Yeah Altered Carbon was unexpectedly good. I wouldn't say it's really knocking on HBO's door but I know what you mean. It's 3 books so hopefully people agree with us and they do the next two.

Still gonna recommend Netflix's Lost In Space, despite the negative reviews on Netflix itself. Some of the criticism I understand, it's not a perfect show, but it looks like the reviewers are mostly people who seem to think all characters should be one dimensional or that being stuck on an alien planet should have only 1-2 problems in a row. Of the different iterations of Lost In Space I've seen I think this is the best one and it's unreal how cinematically ambitious it can get. some really good emoting from the children at times too.

I too need some more sci-fi though. Kinda burned through everything I like. Not really a fan of Doctor Who outside of a couple episodes and while I may go back to it I really didn't take to the new Star Trek.
402  Non-MegaMan / Non-MegaMan Games / Re: What game are you playing? on: 9 May 2018, 19:35:49
I can't really get behind this notion that Game-A should be more like Game-B. God of War looks great but it's meant to be a completely different experience from BOTW. An attempt to homogenize either removes intrinsic qualities from both.

For an example, when Splatoon 2 (a great game) came out, there was a G Club podcast on it where basically all of them complained that it was "like Overwatch". Splatoon 2 is perfectly fine the way it is, and it's built from a game that came out before Overwatch. They were just high on Overwatch at the time which coloured their perception of all online competitive games at that point. Things like Splatoon's lack of voice chat are very specific decisions that were made to create an equally very specific experience. Cut to today and people don't talk about Overwatch nearly as often, yet people can't stand that <game> isn't Fortnite.

Anyway... I put 150 hours into BOTW,  haven't even finished the story, did all the shrines, but I still don't mind the weapon durability thing at all except for the legendary weapons (which made getting amiibo items a waste of my time). That aspect keeps you moving and looking in nooks and crannies. And specifically hunting for that one weapon. Maybe a controversial opinion but for me it felt like the proper theme-ing to continue the volition of the gameplay. Perhaps a better version of this would have been to deplete weapon damage like in Bloodborne, which I never saw anyone complain about.

Frankly item inventory was a bigger issue to me.

I don't see it being smart making their console literally obsolete.  If you're a PC gamer you'd never touch a console (because snobs and pc master race horse #####), and if you're a console gamer why buy the console that has all their games on PC?

You're saying it as a negative but from their perspective it's actually a positive. It may sound silly to you but they just wanted a toe in each market and don't care about complete dominance at this point. They legitimately wanted to ease console gamers into playing on PC, which for them has actually been successful. I agree with you overall but that's their outlook and it works for their market.

This is all a known thing already, Sony is on top of the console market right now (and deservedly so). However many agree they will lose ground moving forward as long as they keep shunning online cross-play and other consumer favourite features, especially as the console themselves move closer and closer to fully being "just a PC" (even though consoles are heavily optimized PC's so I actually loathe that argument). Sony doesn't currently have to make those moves because they have a strangehold on the console market. But they will. Microsoft hasn't had a truly vested interest in console wars since the 360 (if that), as far as they are concerned the XBox One is ancillary whereas Playstation comprises the largest part of the Sony Corporation's revenue (with the rest of their entire company on a reported slow decline). I have no love for Microsoft but I can I see why they did that.

Probably won't be picking up the PS4 again until Spider-Man comes out but man GoW looks really fun, and I wasn't into the past ones (changed gameplay style helps).

I really liked the new Lost In Space. I'm a fan of older iterations of it but I think this one was really good despite the mixed reviews.

Microsoft couldn't care less about the XBox at this point (me neither). It's just supplementary to them. They were smart to hybrid their game purchases.

410  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 on: 26 April 2018, 15:34:59
If I remember right, Command Mission is apparently non-canon so it can be seen as an alternate timeline, since apparently it takes place in 22XX, which I think is when Mega Man Zero takes place...

If that's the case then, frankly, I consider MMZ to be the "alternate" timeline. I can live with Command Mission being the actual progression of the X series.

But ultimately I agree; Connect none of it.

As long as it's not like "Better than nothing", then we should be good.  Given Sega's track record with Sonic (Barring Mania) I fear that Capcom won't fare any better with Mega Man.

Thing is, Sonic Mania basically started from fans and Sega bought into it. It was clearly a passion project for Christian Whitehead and his team, and they knew exactly what made those early Sonic games great.

"Sonic Team" itself was meanwhile working on Forces... so basically Sonic Mania makes a huge case in favor of taking these properties away from big corporate teams and keeping it to a core of fan-developers. I think Sega got lucky in this regard, and that Capcom doesn't have the foresight to pick up on that.
411  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 on: 25 April 2018, 18:43:51
He shouldn't be the same colour as his guitar, this is bad design.

Anyway...

it can be a split timeline
1: the zero series happens

2: x6,7,8,9,happen and in x9 axel dies

3: axel gets better and lives so that command mission can happen

How are 2 and 3 a split timeline then? Also the Zero series would still happen after all of them.

I don't like the idea of a split timeline, and I don't even think X9 would really be a good idea at this point, but that's not a split timeline that you described. That's just a list of events in one timeline...

Let's not turn this into a Zelda Timeline thing.  Rez might pop a blood vessel.

Implying he had any left after X7.

I've been cooking steaks and chicken lately that break minds. I tend to just figure out recipes by smell, instead of looking them up. I haven't botched anything yet, so I guess I have the nose for spices. I'm working on getting my chicken recipe down to a static set so if I ever get actual measurable quantities of what to do I'll post it here!

"Through an Ice Wall" and "Desert Planet" are impressive. Since I never played Witcher I think some of them fall flat to me, since I don't know the atmosphere, but those two are really nice.

With all the recent tributes to past releases within Super Mario Odyssey & Kirby Star Allies, it's only fair that the new Metroid should pay homage to all of the monumental installments in the franchise's history. A revamped Ridley won't suffice.

I hope it pays homage to "the corridors of Metroid" and Mother Brain from Captain N: The Game Master.

I only wanted to buy one of these collections but... alright. All good things come to an end, I've held out trying to not own X7 this long.

Though I'm a bit worried I'll buy the damn thing and then they'll come out with physical for both later, like Sonic Mania.

Edit: Forgot to talk about the actual trailer--The Hi-Res filter looks garbage on the original game(s), but looks good on the games I'm not really gonna play. New mode seems interesting but I probably won't bother with it.

Soo.. What about eshop? If they sell them separately on there I might just get each one at a time.
425  MegaMan Matrix / The Creation Station / Re: Mikero's Artflows on: 6 April 2018, 16:07:10
Being able to detach pieces fits with the modular helmet tech too. I'm imagining some sort of keyed magnet system that disallows anyone else from attaching the armor to themselves , but having it attach to a steel/carbon fiber mesh regular ninja suit.

You've completely got the kind of thing I'm going for. The magnet system (and video) is really fantastic! The tight polymagnet seems perfect for the actual attachment of the armor to him, which means I could lose things like straps and buckles from the design altogether.

It's almost like the old costume design exists under the armor. I've definitely be leaning towards the mesh but I've also been considering liquid body armor for a few reasons. In fact, one type of liquid body armor currently being researched uses magnetorheological fluid, a substance that can change to change to nearly-solid when exposed to magnetism, so I could see a hybrid of those two working... Almost like weaving liquid armor into itself or soaking a steel/carbon mesh in MR fluid (instead of soaking ballistic plates). That actually might make the undersuit technically stronger than the armor pieces, haha!

Gonna keep thinking about that. Both that magnet system you linked and fluid armor fit well with the whole motorcycle turning into armor thing.

I tackled this one with a more animation-based (but not animation-friendly) style to make it simpler to understand how certain things relate. It's difficult to balance where pieces/panels of armor should be for protection while maintaining his overall mobility.

Part of that is why I looked to the designs from the Arkham games. The character moves more like a Nightwing type of character than Batman, but everyone's design in those games is well-designed for this. For the most part anyway (the Arkham Knight himself has an incredible helmet design but his body comes off a little clunky).

Nightwing's armor itself is a little more subdued than this character needs (story purposes), so I took more inspiration from Deathstroke and Batman, but tighter/smaller. It just can't be as bulky as those guys, but needs to be modular (since, at least for now, it's still basically a Transformer).

I also have been referencing Metal Gear, but that's obvious.
426  MegaMan Matrix / The Creation Station / Re: Mikero's Artflows on: 4 April 2018, 19:11:14
My schedule is pretty awful but let me know what you're thinking!

Posted on: 16 March 2018, 12:25:05

Did this one while I was colouring the other image. Playing around with ideas for the body armor. I really liked the way they did Batman's armor in Arkham Knight, where the chest was in multiple parts, connected by strong fiber, which allows actual complicated movement unlike most armor chest pieces. It's really evident around the Bat symbol itself.

Anyway, for the types of acrobatics this character would get into, that kind of function is essential if he's going to have armor on. That's also partly the reason that his armor here is more based in small panels and bulletproof mesh weaves. That... and the idea that pieces can then be replaced more easily.

Oh boy can you ever, I'll post some shots of it in action later tonight, with comparisons between the effect levels. I mean you can change the bokeh shape and intensity along with focal length and DOF distance threshold.

Here's NVidia's full list of supported games.

Just jumped in and got some shots. The Imgur album has all the captions you'll need to explain what was happening while I did it.

All done on a controller, btw. Super intuitive.

Here it is.

Nice, that's exactly the type of control I like. I just want it to simulate my actual camera as much as possible. It's just not "epic" without DOF!

just imagine shooting out trains with that
and using superpower mods to fly and eye beam your enemies as you do it

That's just Saints Row IV then.

I just realized the chrome writing's bezel disappeared upon resize, but I'm actually quite OK with it.

I tinkered with this for a big each day at work, while animation scenes froze. I mainly just wanted to mess around with the reflections on the armour (specifically way the city reflects with many different light sources) and also toy with some textures (undersuit, scarf) just to give you guys a better idea than the last image... then I just kinda kept going and going (as is tradition). The titles very much came out of the ether while I was thinking about other stuff.

Make sure to click the image so the resolution is good.

I haven't posted this stuff anywhere else yet, this is really the first one I like, but when I do I'll be putting in some extra sketches too. Next, I would like to work on designing more of the body, and also the bike and character without armour.

444  Non-MegaMan / Non-MegaMan Games / Re: Teelio's Mandatory Metroid Thread on: 12 March 2018, 12:54:17
I think people are reading into the name a little too much. You're completely right that it shouldn't be called "Metroid Prime" if Metroid Prime itself was destroyed, but I think the name of this new iteration falls more on marketing than anything else. People have been saying "WHERE'S METROID PRIME 4?!?!?!?" for a decade now, even if that technically doesn't make sense with the story.

The title "Metroid Prime" is more indicative of a gameplay style for Metroid universe games than anything else, so it's their way of saying this will be a first-person shooter and not a side-scroller. However, I bet they'll find a way to make the plot work enough to deserve the title; Whether that's some kind of resurrection/clone/new version of the Metroid Prime/Dark Samus or by placing the game before the events of Prime 3.

Though I had fun playing Metroid Prime 2, and the demo for Hunters, I'm a much bigger fan of the traditional Metroid games, personally, from a gameplay standpoint. Whatever the case, I would prefer a new installment to Metroid's storyline instead of the constant re-hash they always do. I still own and PLAY the Gameboy cart of Metroid II: Return of Samus, but it's really hard to find a big difference between Metroid, Metroid II, and Super Metroid (especially since Super Metroid is basically a remake). I thought Fusion was a really fresh take on the game, and a nice way to go in a new direction.

And I think people hate on Other M far too much, but I understand it's large flaws with story points and gameplay limitations (#####in' Adam). That said, it mostly gets hate because of one admittedly ill-advised scene.
445  MegaMan Matrix / The Creation Station / Re: Mikero's Artflows on: 7 March 2018, 17:56:16
Well Rez is only partly right, hahah.

1) Painfully digging through my very very old art to get you up to the same speed as everyone else here:

What I'm doing here is reimagining a character I created on this site over 10 years (wow) ago through making my own sprite art and sprite animations. Back in the day, that is what we did here; People made their own characters/avatars. This why you see Nova Man and Red Priest with their own custom art.

The character is named Mikero and this is his definitive "Mega Man" (in Powered Up! style) universe design, however there's been many aternate versions of the character including versions for other games and more contemporary and realistic ones. We also had a lot of our own side stories and one-off tales around here. Hell, here's an early design for the bike. At some point during those years I thought up an original story involving the character and his origins and started a comic of it, which I only showed a tiny bit of here.

Snare's recent CYOA thread, as well as another friend of mine, inspired me to tinker around with the character again, and here we are in 2018. Honestly though, he WILL be needing a new name if I ever want to develop this into something.

2) Le Discocutre

3) "Pot holes and the Proletariat" is close enough for now, until I can articulate the story better!

Hmm, probably due to the head lights being lit up, which wouldn't always be the case. They're used contextually. There's also some camouflage tech he has (that I want to expand on later) that negate that as an issue. But really, someone who's good at stealth could wear a traffic cone and still go unseen anyway.
448  Non-MegaMan / Non-MegaMan Games / Re: Dragonball FighterZ on: 2 March 2018, 17:09:33
I actually like Broly, but maybe that's because when I was a kid all the movies and stuff were so mysterious because they hadn't come here yet or were incredibly hard to get. All the mysteries of DBZ washed a way over time either through it's own plot or the internet (or both). "Who is the super saiyan of legend was always a big debate.

Anyway I agree, we don't need more Super Saiyans and definitely not more characters all with the Kame House fighting style. Except I think kid Goku would still be fun. Actually I wish every Saiyan didn't automatically go Super as well. It would be awesome if all characters started out as their base versions and then you could power up during the match if you had enough ki or something.

I just hope they add in more characters that aren't so similar. Get crazy with it, put Pikkon in there. OK fine he's essentially Piccolo... But a fighting game that really spans all the franchise would be amazing.

Actually we're just too polite not to learn French. Our lovely neighbours from The Sovereign Nation of Quebec still frown slightly when we're bad at pronouncing things though.

Real talk, franco-Ontariens are looked down on pretty badly by the Quebecois just because they're from Ontario but still French. Like they're not "real" french people. Seriously, people from France give less of a ##### about this stuff than people from Quebec.

You're welcome to try it, and I look forward to seeing yours in colour.

The main thing I'd keep about Majikn's appearance is a distinguishing buster that works as a long range silenced-sniper with two front-facing eyes, unlike the one I originally drew. It's not a morphing buster so moving parts would be involved to give the hand underneath more freedom when it's inactive.
Other than that, the character's a reploid, typically green, a bit shorter than X, quiet. Probably with the same type of resting face that Mega Man has in Smash. Large observing eyes and a small mouth. Any doodads that I'd add, if any, I'd probably try to make them appear to serve any function that would somehow improve stealth in a world where many enemies would have things like innate IR, heat, and night vision.

And see, this is what I mean. I didn't even intend to give a lot of detail there and I still came out with two paragraphs.

As a long-form writer, two paragraphs isn't a problem. Toss me a PM with any other details and the old pic!

Here's the colour mock-up.
I spent time playing with lighting for no reason so this is a bit purply-er than it should be.

Largely an experiment.

I have it on Steam, noticed you had it too John. I've only played like an hour and a half so far but I think it's really well done. I absolutely love the way they blended the graphics so it actually looks closer to the show than games in the past.

I heard it's kind of a bitch to play with friends online? At least that's the story for Playstation.

I haven't done much of the single player but I like the way they did the cutscenes, it's nice video but you're not just watching a movie. They animate in and out of holds really well so it moves at your pace but is still watchable, though I can't speak to the actual story.

I like original Dragon Ball more than Z, so characters like Tenshinhan and Yamcha are important to me. I would like to see more characters become unlockable (I haven't looked at what there is) from that era. How awesome would it be to have Lunch appear in a fighting game? Or Yajirobe to add another swordsman? Gokus as a kid (from original not GT) would be fantastic. I think this game would be far better if it had a huge character selection. Even Tao Pai Pai, General Blue, and Upa's father.

Also Uub, who is underutilized constantly.

Honestly, I know you can debate the whole "they're dwarfed by super saiyans" etc. stuff, but with Super I think Dragonball has gotten ridiculous enough we just have a fighting game with power levels don't really matter, it's just for fun.

Not really my thing.  Maybe when they add Tiencha into the game

Is there a Yamshinhan? That's a more Dragon Ball type name.
