Title: Best metroid game
Post by: yuri on 1 January 2008, 22:31:08
Does everyone really think it's that weird that I like Metroid Prime: Hunters as my favorite?

Yes.  *Baps you*

You are to like either Metroid or Super Metroid!

Personally I love the Prime games but saying that would ensure Rez's wrath upon my person.

Super wierd. Have you played any NES or SNES Metroid?

Fusion wasn't too bad. Didn't finish it though.

Prime sucks. I managed to get halfway into Prime 2, but I don't know how. It must have been in the summer and I must have finished all the games I wanted to play. It wouldn't even be as bad if they didn't try to make it a Metroid game.

Super Metroid, beyond a doubt. Fusion and Zero Mission were good too, so were Metroid and Metroid II.

Fusion was the only one I could get anywhere in... I should finish it, I really liked it.

Super Metroid

/thread

Super Metroid is the penicle of the series.  Zero Mission is a close second and excelent remake of the first Metroid with my ONLY grip in it being the fact they STILL (like they did in Fusion) show you where to go.  That has no place in the game.  Fusion wasn't awful, but it was far too mission based and you were told exactly where to go 95% of the time.  Not very Metroidy in method if not gameplay.  I can't play the NES Metroid.  I tried but it's missing too many basic features that Super introduced.  Metroid 2 is pretty sweet, but suffers from many of same things NES Metroid does.  Metroid Prime is a shooter skinned with Metroid themed things.  It had no place in any serious discussion about Metroid apart from how it's all but killed any chance of the series getting a new game that's not a FPS.

Maybe I should try Super Metroid, as NES Metroid turned me off.

Fusion was easy compared to Super, one or two exceptions, like when running into the SA-X.. freakin' creepy.

I said near unbeatable. Near.

Either way I'm talking about early stages of the game, where you're best to avoid it completely.

You guys need to stop lying to yourselves.
Prime 1-3 (especially the first) were damn good games. Despite the fact that it turned the side-scrolling 2D Samus we know and love into a more round, shiny sexy piece of ass in today's games, they had pretty darn good gameplay. The storylines could have used a little revisiting (especially the intro to Corruption. Ugh... Can you say Halo 2?)

Since it's coming down to my opinion, I'd still have to say Metroid IV: Fusion was a unique game. Still had the feel of Super Metroid, but more suspenseful. I still haven't beat it 100%. Some of the items are bitches to find.

Second place comes Super Metroid.

Then Prime 1-2.

Then NES Metroid.

Then everything else.

Booyah.

Title: Re: Best metroid game
Post by: Mikero on 3 January 2008, 02:39:08
Prime games are OK as games. I got bored of Echoes before half way through even though I played farther. That's the kind of game that feels like it needs more than 2 characters. But that's not how Metroid games go, and as Metroid games Prime fails hard.

It's like a generic 1-player FPS with a downloaded Metroid mod applied to it. It looks the part but it just isn't.

Title: Re: Best metroid game
Post by: Cherry on 3 January 2008, 03:52:41
Super Metroid.  I loved the level of exploration and needing to choose between getting all the items or trying to beat your fastest clear time.

And, I almost never figured out how to get into the rest of the underwater area.  Then, when I was bored one day, I just started setting bombs everywhere, and I accidentally switched to Super Bomb somehow... and you guys should know the rest.

Anyway, for some odd reason, that made me LOVE the game.  Or, made me realize I did.  Whichever one turns out to be true.

While I'm of the Super Metroid/Zero Mission camp, I (as always) have to stick up for the Prime series.

Everyone says that they don't play like a Metroid game, and I argue that it all depends on what you quantify as a "Metroid" game. Those out there who dislike Prime tend to put emphasis on the lack of platforming, claiming that it was the series main staple. If that's what makes a game Metroid for you, that's fair enough.

I, however, have always viewed Metroid games as being more about isolation, adventure, exploring, uncovering new parts of old areas with newly acquired power ups, and atmosphere. As far as I'm concerned, Prime has each and every one of those.

Title: Re: Best metroid game

HA!  I'm glad I was drinking water instead of soda.  Pretty funny misread.

EDIT: Damnit, Edge... well, guess I'll contribute a little more.

Yeah, I don't see why people hate Prime so much, just a different style of gameplay.  I don't like Prime as much as I like Super, but that's just my personal preference.  At least it's not as bad a failure to its franchise as MMZ is to Megaman.

For me it's not necessarily the platforming or anything. I can't really explain, but it's just missing a feeling. Something's not Metroidy to me, which is why I say it feels like another game with a downloaded Metroid mod. Where Mario 64 feels like a 3D Mario game, Prime doesn't feel like a 3D Metroid game.

Title: Re: Best metroid game
Post by: ASR on 3 January 2008, 04:19:12
Super Metroid was a major part of my childhood, and allowed me to be the one who told everyone Samus was a girl when SSB64 came out. Most of my friends didn't know about Metroid at that time.

I also really enjoyed Zero Mission. I remember playing through Fusion but I Just don't remember it enough to treasure it.

I also loved the first Prime game, and Corruption was such an amazing Wii experience that I don't care whether or not it's a good METROID game, it's just a good game in general. Never played Echoes.

I played the first Prime.

Beat level one.

... shortly afterwards, I put the game down. I detest Prime, so I wouldn't call it a good game even if it's popular. Hell, I'm not afraid to find a group of Halo fanboys and yell "HALO 3 SUCKS!"

... 'cause it does.

Pfft. I have to agree on Edge on everything he says.

And when I say this, I KNOW I'm not the only one who agrees, but Prime 1 was pretty much a 3D Super Metroid with some key differences.

Title: Re: Best metroid game
Post by: TheRedPriest on 3 January 2008, 04:55:59
Prime 1 was pretty much a 3D Super Metroid

Uh... no?  Like Mikero said, it's a FPS with a Metroid skin.  It plays and feels nothing like Metroid.  Take the original Doom and slap a Metroid patch on it and you have Metroid Prime.  I've said it once and I'll say it again but any 3D Metroid would be modeled something like Mega Man Legends/Tomb Raider.  Nintendo proved they can do 3D platforming in Mario 64.  Imagine Samus exploring ruins and tunnels with the same solid 3D care.  You won't of course, because the FPS drones have bought enough of Prime to legitimize it as "A True 3D Metroid", thus signaling the death knoll for the series.

with some key differences.

Like not being Metroid in any way shape or form other than being called "Metroid"?  Other than that it's EXACTLY like Super.

Title: Re: Best metroid game
Post by: Vinchenz Rock on 3 January 2008, 05:01:08
I've already argued on this with you in the past. I'm not going to bother again. However, most Metroid fans I've spoken to who have started with Metroid on the NES or with Super Metroid are the ones that agree with me.

Title: Re: Best metroid game
Post by: TheRedPriest on 3 January 2008, 05:10:43
My experience shows that people don't like it or if they do they conceede it's pretty much a FPS and not a Metroid game.  Very few in the camp of "It's Metroid in 3D".

Title: Re: Best metroid game
Post by: Edgecrusher on 3 January 2008, 05:17:52
I'd like to think I'm as far from an FPS drone as they come (Prime being the only one I really play), but really, you can't honestly say Metroid Prime is NOTHING like a Metroid game outside of ascetics.

Every Metroid game I've played has involved landing on an alien planet that's crawling with all sorts of indigenous creatures that inhabited their respective 'zones', exploring derelict ruins in what limited areas I had access to, collecting power-ups, returning to previously explored areas with said power-ups to find that they open new areas of the labyrinthine temples and alien landscapes, a few boss battles, and then quickly hauling my ass out of there before the planet/base explodes.

Even the platforming is still there, it's just not as obvious due to the point of view.

I guess I don't see what's missing.

I can't imagine anyone going directly from Super Metroid to Metroid Prime and saying it feels like the same universe. It might look Metroidy (I don't really think it does either) but that's not all of it.

That's only because that's how you feel about Metroid Prime.

I have played and beat Super Metroid before I played Prime (in fact, I didn't want to try Prime because I thought it was just another FPS). When I did give it a try it turned out to be a pretty good Metroid game. And that's how I feel about Metriod Prime.

I'd played Metroid games before I played any Prime games, if that's what you're insinuating, Rocky. It's not like I went from Prime to other Metroid games. I'm sure if someone went backwards like that they'd think it's all fine and the same.

That's only because that's how you feel about Metroid Prime.

Well what else would I say? That's what an opinion is. I really can't fathom why you get the same feeling from both games and you can't fathom why I don't. That's the point of discussion.

I was more referring to it being called water. Water being "blue" is a common misconception and that blue liquid in the toilet isn't water.

Title: Re: Best metroid game

It's mostly water and some cleaner. The puck in the reservoir dissolves slowly into the water over time, which is why the water appears blue after many flushes.

This is one of the biggest/first DUH moments of 2008.

I too have a SNES with both aLttP and SM.

And I have many gems for it too... though, I actually downloaded some for my VC. >_>;;

Neither is "It just is".

Well, technically, it is. Even if it doesn't feel like it to you or even to the majority of its gamers say it isn't Metroid, you can't do anything about it because Nintendo says its Metroid. Just like how no matter how much we hate it, BN4 is STILL a MMBN game.

But, even though I've said this in pretty much all of my posts in this topic, the Metroid Prime series are good Metroid games... And I KNOW I'm not the only one who agrees.

A lot of people agree that marrying cousins is fine. That Alanis Morissette understands the definition of irony. That cucumbers taste worse pickled.

They're all wrong too. ;-)

But the issue isn't wether or not the game is called Metroid. It's wether it plays like Metroid. Just because Nintendo says "This is a Metroid game", that doesn't mean the discussion is just done.

Exactly. I knew it but I said it anyway. I was pissed off at the moment.

Thats why I said technically. And again with the, "it just isn't," eh?

You only gave Prime 2 a try, right? Prime 1 is a LOT better and more fun. Prime 2 is considered the worst of the series. If you try out the first one it might feel a little more like a Metroid game.

I didn't say "it just isn't" in that post, I said the argument "It is Metroid because Nintendo says so" is a totally moot point since we're not really talking about that. I'm just not bothering to repeat myself as to why I think it isn't. I also tried Prime Hunters, but not much. And I've checked out that whole demo thing of Prime 3, which I thought looked fun but the video of the battle with the Space Pirates where there's a ship overhead or something and you're on some round platform looked very non Metroidy but I'd have to play it to know.

While Prime 3 DOES feel a lot less like a Metroid game like Prime 1 and 2, it's still a fun game. Prime 1 is still better though.

Prime Hunters... not a Metroid game. Nintendo made that game SPECIFICALLY to be an online FPS. I find it fun on its own though.

And yeah, I misread your post there, sorry.

I've listed all sorts of reasons as to why it's a good Metroid title, so at least the "it just is" group can come up with a solid list. I'm curious why it DOESN'T play like a Metroid game, outside of "It's an FPS". As far as I'm concerned, all that changed is the perspective you're presented with. Sure, you didn't see through Samus's eyes before, but even now that you are, she's doing the exact same ##### she's always done.

Again, I agree. You're still running around on a planet (or planets, in Hunter's and Corruption's cases), collecting items to enter new areas, killing monsters and bosses with a power beam, and escaping the planet before it explodes.

One thing that the Prime games improve on, IMO, is the atmosphere. Playing MP in the dark through the eyes of Samus feels a lot more realistic than in a third person perspective,

By simple limitations of the first-person view for instance, looking for hidden secrets stopped being the same. Maybe it was even 3D in general, that killed it, because things like a proper bomb-jump are way too tricky to be enjoyable. And another nice bit about Super Metroid was getting to places -without- having the required item, usually a jump-boost.

The Prime games were less focused on exploration, unlike the 2D games. Most of the Energy Tanks etc were out in the open or required very little searching. Prime was a lot more combat-focused, which does take away from the overall Metroid feel IMO.

While I did enjoy the Prime games, they just don't measure up to the 2D ones.

That.  First person limits what can be done simply by the perspective.  And it's far more than just "changing the perspective".  Like it or not the platforming IS a big part of Metroid since 90% of the extra ##### Samus picks up directly allows her to access more areas by being able to DO more platforming.  Any FPS that ISN'T Wolfenstein for the Tandy has some element of level design that isn't just BOOM BOOM RELOAD BOOM BOOM.  Prime, quite frankly is NO different.  It's primary focus is on combat in a first person perspective and guess what we call that?

Nintend: "It's a first person ADVENTURE!!!"

No.  No it's not.  Myst is a First person adventure.  Shadowgate is a first person adventure.  Metroid Prime is a first person shooter.  Metroid is an action adventure game.  Not a shooter.  And how anyone who plays Metroid Prime can call it anything more than a typical FPS with a few extra bits of back tracking and Metroid theme, let alone Metroid done right in 3D completely baffels me.

Bottom line, the "Prime isn't Metroid" camp dosn't just bleat out "dur dur dur it's just not".  Our arguments are just as detailed as the misguided brain slug victims who delusionally believe Metroid Prime bears any resemblacne to Metroid outside a name.  Is Prime a good FPS?  I guess so based on what people say.  Hooray!  Is it a good METROID game?  ##### no.  And that's ok.  Just don't expect those of us who hate FPS to believe it is.

I enjoy a good FPS now and then, but FPSs shouldn't mix with platformers. Because it doesn't work. You can't even see your feet for crying out loud, how are you supposed to do proper jumps like that?

Worst nightmare for Rez: Capcom making MM9 a first person shooter.

You can actually do that in Metroid Prime... I know I got 100% of items in five hours doing this.

You can't honestly say that it's missing the platforming aspect. There were actually a hand full of times where the platforming (see climbing up any of those tall corridors) became tedious. I will give you that, with the exception of the grapple beam, high jump boots, gravity suit, spider ball, and screw attack, none of the new power ups really expand your platforming abilities.

But wait... that's always been the case.

Pretty sure I did, yep.

There were actually a hand full of times where the platforming (see climbing up any of those tall corridors) became tedious.

Because the tacked on "platform" elements don't belong in a FPS because they just don't work in the genre/perspective.  And yes, Prime is a FPS through and through.

I will give you that, with the exception of the grapple beam, high jump boots, gravity suit, spider ball, and screw attack, none of the new power ups really expand your platforming abilities.

Most of the powerups let you get to new places = platforming.

I don't know about you, but I felt a lot of platforming in the Prime games (especially 2).

Contray to what you think, Rez, platforming CAN be done in 3D. And Metroid Prime does it well (though sometimes overdoes it, like Edge said).

Title: Re: Best metroid game

I felt the semblance of platforming but I didn't really feel platforming. It felt forced. Because it didn't feel like platforming really and it felt like they just put it in so they could say it was platforming.

Apparently I just don't have the tenacity to differentiate between jumping between platforms and jumping between platforms.

Well, the second game has a lot of forced platforming in it, IMO, especially with the dark
world and light world crap. The first and third games are a unison of exploring and platforming (I can think of times when it's still forced, though).
