I really like it, I agree with your art teacher. I'm not saying that you look bad, but you can tell that you didn't try to make yourself look good. Which is very brave, and unusual for someone to do when they are making a self portrait.

Sano's probably the only one on this site that I would be comfortable calling ugly in a mean way.

But I'm not going to do that (despite the fact that I sort of already did) because I'm not an asshole.

We love you, Sano. Deep down inside, really, we do.

On opposite day!

Really, though... I like the portrait. It's got a very smooth style that I'm sort of fond of, and it's clean enough to have it's own... well, style. I like it.

Taaaaaaaake oooooooon meeeeeee!

Vincenzo's mobile went off in class today and that's his ringtone. I recognized it and so did our prof and he was like "Is-Is that 'Take On Me'?" and Vincenzo said "Yeah. As if you recognized it" and our prof said "... I lived through it."

Was funny.

I'm the same way, except I only intentionally act like an ass to be funny. If I said something cruel, it's not to be an outright dick.

In all seriousness on the picture, I'd say the same. You did good a job on working on the detail there. It's just... weird.

OK well I can't tell how accurate it is or isn't  but the hair looks like a cartoon or anime since it's all in blocks, or clumps rather, which is something you want to do to make animation easier, you want to go all out on portrait- You still make hair groups but not just one big mass. You should start putting an eyeline down in rough stages because one eye is higher than the other. The ear is big and the shoulders seem small.

The shoulders are bigger actually, the whole thing wouldn't fit on my scanner.
I don't really have an excuse for the other mistakes though.

Yeah, like I said over in a PM, I wasn't calling the picture ugly when I said it was weird. Maybe unique would've been a better word for it. It's good work.

Why're y'all hatin' on Mr.Hustle? He's an alien space thing or something, he's a perfectly normal whatever he is.

Toaster and Chainsaw man are normal though.

Their names are Toasty and Chainsaw Face... And what about Lacey? Does she look weird?

If you talk to someone who doesn't know jack about art, they'll be like "WHOAH THAT'S AMAZING" and sure it might make you happy but in the end even you know deep down inside how wrong you are.
A good artist is an even better critic and will help your artwork improve as well.
And of course there's those people with at least a basic understanding of art so they criticize you, too, which is still great. Get over it if it sounds negative, you pansy.

In fact, you know it's decent if someone takes time out of their schedule to comment on it and try to give you tips.

All we get is criticism in my program, and they rarely bother to say what's good unless it's important to know it so you don't change that when you're fixing the what seems like everything that's wrong with what you show them. Sure, after a while everyone is walking around in a depressed stupor, but it works out (I guess). You just gotta deal with it. But it's harder online as you can't possibly read someone's tone perfectly correct.

Well everyone's off balance and are not standing on the same plane. Waist down proportion is off but waste up isn't bad. Covering up half the face and using fists for everybody don't hide that you're not confident in drawing/you can't draw those things; In fact, they're the #1 sign of that.

I can't tell if the chainsaw man is facing sideways or forward but I assume the blade (well, chain thing) comes out where his face would be. Either way, don't draw a side profile or straight on view for anything unless it's necessary, always go for 3/4 views. So you'll want to draw him with a foreshortened 'blade' and multiple sides on the boxy part, you want to show 3D depth in your work.

Drawing on paper is essentially tricking the eye; You have force depth. Making the illusion of three dimensions in two.

I'd draw what I mean for you if I wasn't isn't finals and totally knackered right now.

'Kay, noted.
But'cha know what? I wish people would look past the drawing and actually look into the drawing, ya know, see what it is and stuff. I mean, that's why I draw and stuff.

Well yeah, that's pretty much it.
I don't really draw just for the sake of art really, I kind of draw just because I enjoy it, and it passes the time, but the real reason I draw is just so that ideas I have can be in a form that others can see. I'd really like to improve my skills just so I'd be able to convey my ideas in a clearer form. Ya dig?
