507  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 11 December 2017, 21:13:38
I'm not a huge fan of hand-drawn sprites, to be honest, but could make the action faster, that's true. They make every game look like a Newgrounds one to me and the way they animate and move in gameplay is not to my taste but it's fine. As long as they iron out the stiffness in this 2.5D stuff and maybe tweak the character design then I'm all good.

I'm surprised you feel this way. It never occurred to me that the amateur Newgrounds look might be something inherent to hand-drawn stuff. Did you feel that way about Wario Land for Wii?

It's funny, you'd think I would love hand-drawn anything right? There's something about this type of movement that doesn't feel right for me. Rayman Legends for example.

I just checked out Wariolan for Wii for the first time, it's a lot better than what I'm thinking of. Maybe it's a framerate thing? On the flip side I love how they combined hand-drawn animation with spritework for Street Fighter 3, for example. And framerate doesn't seem to bother me with sprites, like Sonic Mania.

It's some kind of valley of "too crisp and smooth" even though that should be a good thing. It makes some sort of dissonance in my brain, the game-world looks less cohesive.

509  MegaMan Matrix / The Creation Station / Re: Mikero's Artflows on: 8 December 2017, 21:10:12
First of all Ro-Beelzebub is an android but it's not like he came out of nowhere. He was regular old Beelzebub last time Mikero defeated him and his brain energy was transferred to a Life Model Decoy endoskeleton. It's like Mecha-Godzilla isn't called "Mechazilla" or anything, his name was Beelzebub the whole time.

"Robolzebub" sounds made up.

Secondly this is history not juststory. I can't just go and make up something Mikero didn't say, what do I want my head cut off again? Even if he did sound travels 332 metres/s in air and then even slower in my photographer's gellacube so how would I hear it?!

God, no wonder journalists just wanna write blogticles about casting the latest Snarevel Supremoes viddy-file these days.

511  MegaMan Matrix / The Creation Station / Re: Mikero's Artflows on: 8 December 2017, 20:04:29
This photograph was taken thirteen seconds after Mikero powerslammed Ro-Beelzebub through a 105-story skybridge on the executive level of a triplet tower system built for a Neo-Tawain-ese EiL-Sapphire distribution conglomerate operating out of the New People's Republic of Kuala Lumpur. The fight lasted 2 days and 1 night all expenses paid by the Dauphin of Magiorbis who had humanitarian interests in the company's overhead.

The skybridge (before it's destruction) joined towers σ and ρ at ~509 metres (~1670 feet for those in the past), therefore the fall took 10.22 seconds, Mikero landed in virabhadrasana I, as is his wont, though he thought garudasana would have been more flashy (and less practical).

Time under tension makes you swole for a lil bit.

517  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 7 December 2017, 17:07:39
Really, in the end, my only worry is the dissonance between what a Mega Man should be and what this will be.

I know I come off like a curmudgeon 90% of the time, and that's only partly true; I'm all for putting in a new art direction, but I look at things like how small Mega Man is on screen vs. how much BG there is, and how unpolished his jump is (especially the classic "his leg looks like it grows" issue) and I have to be a skeptic.

We've been burned so much on the 2.5D platformers with this franchise that I'd be more comfortable if they just took a stab at a new Battle Network.

522  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 5 December 2017, 18:32:50
If they don't build the game with that in mind then a skin won't be worth much. I'm not saying I need the game to look retro, but I've rarely seen 2.5D work for a game that's meant to as tight and fast as MM. I'm glad they didn't just do 8-bit again because I'm all for switching it up but gameplay should come first, especially in a Mega Man game.

I'm not a huge fan of hand-drawn sprites, to be honest, but could make the action faster, that's true. They make every game look like a Newgrounds one to me and the way they animate and move in gameplay is not to my taste but it's fine. 523  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: Mega Man X Rereleases on: 5 December 2017, 18:09:00
I still say X6 is worse than X7 but it's pretty damn close.

If we take out the story and, ahem, new characters... I just can't deal with the 2.5D in X7, personally. X6 isn't very good at all but the gameplay is more serviceable for me.
524  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 5 December 2017, 17:57:21
On the subject of them not doing 8-bit again, I would not have minded if they used the Mega Man 7 art style. It was a really robust and appealing move for the franchise that was sadly only used in one game. There's a reason so many sprite artists got their start with that as a base.

Still, I'm open to this. Just skeptical.

525  MegaMan Matrix / The Creation Station / Re: MMMQuest 199X - a CYOA "RPG" on: 5 December 2017, 17:48:10

I love it. Everything about this is fantastic. Are you using cut outs of characters and like "sets"? Like the greatest puppet show ever? This is fantastical.

I say we pick Mikero, skill stats are more fun than 'blow up door' or 'cut down door'.

Been waiting for these on Switch for a while. I was just planning on Nintendo's eventual (and long-awaited) virtual console but I'll take what I can get.
528  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 4 December 2017, 20:11:55
Ah OK, I'll be getting it either way. The Switch is a perfect MM console.

Back to MM11: They really need to tweak the animation.

Trying to recreate the spirit of sprite poses in 3D is very difficult. If you look at Mega Man's jump zoomed in (seen in this thumbnail), it's incredibly stiff and the pose has a rigid line of action. It has a lifelessness to it.

For contrast, Mega Man's animation in Smash Bros. 4 were incredibly well adapted from the his 8-bit poses.
529  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 4 December 2017, 20:00:05
Both Legacy Collections are coming to Switch as well!

Hotdamn I was hoping for that! I never got the Legacy Collection on any platform before. Not sure if it's decent but I don't mind. I'm even able to forgive the Anniversary Collections.
530  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 4 December 2017, 19:48:12
I still genuinely hate 2.5D but this is probably the tightest gameplay I've seen in that style. That said, I don't like the animations here. Specifically there's something stiff about his jump and his proportions are a little odd.

But I'm all for a new game. Yes I copy-pasted this response from earlier.
531  Non-MegaMan / Any Other Business? / Re: The MOVIE Thread on: 1 December 2017, 14:24:41
Yeah, like... It's tremendous and I should be over the moon but that trailer was just exactly what I expected it to be. I guess I wanted to learn more about the story? I don't usually like that, but we already know a bunch of the AVENGERS would be in it. Probably not a trailer directed at people who were already gonna go, though.

Plus visually it's a very bland trailer. Like Iron Man in Hulkbuster armor flies in front a city that is very near to his colour palette--That's not a good look. I know the movie will probably knock my socks off (and I'll never get them back on) but the trailer didn't move the needle either way for me.
532  Non-MegaMan / Any Other Business? / Re: The MOVIE Thread on: 29 November 2017, 14:28:11
Thor Ragnarok was the best Thor movie. Considering I hated the first two, that isn't saying a lot but I'm happy to say it was pretty decent movie. Spider-Man Homecoming was serviceable, Black Panther looks tight.

So on that subject, I'm just seeing all this now but... Better a year and a half late, with more films out as examples, than never:

Marvel movies all conform in a way that has a recognizable style. That's all I was saying.

This is 100% true and they did by design. After, I think the first Avengers movie, they started making all the Marvel films look and feel the same. In terms of writing style the Marvel films started to lean much more towards comedy, which has it's place, but has gone overboard. For example, Thor himself shouldn't be cracking actual jokes. His character is best when he says funny things out of ignorance or arrogance (or both). The recent Thor movie shows Thor acting more like Star Lord in it's opening scene, making up of his predicament and joking about spinning on a rope. It's minor, and doesn't hurt the film overall, but Thor isn't the type of character that should know he's funny. This lean towards accessible comedy directly contrasts what DC had done with Man Of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (horrible title) and it's kept Marvel's films more successful. Justice League had Joss Whedon go in and try to punch up the comedy just to compete, and Suicide Squad attempted it with reshoots, however I think Marvel should dial it back to pre-Avengers levels.

For example, Captain America: The First Avenger (mediocre title) is probably still my favourite Marvel film thus far because everything in it is perfectly measured. It has funny moments, and serious ones, and treats the character with a level of respect that I, frankly, wasn't sure they could pull off. At the time, this was a big roll of the dice--Captain America and the Red Skull on film can very easily go wrong. I feel that care for tone in Marvel films had been pushed a bit to the side for a while post-Avengers, however I think they are starting the right the ship with Thor Ragnarok and Black Panther.

Now looks-wise, we have a whole other thing. By shooting digital and adding a blue-grey wash, Marvel forced a bunch of it's films to fit a rubric of "The Marvel Universe". It makes sense in theory; Force the idea of a cohesive universe on these popcorn munching idiots. In practice however, all the movies started to look like garbage (in aesthetic terms only) when the audience wasn't THAT stupid in the first place. We don't need colour grading to inform us that Dr. Strange exists in the same universe as Ultron. I specifically noticed it for myself during the huge fight scene in Civil War. I sat in the theatre thinking "This is all I've wanted and it looks terrible, why is this not enjoyable?"

Recently they've gone back to varying the colour palette at least a little bit, which I appreciate. All of this has been done very well in Marvel's Netflix shows. There is a very well done video essay on the subject of colour grading in Marvel movies.

I've only watched two of the new era DC movies, I think they all look awful, and only one of those had 2/3 good acts. That was Wonder Woman. The other one I've watched was Man of Steel, which is one of the worst things I have ever seen and I've watched people at an apple store before.

The Infinity War trailer came out today. I don't often like to watch trailers for things I know I'm seeing anyway, but I took a look and I honestly have no idea what I think of it.

Mario Odyssey was fantastic. I'm working on the post-story stuff, they give a good amount of incentive to continue.

I did all the shrines in BOTW and then just haven't finished the actual story for whatever reason. I'll get to it soon, I just wanted to upgrade my gear even though there's likely very little point considering how buff Link is now.

I have to keep switching between the original and new graphics because I keep getting lost. Once I find my way, I switch back to the new graphics.

INCREDIBLE game design! What a mechanic!

Hahaha! I pretty much stopped doing freelance 'cause of that. Probably missed out on at least one great opportunity but the stress involved with my last vague client was soul crushing.

Just an FYI I'm working on a little shop thing and I'm probably gonna make a shirt and things out of the Mega Man from those. I won't be adding the other two guys to any merch, I'm not particularly happy with them, but I'm undecided on Roll. You guys think humans would be interested in a few things with that Roll?

539  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Megaman Legacy Collection announced on: 2 November 2017, 17:51:05
X5 is serviceable. It has flaws but it's not over the edge like everything after it.

It's not hard, it can be annoying and cheap, but it's still fine. I would actually say it's a decent starting point if someone wants to play a Megaman game (not that I'd recommend it) but doesn't have the hand-eye coordination for the actually good games, since all the armors and stuff make X5 child's play.

It's like Sonic Unleashed. It's a ##### game but people like it because it was better than Sonic '06, which isn't really an accomplishment...

Perfect comparison.

It's hard with my limited markers. I actually used the same blue marker for both of his tones and just did a little work around. I would have prefered to just have two separate tones but I like how I got around it, there was a moment where I didn't know if it would work, even though it's just a quick doodle it got stressful for a sec.

Managed to do a quick Bass and Roll. It's kind of annoying that taking a photo on your phone makes drawings so much larger.

These are a cheap office bic ballpoint black pen and some 10 year old japanese markers, by the by.
