Title: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: SB on 3 July 2008, 08:27:38
Seen some rumors flying around furiously lately about this, and posts seem to indicate that it's a port or "Enhanced" version of the first game. Any truth to this? I'm a lazy bum, and didn't bother checking any links on it, since blogs and the like are completely worthless to me, in this era where opinions and rumors apparantly are fact if enough people scream loud enough about something.

Anyone know the REAL deal on this? Is the GREATEST of RPG games coming out to the most popular handheld system released thus far? Or is this just something along the lines of the rumored third game that SE bought the naming rights for and even poked about some ideas and I think a trailer in the past about, and it turned out to just be a big rumor since SE quickly turned around and said it was?  ::)

I clicked that link, and all I got was a clock.

This'll probably be the only chance I get to play CT, since we never got it released here.

Don't complain about the clock. No one complains about the clock. No way no how.

I love how it even has the classic tick tockin'

I found out through a friend after he found the site. I have never been so happy for a remake!

I could never get into Chrono Trigger in the first place...

It just seemed boring to me.

I'm honestly with Abe. But I'm willing to give it another try.

Great, now I have to buy another #####ing DS.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Majikn on 3 July 2008, 17:33:22
Are we sure this is a complete remake? I read some random place that it was just a port with added touch screen stuff. Not to say that that place was right or wrong, but I really have no idea what I'm doing and I didn't want to put too much time into researching it.

Even then, I guess, it's still a portable Chrono Trigger. And I haven't played that game, so I'm sure it's worth a try.

Ah, one of my favorite games which has no relation to my user name whatsoever no not at all. I dunno exactly what they think they're going to do here... I bet it won't be anywhere NEAR as awesome as the Resurrection project was going to be before they axed it with corporate magic.

Still, portable CT can't be too bad.
I bet they put almost no effort into it, though. I'm absolutely certain they think of the Chrono series as a waste of money.
but then square have always been idiots

Heres the info I've found.

-Its a port with some added features
-New dungeons etc.
-Theres a multiplayer setting
-Its going to be released this holiday season
-Its freakin' Chrono Trigger, be happy

-Its going to be released this holiday season

This holiday season in North America, btw. It's been confirmed.

The North American website (http://na.square-enix.com/ctds/) is also up, within hours of the Japanese one.

I've never beaten Chrono Trigger so I'll get this just to finish it off. I wonder if Square-Enix will retranslate it...

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: preventerWIND on 3 July 2008, 20:27:57
Probably, they'll probably put in the missing dungeon, the singing mountains.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Mikero on 3 July 2008, 21:12:31
I never finished Chrono Trigger. I got stuck early on, in the future somewhere before getting the robot. I can understand people thinking it was a bit boring, but I at least got into enough that I've always wanted to replay it it and finally beat it and show Lavos who's boss, so I'll be checking this one out fo' sheez.

It really weirds me out that the sound isn't timed correctly with the clock on those sites.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Chron on 3 July 2008, 21:41:28
Probably, they'll probably put in the missing dungeon, the singing mountains.

You think they might use that second battle theme, too?
Still, seems pretty lazy of them.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?

Singing mountain wasn't the only lost dungeon.

There was also an arena in the ruined future.

So there's a countdown on the Japanese site. And having done the math which I assume is correct, something's going to happen to the site in about four days. Someone want to check my math? Me thinks it might be a sight launch.

No, those scans are from the SNES version. The Magazine used the SNES game to reveal the DS version to the public.

I doubt the DS version will look much different, however.

Post by: MOX on 7 July 2008, 02:04:15
I'll be sad if they dont atleast do some alpha blending with the effects or modify the music from the SNES version.

Last place where I left off was when I returned to the present after finishing whatever in the future. Got stuck after then. I think I'll try this version though.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: preventerWIND on 7 July 2008, 02:15:43
I could do without the Akira Toriyama art style in the new version.

It wouldn't be CT without it, I liked it.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Edgecrusher on 7 July 2008, 02:23:43
Same here. It's part of what the game is to me.

Of course, I was playing Chrono Trigger before I had been exposed to any of his other work, so as far as I'm concerned, CT owns that style.

Besides, the art permeates not just the character design for the main characters, but the general design of the game and all of it's characters.

If you removed Akira Toriyama, you would have to visually reinvent the entire game, and that would kill it for most of it's fans.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?

I'm not a big fan of Akira Toriyama, but like Edge says, it's part of Chrono.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: preventerWIND on 7 July 2008, 04:07:12
In terms of nostalgia, I love it. Like when I watch an episode of DBZ, can't hate it. But otherwise it's pretty bad.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Chron on 7 July 2008, 04:12:54
His art style has its flaws, but it's extremely iconic and recognizable.

If they took him out of the mix... it would look like Chrono Cross, maybe.
I liked Cross, but that would kill Trigger. Well, not really.

Hard to kill such a good game.

I'm not going to be happy with just a direct port now.
If they spent the effort on up-converting FF4, which is probably one of the WORST games Square has ever made, then they better update CT, damn it.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Mikero on 7 July 2008, 05:42:07
I find FF4 better than, oh... Almost every other FF game. I mean, everything after the sixth is garbage anyway, and only some in the first six are good. But FF4 is like actually a pretty wicked game, especially compared to the rest.

I could do without the Akira Toriyama art style in the new version.

It wouldn't be CT without it, I liked it.
Same here. It's part of what the game is to me.

Of course, I was playing Chrono Trigger before I had been exposed to any of his other work, so as far as I'm concerned, CT owns that style.

If you removed Akira Toriyama, you would have to visually reinvent the entire game, and that would kill it for most of it's fans.

Right. I love the sprites, I love the how the actual game looks. And I never noticed the Toriyama art until it was SHOWN to me. So I'm not talking about changing the art direction of the actual game. I'm talking about just changing like... Boxart, and stuff in the game's booklet and such.

In terms of nostalgia, I love it. Like when I watch an episode of DBZ, can't hate it. But otherwise it's pretty bad.

I don't mind it in original Dragonball, or even in some of DBZ. And it's fine when it isn't moving, a la mangas and such.

Actually the only CT thing I mind in that art style is specifically that Crono looks completely Saiyan and Lucca looks entirely like Bulma. It's not really the designs I have a problem with at all, it's just that the faces are so samey. And the Crono/Saiyan hair gets a bit ridiculous.

So, I could take or leave such things. There are ways to take out such things from an art style WITHOUT actually changing it enough that it's oh so different.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Vinchenz Rock on 7 July 2008, 05:46:30
Akira Toriyama draws like, the same five characters over and over again.

That said, I still like his art style.

But I digress, because as we all know that to speak Nantukka's name is to taunt her fury. Some say Sir Edward of Sizorhans (or Steady Eddy Always Ready, as his friends called him) lives on in our hearts.

There is, however, very much to be said about the bridge trolls of northern Wessex. Recently, a small group of forty has proposed a "mythical creatures awareness" rights group, promoting the fair treatment and recognition of near-human-like beings and primordial ooze across the globe.

Of course, there is no greater ooze in the world than that of the comic genius, Ultros, who is playing to day in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has butchered the Canadian national anthem on more than one occasion.

Time for a thread re-rail.

I can't wait for this. I hope it'll be more than a simple port but it seems unlikely. Regardless I'll be picking this up. I've waited for a portable Chrono Trigger game for quite a while.

God, Lavos was probably the coolest villain to never actually speak I've ever seen.

I mean the game perfectly builds up his greatness and power and he never does anything directly until 1999 except in those weird attempts to access him where he goes berserk and destroys stuff by shooting fire up.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: saldite on 28 July 2008, 07:59:01
I would probably feel a little more excited about this game if it wasn't just a port of the SNES game.
Despite being a fan of the Chrono series, I most likely won't get this. I see no point seeing as I own the original.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Edgecrusher on 28 July 2008, 08:02:25
Decent sales of ports are the only thing that might get us a sequel.

This will be the 3rd version of Chrono Trigger I've paid for now.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: saldite on 28 July 2008, 08:23:21
I already realize this.
I just don't feel like paying $35-40 for the same version of this game.
"But saldite, there's a new dungeon!"
 Woopdy-friggin'-do!
That doesn't really add much context to the game. I would probably buy the game if Square had done to it what they did for FF4DS.
The only way I see myself getting this game again is if I have money to spare at the time of its release and I have nothing better to buy, or if I can get it for free via gifting, contests, or other such methods.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: ker-plop on 16 August 2008, 04:22:43
What I'm worried about is that they'll change the script and make everybody sound redundant and colorless.  This bothers me to no end.  I mean, they did it to the GBA remake of FF6, and all of Kefka's best lines disappeared.  I'd hate to see the same thing happen here.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: saldite on 16 August 2008, 04:26:42
Meh...
I'm not worried about the script. The game was already translated fairly well so they'll prolly just change a few words or lines here or there. Otherwise, I have a feeling it's going to stay relatively similar to the original.

I also change my original opinion on purchasing this. Chances are I'll end up getting it now 'cause I don't see too much else with appeal on the winter agenda. But that may always change, of course...

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: ker-plop on 16 August 2008, 04:41:15
Considering I thought FF6's script was just fine in its SNES form, the fact that they changed it at all makes me worry for Chrono Trigger.  They called it "updating," but I can hardly say it was an improvement.

For analogy, let's compare the scripts of X1 and IHX.  This is what I'm worried about for Trigger; that the script will change and make the characters needlessly wordy, having them ramble on in complex sentences that nobody would use in everyday conversation.  I can understand Sigma being like that, but not X, Zero or most of the Mavericks.

On the plus side, I've been playing an unofficial direct translation of Trigger, and most of it seems exactly the same.  They did a good job the first time round, so I hope they don't muck it up.

I care.

DON'T BE WEABOO.

*cough*

Anyway, FF6 on the SNES was very heavily localized, by God Ted Woosley, same with Chrono Trigger but he didn't have so many restrictions as with FF6 for CT.

FF6 on the GBA was more closer to the original Japanese script, borrowing just a few elements from Ted's script (like the names). If Square-Enix decides to retranslate, expect a script closer to the original Japanese one (or a script that`s as wacky as the Dragon Quest stuff, seeing as its made by the same people).

Maverick Hunter X was a retcon rewrite.  Chrono Trigger will, at WORST, get a FF4DS style rewrite, which corrected some errors and just SOUNDED better without changing any of the plot.

Unless of course they try to shoehorn in more in game stuff to make Chrono Cross fit better, but if it's just what they did for the PS1 Port, that can be easily ignored.

I haven't played the DS remake of FF4, so I'm setting it up against what I have played... and if it's anything like FF6's GBA incarnation, I'm very bothered.

All I want is for the characters to sound like they used to, as opposed to sucking out personality and tossing in extra words.

Other than a few instances of censoring a scene or two, to the best of my knowledge, the retranslation of FF6 for GBA wasn't bad at all.

He says something along the lines of using the keys to unlock a door to "AN ACTUAL GOOD GAME AHAHAHA" and then Harley Quinn runs after him and she's all "OH MISTA K, YEH' SO FUNNY"

The fact that I haven't played the original is the only reason I MIGHT be interested in getting this, anyway.

I'm interested because I never finished the original, and didn't really get far I don't think. But I liked as much as I saw of it.

I got stuck somewhere in the dystopian future.

<3 I'm rabid about Chrono Trigger. Though I'm not sure exactly what they could do to make it BETTER on the DS... I have an original copy for the Super Nes so I doubt I'd buy it...

They did this on the PSX.

When they remake one of those #####ty Final Fantasy games, they upgrade it.
And they don't pay attention to fan projects to update them, either, because they all suck.

But when it comes time to cash in on Chrono Trigger, one of the few games they made that's actually decent,  they do nothing to it.
Maybe it's a good thing. I mean, it is Square.

It's unforgivable what they did to the Musashi games, and I hazard a guess they'd do the same to any future Chrono anything.

tl;dr

I'd be mad if there was any potential for Square to make it better.

I don't know, I just remember it was the first time in the future there, and it was early on in getting there, and I couldn't go anywhere without everyone dying in random battle.

Scripted battle.

And yeah, that's the first place where enemies start to react violently to certain skills and attacks.

I'm not sooo sure it was a scripted battle because I'd move up, and get attacked by some monster(s). So reset or whatever. Move down this time. Aguhsafjsndaldasdasdascgvdd dead by random (maybe) mon-stars.

Chrono Trigger has more than just a new dungeon (http://kotaku.com/5081731/chrono-trigger-ds-has-new-ending)

A new ending AND a new character mode. This is one hell of a port..

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Edgecrusher on 13 November 2008, 00:52:08
Agreed. Maybe the expected scope of games these days is what does it. When you have to fit so much stuff into a game, you have to break everything down into teams. Sure, that's how it was done in the past two, but it wasn't so... compartmentalized?
Smaller groups tend to have better chemistry and a stronger unified vision.

Too many cooks pissing in the soup, or however that colloquialism goes.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger on the DS?
Post by: Mikero on 13 November 2008, 02:30:38
I think one cook pissing in my soup is too many, but yeah you're completely right. It leads to games that really don't gel into a whole solid piece. They make games today like quilts.

MM9 must've had a small team.

So... they changed the translation. It's a lot of small things, but some of them are really bugging me.

Example: It's not Magus' army anymore. He is still Magus, but when humans refer to him, he's the Fiendlord.
Lame.

On the plus side, once you get used to the new menu navigation, it's pretty streamlined.

I haven't gotten to the new content yet, but I'll report back on it once I have.

Okay, I thought Fiendlord was bad, but they've completely abandoned the term "Mystic" and replaced it with Fiend.

Calling them Mystics made them feel like a separate race. Calling them Fiends makes them seem like monsters.

I know I'm nitpicking, but I don't understand why they felt that was a change that needed to be made.

Having now played through both new dungeons, I can say they were... well...

The one thing that I thought the original Chrono Trigger did really well was it's side quests. They weren't necessary, but they bagged you some neat stuff, and it was always stuff that had been set up previously. The items felt like they had history, like some sort of ancient and powerful relic only spoken of in legend. That and the characters the side quests involved had already been established, so you had at least some reason to care. In short, the game did a really good job of creating a cohesive universe.

The new side quests don't possess those qualities. The first one that becomes available is a village of little interchangeable reptites (who are going to become extinct shortly anyway, so who cares?) that send you on various fetch quests across five different areas. You can get some decent items from it, but it ends up feeling like a total chore, and it smacks of lazy design.

The second area is unlocked once you beat the game, and is slightly better, but not by terribly much. It has better items (though once you've beaten the game, who really cares about those?), but the dungeon itself is just a rehash of areas you've already been, with the same enemies in the same locations. Every now and then you'll come across a new room, but that happens so infrequently that it hardly masks the "copy/paste" nature of the area. Once you get to the end, you're treated to a new final boss and a new ending.

The new boss and ending are the sole saving graces of the bonus dungeons, but the whole thing feels so tacked on that the game almost fares better without them.

Oh. And there's an arena where you can train monsters. That's about all the mention that feature warrants.

Nutshell: Chrono Trigger is a classic, and to this day remains on my list of "Best Games Ever". The new features barely justify the purchase if you already own a copy on the SNES or PSX, but if you don't own it or haven't played it, this is a fantastic way to do so without spending stupid amounts of money or resorting to illegal measures...

...just keep in mind that some elements where added in later. The original was golden; this remake is the same amount of gold, but with some ugly brass ornamentation.

I still really want to play but I feel like I've done everything now. I LOVE CHRONO TRIGGER! IT MAKES ME SOB THAT I FINISHED IT.

I even made a remix of Schala's Song as proof of my love (http://snarey.250free.com/SchalaSongShorter.mp3)

Yeah, it's very much not the same experience as playing Chrono Trigger.

That's not to say that it isn't a good game. They both did a fantastic job of crafting their worlds, and they both have tons of replay value.

Combat just feels much different, and the plot is pretty convoluted, but if you can sort it all out, it's actually fairly brilliant.
