Title: Death Note

Anyone else like this anime? It's really the only anime I can realy get into. I don't read the magnas though.

If I were still into anime, I would love Death Note, I'm sure of it. However, I just can't bring myself to care anymore.

I watched an episode the other day, and I have to say the detail in the art is impressive, especially the work on the backgrounds. As for the story itself, I can't say since I only did see that one ep, but it's interesting.

I loved it. Favorite anime so far.

I can just imagine what that women felt when Light told her "Because......I'm Kira.*evil grin*"

Creepy goodness.

Seems a bit dark, and I've gone to resent all that "dark is cool" crap.. I'll pass on this one.

I watched the entire series in about a week roughly two months ago. While I loved the first two-thirds of it or so, it lost something along the way.

It's been a long time since I've seen an anime with such intentional moral ambiguity and wit though, even if it is occasionally heavy-handed.

Someone once linked me to a live-action adaptation that was made in Japan. A full movie, and it seemed like high quality. The demon guy looked amazing special FX-wise.

I havent seen the anime but finished the manga like a month or two ago. Yeah to be honest I almost though the main character was doing the right thing, it's smart, interesting and does make you think.

Post by: Edgecrusher on 4 December 2007, 22:33:32
I saw the live action thing too... but I can't honestly think of any actor who could represent L well. His nature was almost inhumanly concise, and I don't think you can correctly express that unless you have absolute control of yourself.

I don't honestly think anyone has that.

My friend makes me watch this series. X_X

It's not bad though, and I told him I'm only watching the dub.

Post by: ASR on 4 December 2007, 22:35:06
Is L named so because there's no actual sound for that letter in Japanese?

Title: Re: Death Note

The English dubbing is surprisingly good, I'll give it that.

I don't know much japanese, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Someone once told me that (same guy who linked me to the movie), but he's overly obsessed and I don't like him much. Regardless, I thought that was pretty clever.

For an Anime with no action or giant robots it's pretty watchable.
Too bad all the lame fantards make me want to hate it.

...Yet they call him "Eru"?

Makes sense doesn't it? Even when there's no way to pronounce something, you still attempt to find a way to verbalize it. Like when Prince changed his name to a symbol and everyone still called him "The artist formerly known as Prince". It just so happens that this symbol already has a name.

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: Machine Man on 4 December 2007, 23:41:34
L is supposed to be a cover up for his real name, or maybe like a code name.

Remember Q, M, and R in James Bond? Same case.

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: ASR on 4 December 2007, 23:48:14
Of course it's a cover-up for his real name, but I mean there's a reason it was chosen, right?

Title: Re: Death Note

I read the comic.

I LOVED it up until the little time-skip.

Then it just got ridiculous and boring.

With as symbolic and deliberate as the rest of it is, it's a wonder anyone would think otherwise.

It's not about dark being cool, it's about dark being dark. It's really stupid to "pass on" everything that you think is dark just because it's supposedly some sort of cliché in your eyes.

I can't really say much because it's the one anime I ever finished, but I enjoyed it.

I read the first issue and was throughly un-wowed.

I hear good things so I may give it another go.

Post by: Laucorn on 5 December 2007, 21:20:37
It was a decent anime, but I agree with it sorta getting a bit dull about 2/3's of the way through.

It's worth watching, just to see the protagonist and the villian act loony and try to justify his actions. Alot of the time those actions cruel or just wonky, if not clever.

Where do they end the anime? IF it's the comic's ending, then no. By that point I was thoroughly annoyed.

Title: Re: Death Note
Basically Kira's helper screws up by doing something he shouldn't have and so they end up dying when they do this kind of "final showdown" in some abandoned warehouse. I obviously wanted Kira to win, but that's my fandom talking, I actually just didn't expect that turn of events.
Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: Majikn on 6 December 2007, 18:39:13
I liked it.
They were trying to make you expect Kira to win by making him think of the whole thing and why he should be winning until the 30 seconds went down and nobody died of a heart attack. Then he was all "WTF NOOO MY GODLINESS IS FALTERING"

When L died at first I was somewhat confused. I was like "AHH DON'T SMILE AT HIM, HE'S FAKING" but then he wasn't and I was like "Oh."
Title: Re: Death Note

I can more or less agree on the L part there.

Though Mello was more interesting to me than Near. Near just sat on his backside and used L's research. Mello actually did crap...although random with it. LOL.

Is L named so because there's no actual sound for that letter in Japanese?

I thought I responded to this but I guess I didn't.

I figured L was used simply because it succeeded K, as in Kira. K, L, M, N. I guess it depends on if the entire story was planned or if it was decided to continue the series just before the time skip, because maybe the K and L were a coincidence that was added to on purpose.

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: Edgecrusher on 10 December 2007, 15:01:28
L was going by L long before the populous named the unseen force of justice "Kira".

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: Majikn on 10 December 2007, 19:30:45
True. It isn't more than a coincidence to you if you're an actual character inside the story noticing it, but we as readers can look at it and see that they're connected and suddenly the possibility of it being done on purpose becomes plausible. Not that it actually has any significant artistic meaning, though.

Anyone else like this anime?

One of the best series I've ever seen and definately amongst the mega hits of this year's season. The way the story is told, the music, the characters, everything is done tremendously awesome, although the end did suck (but that's what more or less everyone else thinks).

I was tempted to look at those spoilers. It's like an urge, an urge that drives me insane. Now I lay, twitching with the urge to click on the dreaded spoilers.........bleh.

Now to get back on topic, wasn't it funny when Lite said "AND I'LL EAT A PATATO CHIP!" in a really dramatic way? lol

Title: Re: Death Note

Death Note is entertaining in the same way Yu-Gi-Oh is: unintentionally.

Really, this series is watchable, but it's just too ridiculous.  Light should have been caught a hundred times over, but whenever that would happen, he catches a "lucky break" and then brains his way out of what should have been game over.  Not just once or twice mind you, but EVERY DAMN TIME.  Now, having the protagonist think his way out of a situation is good, but not when he has to be given plot kai luck of the gods to be able to do that in the first place.  Light thought ahead a lot, but not enough.  If not for the plot dependant luck there would have been no story.  And therein lies the fact the show is hilarious.  Seeing the utter disregard for what should be L's side nailing him by just out thinking/out performing/out doing Light by him being almost told by the author that "hey you're going to get caught if you don't..." is funny.

In short, I don't hate Death Note, but it's not a very good anime either.

Wouldn’t it be sord of cool if there was a Death Note game for the DS, where you use the touch screen to write down names of various criminals?

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: KPL on 10 December 2007, 20:36:19
I don't think that game would sell a lot in other continents other then Asia. It's a bit too mature.

@Rez:
Still, some of the plottwists were done very nicely.

But if it's plottwists you want, you really should go see Code Geass.

One season is finished, so you can check it out in one turn. Season two is coming Fall 2008.

It won't be a waste of time! I guess you have to see it at least once.

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: TheRedPriest on 10 December 2007, 23:55:39
Most of what I've read indicates the first half of the story is better paced in the Manga, but the 2nd half is better paced in the Anime (minus the ending).

I might check out the manga sometime, but it's not high on my list.

I saw the first one. It wasn't very good. In fact, it was more unintentionally hilarious.

Light is a much dumber, and emotionally weaker character in the movie, and his plans should not have worked. At all.

Both. Except L, that guy nailed the part.
