Vader's helmet looks too small.

Aw, poop. Vader is on the PS3 version.

VADER'S SOUL EDGE IS GONNA BE SWEEEET!

This is odd, but freakin' neato.

How can something so awesome make me want to slit my wrists so badly?
This is seriously going too far. A line has been crossed. The line that separated joy from disgust, it's been crossed. Whatever though, I think the Soul Series, as much as I love it, is going to end with this one. I can't see it surviving such a long leap to a Galaxy far, far away. I believe it will fall short halfway and fall into the pits of crossover Hell. This isn't the first thing I've seen that I haven't liked about the comming addition to the series. I mean, have you seen how much Nightmare's design is getting screwed?

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: ASR on 11 January 2008, 02:39:01
As odd as it sounds, I think it actually fits quite nicely.

I like the choices for Yoda and Vader, though. I'm glad they didn't use Luke or Darth Maul.
I'm not a big fan of Star Wars, but it's impossible to deny that both Yoda and Vader are great and well-developed characters in comparison to everyone else in the movies. Yoda's a bit more flat than Vader, though.

The problem is they're from a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far way. A galaxy full of futuristic technology. It makes no sense that they'd be running around in Europe and Asia during the late 16th century. I mean Link, Heihachi, and Spawn actually made some sense being there, but this is just too far.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Mikero on 11 January 2008, 04:48:26
Neither Link, nor Spawn made any sense being in that era or place. And I'm unclear on Heihachi's full story as I've forgotten it since I hate him, but I'm sure he had no place there either.

Link is from a totally different planet or something. Spawn is from some modern city. Heihachi is modern too, I think?

Anyway I'm not a big fan of this Star Wars deal. Mainly 'cause I know Vader's just gonna be another Nightmare, and I'm not a Nightmare fan. Yoda will probably be faster than Talim. That's just wrong because Talim pushes the edge of speed in those games enough already.

Now, I didn't really read the article. Just the headline, a bit about which version has which, and checked out the pictures. Anything about a Wii version? Wii could get either a crap character (Maul, Dooku), because unless it's Luke or Obi, there aren't many other principal Jedi/Sith in the movies that I think are good enough for the spot... Except Kit Fisto, but he's not well-known so no dice.

Soul Calibur II is still the best.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Captain Sanoguchi on 11 January 2008, 04:57:09
I don't think Wii is getting Soul Calibur 4. I think Namco just tossed Soul Calibur Legends at Nintendo so they'd maybe not notice them handing Soul Calibur 4 to Microsoft and Sony.

I don't know. All I know is what I played of Soul Calibur III was not so hot.

Well the Soul series is also in the past...so they made a pass by of Earth and detected an energy signal (Soul Edge) so huge they decided to check it out?

Hmm. As long as Cassandra gets another good story I'm happy regardless of the rest.

Well Link even in his own stories bridges dimensions or alternate universes fairly easily like going to the dark dimension.

Heihachi was supposedly pulled into the past by a piece of Soul Edge that survived into his time or it might have. In the end his story was a dream sequence apparently.

Spawn made the least sense but even his boss (Maleglobia?) wanted to get Soul Edge's power to add it to his own and since it doesn't exist in that universe Maleglobia opens a portal and sends Spawn to obtain it.

They all made enough sense and even Star Wars makes sense kind of since both stories do supposedly take place in the past and well there's nothing to stay Starships don't usually pass Earth and take no notice of it until they notice Soul Edges presence.

In case none of you have noticed, the "story" to the SC games is beyond-a-joke mental anyway, so it really doesn't matter who gets tossed in there.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Voulnet on 11 January 2008, 21:18:57
I don't care about the timeline or anything. That midget green filth should never be included, darth vader is a little bit acceptable, but Yoda... Damn it.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Majikn on 11 January 2008, 21:28:43
Nope. Yoda's better.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Voulnet on 11 January 2008, 21:36:00
Nope, Yoda fits as much as that stupid little dino in old Tekken games. There are new characters that can fit the timeline, there are others that don't fit the timeline or story but fit the fighting/gameplay. Yoda doesn't fit anywhere. I just hope you don't have to unlock something cool by using him.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Majikn on 11 January 2008, 22:18:43
So... you're discriminating against midgets?

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!

But Yodas the coolest midget since....their ARE no other awesome midgets.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Johncarllos on 11 January 2008, 23:52:44
I don't give a crap as long as they are balanced characters.

I'm best with Nightmare, Astaroth, or Talim, so I don't really give a crap.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Mikero on 12 January 2008, 01:31:50
I'm best with Talim, as she was the first character I ever used (back when I first played it in an arcade before the console versions were released) and I'm pretty good with Maxi. I'm not bad with other characters but I'm not so hot with the slow guys. But I don't care 'cause I'm never into slow guys.

They all made enough sense and even Star Wars makes sense

I have to disagree. Okay here we go hatcha-cha-chaaa;

Link's dimension travelling always just brings him to other dimensions of Hyrule. Or at least places that look and/or act just like people do in Hyrule. If he ever went anywhere REALLY different, we'd have seen him in like the future or on alien worlds. Even if I'm willing to buy that he dimension travelled to Earth, that's pretty weak, and off the top of my head the only non-Hyrule dimension he traveled to was the place in Majora's Mask. And that's moot because that game is Majora Ass.

Heihachi is a gay and so is his face and his is the only plausible story being that they had the testes to admit it was totally bogus, but I could've accepted a piece of Soul Edge bringing him back anyway I guess. Moving on.

Spawn's story actually kind of works. Spawn has been sent to "Elseworlds" or something all the time (as I can tell by the amount of different versions of Spawn there are in the toys at my work, Gunslinger Spawn FTW by the way). But last I knew, the devil was his "boss". 'Course I don't read Spawn anyway.

As for Vader and Yodes, the galaxy in Star Wars is not even completely explored in the BOOKS (many of which take place whole GENERATIONS after Luke Skywalker is gone), I've heard they have no clue where the Chiss come from. So there's no way Darth Vader or Yoda (who are both dead OMGSPOILER) would ever find their far far way over to OUR galaxy and then to our backwater solar system and land on our tiny planet during their lifetime. Doesn't happen.

All that said, I really don't care about how plausible each person's story is. As Abe said the SC stories are pretty back asswards in the first place.

Nope, Yoda fits as much as that stupid little dino in old Tekken games.

HEY! Gon Gon may not fit in, but he's the damn sheriff as far as anyone's concerned. That dino kicks the biggest of asses. But yes he doesn't fit in at all and is a total cheap out character with no business in the game.

Yoda will definitely be ridiculously agile and dodgy (in a good way, not in a you-can't-trust-him way). He'll fit in with the gameplay but he'll be pushing it.

I only played Gon Gon to piss a few retarded friends off.

It was funnier when it was more underground. I'm not someone who stops liking something because it becomes popular because that is stupid, but I feel the quality went down.

I don't think I'll even consider being anywhere near a LAN party. Don't get me wrong; I get it. But I doubt it's my bag.

I think it's about as hit-or-miss as it ever was.

Maybe I'm harder to please since high school too.

I forget which one of my gaming magazines talked about it (I'll look it up tomorrow or the day after that), but word has it that a few months after the game is released, you'll be able to buy the console-exclusive characters through PS3 and 360's marketplaces (much like how you can get New Goblin for Spider-Man 3 over Live Marketplace even though originally he was a PS3 exclusive).

In other words, PS3 owners will be able to buy Yoda a few months later, 360 users will be able to get Vader. They also hinted at other Star Wars characters begin available, including Jango Fett. Why him, I don't know.

Gaytown, USA. Population: Soul Calibur 4.

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!
Post by: Edgecrusher on 15 February 2008, 17:10:18
The potential implications of having exclusive characters that are allied with good and evil, combined with the nature of the competing systems, just occurred to me.

Are we to assume that the 360 is good and that the PS3 is evil?...

...or that the PS3 was good but became evil?...

...or that the PS3 is inherently more powerful/cool than the 360?...

...or that the 360 is a Muppet?...

...or that the PS3 has a sexy black mans voice?...

...or that when all this is said and done, both systems will be dead, but will still hang around in spirit?...

Or that...

*wanders off rambling to himself*

Title: Re: Soul Calibur IV, I am your New Challenger!

Vice versa on the systems, there, I believe. 360 has Yoda, right?

Now while I was thinking of starting a new thread for SV IV since their already was one I thought I'd post here.

Now it's just about a month left until the game's release and the trailers for the game have been coming out.

As much as I felt it was odd for the Star Wars characters to be in the game they do seem to have been balanced enough thanks to how the Force has been oncorporated in the game.

Also the idea that you can damage your opponents armor somehow and make it last the fight looks fun as hell.

II was more balanced and controlled better.

Post by: Mikero on 4 July 2008, 01:41:24
Character creation was a good idea implemented horribly. Actually, my friend forgot to give me his PS2 memory card when he lent me the PS2 (which I have sketchily rigged to work with old iBook parts) so when he gave it to me he gave it to me in the SC3 case, so I guess I'm borrowing that too. Might have to try it again.

Posted on: 30 June 2008, 22:59:59

I have to take that back a bit. I just popped in Soul Calibur III on PS2 today (friend lent it, with the rest of that stuff) and I'm playing it a bit right now. I've successfully created a DAMN good looking Mikero twice (one as a ninja, and one as a monk, because ninjas don't have the option to use nunchucks in it so I need both a swords & shuriken version and a nunchuck version) and I've been playing on free practice with him/them. And he is sweeeeet.

But I remember it being worse than this when it came out (last time I played), so maybe a lot of stuff was unlocked. I also remember what you could do with created characters wasn't all that hot, so maybe that's it. I'll re-explore the game. The character creation is well made, but if you can't really use them well then it's no so hot.

Unrelated to Soul Calibur, there's a CastleVania game that looks and plays like Soul Calibur coming out for Wii only called CastleVania Judgement.

Supposed to have online, and a bunch of characters from all of the games...

Looks good, actually.

...

Didn't want to make a new topic about it. <_<

It's going to be terrible me thinks. The characters look like something out of kingdom hearts, especially Alucard. The game is a good idea, but its going to be a let down IMO.
