made in such a short amount of time. But 11 ain't half bad!
4  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 5 October 2018, 19:42:27
Beat the game last night. I only played it on Casual so it was pretty easy; honestly kind of wished I could play on Normal difficulty damage-wise with infinite lives; the biggest reason I only played on Casual was because I didn't want to replay levels.

Anyway, found it really fun! I think it's exactly an average Mega Man game (on-par with 4, 5, and 10) and level-design wise, it was really varied. They were really long stages compared to the older games but just long enough to not overstay its welcome. The mini-bosses were fun and the gimmicks were very much done in the style that this series has perfected.

Acid Man & Bounce Man stages were probably the weakest stages, with Tundra Man being my favourite.

Wily stage spoilers:
Wily stages were a bit of a disappointment but considering how long the stages got it's probably for the best. Yellow Devil was hard but learning his pattern really made it satisfying when I beat him.
A lot of the weapons this time around are some of my favourites in the series! They all had a lot of utility to them, and thanks to the weapon switching being easier than ever I found that I used them way more than I did with the past games. Block Man's and Impact Man's being so useful that I was almost always using them, heh.

I kept forgetting to use the Speed gear a lot of times so I mostly just brute-forced my way through a lot of some sections. The amount of damage you get in Casual mode made it really easy to do so anyway (shrug). Power gear similarly I just basically used on bosses when I remembered. They were nice utility but nothing rememberable.

Oh, and the music was easily the weakest part of this game. I think the compositions are fine but the style & instruments make it really samey and forgettable.

Anyway that's my scattered thoughts on this game, time to go back into hiding.
5  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 3 October 2018, 17:10:24
I've only beat 3 stages thus far but so far so good. Playing on Casual because I don't have time to replay stages but it is certainly a lot easier than NES games this way.

I skipped the demo so wasn't sure what to expect controls-wise but it's very solid. Feels very close weight-wise to the NES games. The knock-back feels a bit more harsh however.

Rush Coil being on at all times is very good, though I miss being able to use the buster and weapon at the same time like in 8.

Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to beat it tonight or get close.
6  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 on: 18 August 2018, 18:23:39
o hai. I'm still alive.

I haven't beaten a couple of these games before but I ended up going through all of them and getting all 52 medals across both collections. Had a ton of fun, though obviously the second half was more frustrating than fun at times.

Never played X8 before so I was disappointed after beating a couple mavericks; the gameplay was fixed from X7 and was almost as tight as the 2D games before it but good lord the level design was just ass. Levels in Mega Man are at their worst when they're just full of pits or spikes. And some of the more gimmicky stages were just not fun (though after I figured out how Dynasty was supposed to work I cleared it very quickly.)

It's disappointing because I've had people tell me that it's just as good as the older X games. Guess I should have gone into it with no expectations. The final boss itself was neat, I guess.

Heck, I actually had less frustrations playing through X7. In fact, I kind of enjoyed it. The cyber level was the worst and the level design in general I'd describe as a "wet fart" but rescuing all of the reploids I found was easier than in X6 and the level design rarely had insta-kill sections (outside of air space part 1). Some end bosses were frustrating but like, I found it to be about as good as X6 at the least?

I barely play X7 before but according to some friends of mine, the loading time was horrendous on the original PS2 version, and they're lightning fast here. If I had to suffer through long loading times it definitely wouldn't have been a good time so maybe that was enough for me to be able to enjoy X7.

So yeah, it's kind of funny but, on a pure "fun" level, I think I might have enjoyed X7 more than X8? Just weird considering how I always had them in my mind prior to actually playing through them.

I'm definitely not against seeing a new X9 though. After all that I'm still hankering for more; X's original gameplay loop is too good to be lost (though of course, there's been indie games that strive to replicate the experience and have come real close).

Oh and X Challenge is fun! I liked it. While a bunch of challenges being the same across two games is a bummer it's still a neat new thing which at this point I'm willing to take.

Also if you move back there will be three Michaels from Megaman Matrix living in Ottawa.
And there Michaels there is!

I feel a little better now that I'm in Ottawa. Still a little unmotivated, even for looking for a job. It's like, I've moved here and now I'm a little unsure about what I'm supposed to do next.

I'll figure it out, I guess. This apathy is going to kill me one day...

I'm pretty sure Dr. Light's hologram is sentient and it can place capsules wherever it wants to. Then again, the X series's story just goes at whatever direction it feels like.

I've been splurging on Megaman a lot lately. The past 2 weeks I completed Megaman 8, X4, X5, Xtreme, and also Legends.

@Mike - Thanks for the words. I was about to take a nap when I first read that message but decided against it after reading that.

I know I should be motivated to do what I need to do but when I even try to do it a voice in the back of my head tells me, "What's the point?". And very loudly too.

I just gotta keep trying. I know things will be better when I finally move.

35  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: The Game Grumps are playing X7 on: 7 May 2013, 12:45:03
The VERY best players go to Kuwanger after Penguin. You can do a pixel-perfect walljump to get up to the heart platform without the arm part.

I remember doing this at least twice when I was younger. Could never pull it off again these days.

I don't mind the way the Grumps play the games but I definitely enjoy it more when they take it seriously. Their MegaMan X playthrough is already one of the better ones they've done.

38  MegaMan Series / Legends Series / Re: How do you honestly feel about the Mega Man Legends series? on: 28 February 2013, 06:08:31
3DS is starting to pick up steam.

Both Legends games are some of my favourite games in the series, and of all time. I love them. I wish 2 would run well on my PSP so I could actually complete it.

I remember that, among MegaMan fans who loved to write fan fiction about Protoman x Zero (which were a lot of), Legends was considered a bad game so I held my opinion about Legends. Then I came here, where people didn't write (as many) fan fictions.

40  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: What is your favorite X game? on: 10 January 2013, 03:44:31
X4 is my favourite, although X1 is the better game.

I beat this super tough boss in Command Mission and I never played it again. I've always wanted to go back to it but I've never had the chance.

I bought X7 for $5. Played it for about 2 hours. The next day I returned it for $2. Was worth not owning it at that price.

48  MegaMan Series / Miscellaneous MegaMan Games / Re: Megaman x Street Fighter FREE on PC on: 19 December 2012, 23:05:37
It's not bad. I found it pretty easy.

Well, until Vega Stage II. Worst tower climb in any MegaMan game I've ever played and Balrog is a bitch. I can't dodge his jump attacks (and trust me, I tried), his weakness is useless to use against since it's close-ranged (and Balrog is constantly jumping everywhere), and he hits you for 1/6th of your total health.

A lot of love went into this game, I can see that. But the fact that there's no save system makes me not want to replay it just to stop at Balrog again.

In other news, the MegaMan 25th Anniversary game that is being made by industry devs got a demo if any of you want to try it out.

Well, I actually already have been toying about with making it NES style but 16:9 ratio for widescreen.

I'm going to try and recreate a few real levels to see how it plays, can't figure out how to make ladders though :(

What are you making it in? I've been working on a ton of stuff in XNA that can basically make any 2D game (sprites with animation, collision systems, text systems that don't rely on SpriteBatch, etc...)
