Xbox Spring Sale has started. I picked up Battlefield: Hardline, Grand Theft Auto 5, and ReCore.
252  Non-MegaMan / Non-MegaMan Games / Re: What game are you playing? on: 27 March 2019, 19:11:20
I started playing ReCore last night. It has some annoying glitches, the save system is a bit ass, and the camera isn't always the best, but I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Finished watching Gimme Danger, which is a documentary about Iggy & The Stooges. Interesting listening to them talk about their times.

If you get a chance, check out Peter Jackson's World War I documentary "They Shall Not Grow Old". The switch to the colorization is jarring, and you suddenly feel like you're there with them, no longer watching men filmed over 100 years ago. It's haunting, sobering, beautiful, and ugly. Stick around for the short documentary post-credits where Jackson talks about how the documentary was made and his personal attachment to the project.

One crazy and sad moment that the film didn't reeeally mention but Jackson did later, is that there's one shot where you're watching a bunch of soldiers looking at the camera, some laughing, some looking scared out of their minds...pretty much all of them died 30 minutes after the footage was taken.

I watched a few of the episodes with my oldest son (who is 4 1/2) a couple of weeks ago via the CN app on Roku. It has most of the episodes released thus far, but not all. Anyway, I thought it was a weird retelling but not the worst thing I've seen. I mean, you'll ##### bricks over it if you know anything about Mega Man; but if you're my son, who thus far has only watched me play Mega Man 2 and the Mega Man 11 demo, it's right up your alley. It's meant for little kids, not us...and he loves it. He asks when we're going to watch it again, because he likes it, but he also knows that his dad likes Mega Man. So...yeah, I'll keep watching with him.

Also, it looks like the show isn't dead as we thought; there's a toy series coming out.

I just reviewed RBI Baseball 19...somehow it managed to be worse than last year's game, but of course they released a huge patch a couple of days after the review. I don't know why they just don't release the Home Run Derby part as a separate game; it's the only fun part.

Right now I'm playing (and going to review) One Piece: World Seeker and Realms of Arkania: Star Trail (which was released last year?).
256  Non-MegaMan / Any Other Business? / Re: The MOVIE Thread on: 14 March 2019, 18:55:34
My oldest son loved it although he through Prowler was scary at points. He wants a Miles "big guy" (the 12 inch figures) now.

I fired up SSX 3, and it plays just as well as I remember it. Today it would receive negative marks for the lack of content, but it's a solid and fun game. I'm a little surprised that they haven't tried to do a remaster of it.

I also find it amusing that the two games I play the most on my Xbox One right now are SSX 3 and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, neither of which are native to the Xbox One.

261  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 on: 18 January 2019, 16:04:05
If I could've afforded to pay for the physical releases, I probably would have. But I couldn't. At least I'm finally able to play these games.
262  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 on: 16 January 2019, 17:26:05
Yeah, got them digitally for $40, also picked up the Crash + Spyro bundle for a little less.
263  MegaMan Series / X Series / Re: Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 on: 15 January 2019, 16:46:39
So I bought the big #####-off Mega Man bundle at Christmas because I could score both Mega Man Legacy collections, both Mega Man X Legacy collections, and Mega Man 11 for like $40.

I fired up Mega Man X7 for the first time because I was like "Maybe I'll handle this better in a 3D environment," yeah I never got past that confusing door puzzle at the start because I couldn't figure out how to get all four switches to open at the same time, and the aiming controls are ass.

Thanks guys. My dad is doing a lot better although he seems to have gotten a more negative attitude as of late. We moved to the smaller house, which is okay, but the move had its own issues, and...oy. It just hasn't been a good fall.

On the other hand, I love my job that I started in September. I work in Philadelphia at the HQ for URBN (Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, etc) doing IT work. I really, really like my job and the people I meet. And the dogs I get to pet, as they let us bring dogs to work with us. I'm giving serious thought to bringing Angus (my dog) with me.

So there's that.

I'm writing this from the hospital, where my wife and I are waiting for the birth of our son, Samuel Atticus Garner. They began inducing her on Wednesday night (7/9), but she isn't dilated enough for them to break her water. My wife was going stir-crazy because she isn't allowed to walk around, eat, or shower unless they take her off the pitocin (the medicine which is supposed to help induce labor). Meanwhile, I'm fine because I don't need much, although I wish the chair I'm sleeping in was a little more comfortable.

We're now watching the Harry Potter marathon on ABC Family while her contractions are getting stronger. I'm hoping that he will be born tomorrow, the original date that was estimated for his birth. Your prayers and thoughts for us would be appreciated.

My dad had a mini-stroke last weekend and is now being tested for thyroid cancer. We are moving into a smaller (but closer to our workplaces) house in a month. I barely get to see my family. And work is ramping up.

To say I'm overwhelmed right now is a bit of an understatement.
271  Non-MegaMan / Any Other Business? / Re: The MOVIE Thread on: 28 October 2018, 13:16:58
I watched Action Point last night, as it's already out on Bluray. If you're a fan of Jackass, you'll be disappointed because there aren't enough stunts or gags to make it really worth your time, and Knoxville is really starting to show his age. In the opening scenes (at Action Point), he's walking with an obvious limp, but supposedly he ended up going to the ER like 14 times during shooting of the film, so...yeah. On the other hand, the plot isn't written well enough for you to care, so it's kind of like "Who exactly was the target market for this movie?" It would've brought in plenty of 15 year-olds back in the mid 00s, but nowadays I wonder if today's kids even watch Jackass, and I can't see it bringing in older fans (which it obviously didn't at the box office). It wasn't terrible, but it's very forgettable. I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

Posted on: August 26, 2018, 12:45:12 AM

Watching Jumpin' Jack Flash as it was a favorite of my wife when she was a kid, and I've been watching The Masque of the Red Death (with Vincent Price) in chunks when I get a chance.

Tried playing Battlefield 1, which I'm pretty sure the point of the game was "being a solider during this war #####ing sucked", and is not what I need in my life right now.

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is a ton of fun and is exactly what I need. I like the Skies of Arcadia level best.

Playing through Just Cause 3. The missions aren't particularly fun, but going around and liberating the different cities and bases usually are. Half of the time I'm like "this is bull#####, I should just delete this game off my harddrive" and the other half I'm having a blasty-blast.
275  MegaMan Series / Classic Series / Re: Mega Man 11 on: 8 September 2018, 16:23:06

Picked up Batman: Return to Arkham (the first two Arkham games with prettier graphics), Metro bundle, Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, and Crypt of the Serpent King.

Had to review F1 2018 for my friend's podcast. There's a definite curve if all you've ever played is arcade racers like me, and holy ##### is there a lot to the game, but it is beautiful and challenging. Easy recommendation from me.

Currently playing through the campaign of Star Wars: Battlefront II (the EA one). The game looks great and plays pretty well, but the campaign is so ho-hum with tons of ##### we already heard before from the Expanded Universe. All they had to do is make her have untapped Force powers that she suddenly discovers and boom, we would've had a standard late 90s/early 00s Star Wars story. I'm glad I only paid $9 for this game.

I GUARANTEE you Xbox will dead last in sales for this.  Switch followed by PS4 followed by Xbone is how it's going to go.  It makes... zero sense to do a demo only on the platform you won't see many sales on.

Or maybe Microsoft forked over some cash to give their userbase a first taste. They seem to be going HAM on exclusives as of late, and perhaps while they couldn't persuade Capcom to make it a timed exclusive, they could've gotten a demo out of it. Just conjecture, because I don't see any other point in a demo as well.

My wife got me into the show The Good Place, and the show is fantastic. Great entry point for different concepts of philosophy, and I'd be surprised if professors aren't showing clips in class.

I also accidentally saw a clip of a Canadian show called "Letterkenny Problems", which at first I thought was a webshow about Fulton county, PA (which has a Fort Letterkenny nearby). Honestly, accents aside, it works for both places. Anyway, it was pretty damn funny and I want to see more, but only two seasons have made it stateside and I can't buy it on Vudu or other platforms.

I have to review Forsaken Remastered and Overcooked 2 for my friend's podcast. Can't say anything that constitutes as a review, so you'll just have to listen! Or wait until the embargo is off.

During the ultimate sale I picked up Just Cause 3, Saints Row IV: Reelected, Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition, Overcooked, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Mega Battle. I also got Decay: The Mare from a friend for free.

I had to play a retro-inspired racing game called "Wheelspin Frenzy" for my friend's podcast. Hated just about everything in the game, from the bull##### cheating AI, you can't unlock other tracks without doing various tasks, only local multiplayer, etc...I deleted it off my Xbox One as soon as the review was recorded.

Otherwise, I've been playing Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Super Mega Baseball 2. Doing an elimination tournament in SMB2, which is taking longer than I figured it would, and because I'm not playing with a custom team, it seems as though I'm not hitting pitchers as frequently. Need to ask the developers if the two are tied in, but it seems like after crushing the opposing team in the first two games, their mojo won't recover for the rest of the series, which allows my team to take it easy.
287  Non-MegaMan / Non-MegaMan Games / Re: What game are you playing? on: 6 July 2018, 20:30:12
Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion is pretty fun. Though some of the stages cross the line into the unfair zone of challenge (and I'm good at the game).

One stage, in which you have to beat the clock, is impossible to finish if you have a FRACTION less ink than required, because you have to do everything down to the millisecond in it, no time to refill. I beat that level, but have had others feel even harder. I don't mind difficulty, but since the ability to use the things you earn in the main game are locked until you finish the Octo Expansion (even if you've received the items) it's a little annoying. Overall I feel like it'll be worth it in the end, it's just a bit over the top.

I read an article on Kotaku about the DLC's plot, and ##### that game is crazy.
288  Non-MegaMan / Any Other Business? / Re: The MOVIE Thread on: 4 July 2018, 01:32:58
Guns are Cable's main thing though. When I was a kid, my three favorite Marvel characters were Cable, War Machine, and the Punisher. Why? Because they brought the big guns. Everything else was secondary.

I watched At the Earth's Core, which is an old British sci-fi film from the 1970s. If you ever get a chance to see it, you should probably do it baked.

290  Non-MegaMan / Any Other Business? / Re: Matricians: What are you watching? on: 19 June 2018, 00:09:01
So back in 2007, my buddy and I went to the movies every Friday and saw 2-3 films because they had a rad student discount and we didn't have classes that day. One time we were supposed to see the Nicholas Cage movie "Next", but I guess someone couldn't see into the future because the prints never arrived. So the theater's policy was that if you went to them and claimed that you were going to see the film they couldn't show, they'd take down your name and address and you got to see whatever you wanted for free. We didn't intend to see Meet the Robinsons, but there it was in 3D and it perfectly fit into our schedule. Pretty fun movie, but I digress.

Fast forward to now, and me watching movies as I feed Silas bottles in the morning. 11 years after I was supposed to see it, I finally did. It wasn't bad, pretty forgettable though, but I felt like Julianne Moore was phoning the whole movie in.

I'm supposed to be playing Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians for my friend's podcast. It's pretty much a prettier version of Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes or whatever that DC game was where you just collect characters, give them various attributes, and battle them. It's okay, but these games are a huge timesuck at the start when you can't just sim everything. After my review, I'll probably drop it, but I don't know yet.
292  Non-MegaMan / Non-MegaMan Games / Re: Heartbreak High made by our own ASR! on: 8 June 2018, 13:58:11
I tooled around with it for twenty minutes the day it came out - I got 6/13 but missed one. Fun game, but I wasn't able to finish it in one sitting (is there a save feature?).

I also helped get him a review on the podcast my friend does, so I was pretty pleased about that.

My favorite quote from Tom Baker (4th Doctor, my first Doctor...you never forget your first Doctor) is from "The Horns of Nimon"

Doctor: Aneth! That's a charming place!
Seth: You been to Aneth?
Doctor: Yes, but not yet!

And then everyone gives the Doctor a puzzled look.

Watched "Midway", which is about the decisive US naval victory against the Japanese in WWII. It was okay, but some of the acting was crappy, the real footage used was not as exciting as one would've hoped, I wasn't thrilled that there was no epilogue given for the surviving characters, and I'm pretty sure this movie was a last-ditch effort to persuade the public that what we were doing in Vietnam was right (that also came out after the war was over). The timing of the movie, the amount of real footage they got to use, and the fact that bunch of heroic Americans are killing a bunch of Asians feels very much like expensive Pentagon propaganda.
