Title: What it Truly is to be a Maverick.
Post by: Rama Olendris on 28 February 2008, 17:35:49
I'm feeling a little lost lately, and this is odd because I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable when it comes to the Megaman games however now I'm not so sure.

I've played about half of the X games in English and the other half in Japanese and the way how both of sides define Maverick is a little bit different but very close... And then (yes shoot me for referencing the Zero series) the definition changes again... What I want to know is what is truly is to be a 'maverick'/irregular.  Is there a set definition?

As far as I know Maverick=Reploid who breaks the first rule of robotics (Don't hurt humans)
Then again, I've never played any Megaman game on japanese, so I don't know this different definition...

I thought it was primarily that, but then I read somewhere (forgot which game) that a Maverick was a reploid that went against its original programming- in other words if the reploid refused to do something it was programmed to do, it was maverick. At least that's what the whole statement inferred.

That makes no sense, as the entire idea behind Reploids is that they possess free will and self-awareness, and thus would not be 'programmed' to do anything.

A maverick technically is someone who goes against a group of sorts.

I feel the term "Maverick"  in the MMX world needs to be redefined.

Since there are "mavericks" such as Repliforce and the Rebellion Army who have no intention to cause harm to humans and only which to seek independence.  See the thing is that they aren't really mavericks.  They are just reploids who felt oppressed and decided to declare independence.  But they were hunted and terminated for their ideals which I felt was over doing it.

Yeah, I think it's to do with taking their free will too far.

I was thinking that it was Reploids taking their free will 'too far' according to humanity until the X4 stuff and the things in the Zero series. It just baffles me... I suppose the term 'maverick' is flung to try and control reploids?

Title: Re: What it Truly is to be a Maverick.
Post by: Xero on 28 February 2008, 21:21:02
If reploids have free will then no one should be trying to control them period.

Reploids like humans have the right to choose their own destiny and make their own path in life.

I agree that they should have that right... However examine Human history and you'll see that we've only just barely been able to address total 'freedom' recently... and even now it's not totally perfected.

It's like this.

Dr.Cain:  Oh cool!  Let's create reploids with the ability to think and make their own decisions and force them to do labor!  It's genious!

Yeah...exactly like that.

Yeah...exactly like that.

I got that down, Reploids created for the purpose to aid humans... Because I highly doubt humans are -that- charitable and decided to capriciously create a new race and not have them have any use. So Reploids were 'copied' off of X for their abilities.

Now with their abilities most obviously helped humans in... whatever they needed help in, then some went Maverick (by hurting humans, rebelling against 'you must do this' or contracting the Maverick virus) then the Maverick Hunters were created blah blah blah....

...

Then Lumine said 'blah blah we have the power to go Maverick at will.' in X8 which sounds like all the instances where reploids were Maverick they were infected with the Maverick Virus.

I'm sorry for rambling.... I'm just trying to figure this out.

Doesn't maverick just mean (simply put) that you're a reploid who's been infected with the maverick virus?

(And the Celtics lost to the Utah Jazz in a movie once, so there!)

Title: Re: What it Truly is to be a Maverick.
Post by: ChaosVortex on 3 April 2008, 21:03:45
It basically means to be a rebel. Reploids were intended to work for humans and/or live in peace with them. Mavericks do the opposite, and they can do it by their own choice. Reploids have the ability to choose to obey or disobey humans. Being a maverick isn't necessarily the cause of the Maverick virus.

Title: Re: What it Truly is to be a Maverick.
Post by: Cherry on 3 April 2008, 23:23:04
My theory is that the definition STARTED as "A Reploid infected with the Maverick Virus", but mutated, possibly at the government level, to include "Any Reploid who opposes the current state of things."

My theory is that the definition STARTED as "A Reploid infected with the Maverick Virus", but mutated, possibly at the government level, to include "Any Reploid who opposes the current state of things."

That's what I was getting the impression of lately. I first thought it was just "Reploid infection" or "reploids killing humans" but now maybe it's more of 'reploid not obeying humans'.

Title: Re: What it Truly is to be a Maverick.
Post by: Mikero on 5 April 2008, 07:25:04
The Maverick virus is probably just an assumption made by androids who think too logically. They probably assume any android that disobeys programming has gone wrong.

Title: Re: What it Truly is to be a Maverick.
Post by: TheRedPriest on 5 April 2008, 20:04:56
Maverick was originally used to describe Reploids who went berserk due to technical issues.  However, as the full scope of giving Reploids free will became aparent (what kind of idiots didn't see that comming?) it was more widely applied to Reploids who chose to cause harm to others.  As reploid technology evolved, mechanical failure became far more rare and the term is generally the Reploid equilivant of "criminal" now.

TIME FOR MEGA MAN AND THE ROBO POLICE TO GET TO WORK!

Best answer yet- that makes more sense.

It gets confusing/frustrating for me because I played about one half in Japanese and the other in English and the translations blur and sometimes I can't remember which language the translation in my mind belong. Fortunately I'm playing through all the games in their English translations and things are becoming more clear. Some might think the translations are equivalent- however there are slight differences through implications and language that were lost in translation.  :(

Anyway we were talking about Prime THREE, which is probably the best of the three but I wouldn't know. I liked it. It was the only Metroid game I played through, and I liked it.

As for "What it Truly is to be a Maverick," I imagine it involves being a robot and attempting violent attacks on the establishment.

I don't see how anyone can say they're anything like the old ones, it's not even a debate.

There's some exploring, yes, and it's open world, yes, but Prime is a freaking FPS. Entirely entirely entirely different idea than a platformer. Entirely.

I wouldn't say FPS is a fun genre, but yeah.  Changing genre then saying it's exactly the same "But in 3D" is bull##### of the highest caliber.

I still have high hopes for Dread, that easter egg in Prime 3 mentioned something about Dread, but Nintendo said it was just an easter egg and thats it..

Businesses work like that... You're the mule and they dangle a carrot in front of your nose. As long as you go after it they'll still attempt/pretend to feed you.

Except Nintendo does something worse, they dangle the delicious carrot and when you're close, they give you something else instead, and that's the rotten garbage known as Prime.

Good game#Good metroid game.

I tried prime, I didn't like it mostly because I don't like FPSes. To those who do, it might be good, but it will never be better than 2d metroid games. Ever.
... It annoys me that theres so many FPS fans out there...
That's why most of my teachers think games=violence...

Yeah, my history teacher won't let us bring printed homework, because some dumbasses copy paste the info without reading. Maybe because he is 66 he dislikes what he is/was not used to, the guy sort of despises computers.

That's barely (if anything) has anything to do with video game related violence though, and that actually kinda makes sense. However, teachers that just assume that video games make kids want to go and bust each others brains out though need to be re-educated.

There are some pretty ignorant/stupid people in the world.  LOTS.

Fixed for accuracy.

Speaking as an FPS fan *keeps distance from Rez* I still don't see how these games are encouraging violence. If idiots can't distinguish between the Internet and reality, that's their own damn fault, and I won't allow myself to be deprived of my online fragging fun for their sake.

I was directing it towards Slug's post, but I was thinking that same thing.

Try me.

LOL. Acting tough on the internet. Get a life, you nerd. :P

Stop with your grudges. It's bad for your health as it is unnecessary.

Mmmyeah.

You were the one acting tough and I never any "grudges", I actually have no idea what you mean by that. I wasn't serious or thinking your were either, Mr. Big. I think that much is obvious, and it was pretty clear I was playing along.
