My friend stupidly sent me a file with this fake spy ware detector (dont ask, long story). And it constantly creates pop up messages saying my comp is at risk unless I buy their scam software.

I went to safe mode and deleted the Xpantivirus folder from program files but I still have the same messages popping up. There's some sites online that explain how to remove it but most of them involve installing different software to remove it, which makes me nervous/paranoid that it's probably more scam software. Anyone had a problem like this before and have any advice on removing it? Thanks.

Norton blows, get Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster, both of which are free and non-invasive.

I use a mix ofSpyware Vanisher, and PC Tools anti-Virus for protection.

They both are free, seem to work pretty well, use very little resources, and have free updates.

If you can't kill it....back up as much as you can; format the HD and reinstall Windows...Or if you don't want this problem again install Ubuntu. ;D

Whatever you do DON'T try AVG, its ugly and it crashed my computer.

Okay, I'm sorry, but I have to say something about this. It is always direly important to spell program names correctly.

AVG is great until it tries to remove viruses, and Sano is right for once, mis-spelling a program name can ruin somebody else's computer, because I'm not sure how smart some people here are.

AVG Free and Spybot: Search and Destroy is all you need.

I wish AdAware Personal was free once again...

Well I found out recently that after I deletred XPAntivirus, some other similar clones showed up so basicly my comp got infested with malware. Right now I'm just running safe mode and giving AVG and Ad-Adware 07 a try, though Ad-Adware gave me an error while I was deleting the infected files saying that I wasn't allowed to.

AVG seems to be doing alright at searching for the infected files so far, do I just set them as quarintine and delete them on the infections button?

I think you are able to delete them directly. I'm not sure your version, but on mine you have to got to the lower-left corner of the window and select delete, then click the button to do so on all.

The Computer's motherboard died not to long after that; so it might not have been AVG.

Still don't like AVG's interface. Its really ugly, and it horks up to many resources.

X Panty-virus?

That's when Teisel downloads himself to you're hard drive, and whips out his 3 and a half inch floppy disc.

Anyway can't help ya, bud. Same reason and prevertedWindow. But what Abe said is the ticket, I did that on my PC and also put Ad-Adware on there.

It pains me to be wrong but I should've used Spybot, as it detected some malware that my other programs couldnt >_> So it removed the malware toolbar that was stuck in my browser.

But yeah, my comp is clean from malware/viruses thanks to the help of some people on a tech forum reading my computer logs. Thanks for the help guys.
