MMM
« on: 5 January 2013, 20:52:46 »

Ah... I'm pretty sure most of you will remember me, since it wasn't that long ago and I wasn't overly inactive, but I used to be on MMM all the time...

I'm just making this thread because I kind of need to say this somewhere where someone can relate. I really miss the matrix.

I joined when I was much younger, almost a kid, and I didn't know much at all back then (not that I do now...), and the Matrix really taught me a lot of things. For example, before joining MMM, I'd type, as Xero'd say, like a sped, hah...
I also learnt a lot of english, it being my second language.
MMM improved my taste in games, music, humor, and even my taste in people. It made me feel part of something.

Back in the day MMM was about the only important thing on the internet to me. (Then later came porn and after that social networking. Boo.)
I'd literally spend hours on the forum. Every once in a while, I'd even go to Mchat and go around it just to see it (I was never around when Mchat was all the rage, I came a little bit after that). And I actually never found anything similar to Mchat on the internet.

Maybe I'm idealizing it since it was an important part of my childhood (Childhood?) the same way I remember Diablo II graphics as good as Skyrim's... But you guys, and some people who won't read this, are probably going to be forever imprinted in my memories. It sounds kind of silly, but I'm sure when I'm like 60 or whatever, I'll be sitting in some lawnchair and randomly say "Man, MMM was the #####." or something...

I don't know. I'm not sad or anything, I guess the forum died along with the series, and I don't think I'd truly bring it back if I could since it would never be the same... But yeah... That's all.

Thank you all for the good times.

These types of communities are infinitely superior to the Facebook ##### we have now.  I think online personas are an awesome mix between fantasy and reality and let you have fun.  They also had enough control that they're not the free for all places like the chans can be so you don't have trolls completely #####ting things up.

There's no doubt we had a ton of cool people through here over the years (and a few are still here HA!) and we had a ton of fun.

Sadly, with today's youth being mostly autistic and a lack of new Mega Man games makes it hard to keep traffic going in places like this.

Still, I think a lot of us still lurk here, we just need to be more vocal.  We have a tight community here, and probably will until it just dissappears one day, in the far flung future!  WHOOOOOOSH!!!

Lack of games I think is what keeps this community quiet. How many times can you discuss "Who's your favorite character?" or "What's your favorite Mega Max X game?"

On the plus side, if Capcom keeps devaluing Mega Man, even I might be able to afford the rights to it!

I miss 4 monitors :(

We do two monitors at work, some are tablet monitors. It's great.

I'm 'bout to have a laptop-tablet monitor thing going on at home. Well excited.

I want a tablet so that I can use it as an external network display but still be able to use it's touch screen functionality on my PC windows. A Nexus 10 would be perfect for that, or a surface pro.

Clarification: Tablet monitors are for drawing. They're the #####. They don't work or act at all like tablet computers, which I am not getting right now.

But yea a Nexus 10 would probably be really dope for that.

I'm just saying that a tablet is cheaper than a tablet monitor.

Laptops with the touch-screens are pretty kickass though. That's the only time windows 8 really works.

Windows 8 can S my D.

Save my documents.

How many tablets can actually be USED as a tablet monitor? Is it just a matter of software? I mean, I can bet that the technology is more... better with the tablet monitors, but is it possible to create some sort of crappy simile with like an iPad or a Samsung Touchmeplease 2.0?

I mean, I really don't plan to do any drawing. I'm just curious.

I'm just saying that a tablet is cheaper than a tablet monitor.

Not really.
Not all of them.

The tablet monitor on it's way to my place (Yiynove MSP19U) is about the going rate of a tablet PC. Regardless I only said that to clarify, because I forget that when I say "tablet" most people think of a touchscreen device. I wasn't really pitting them against each other, but if I was going to...

How many tablets can actually be USED as a tablet monitor? Is it just a matter of software? I mean, I can bet that the technology is more... better with the tablet monitors, but is it possible to create some sort of crappy simile with like an iPad or a Samsung Touchmeplease 2.0?

Yes, and you're correct; It's crappy. Nah actually, it's only crappier.

A few people I know and work with have made some incredible things on iPad 4 or Galaxy Note 10.1 but it is a few, and they are insanely good even among the mega talented. Basically John's right in that you need the right software or apps or whatever, but with a lot of them you're missing pressure sensitivity and without that it's worthless.

HOWEVER there's a lot of ways to fix that issue, it just ends up costing a bit more, like for special pens and stuff. I did a lot of research into this recently and I'm probably gonna make a big Facebook post all about the process when this monitor comes in this week, but I polled a bunch of animators and other artists I know to help me make a decision.

In the end I went with Yiynova MSP19U tablet monitor, as I said earlier. The reviews for this thing are incredible, it's making huge waves in the tablet monitor scene mainly for two reasons;

1) It's actually much more responsive than a Cintiq (WACOM's tablet monitor, the leading standard).
2) It's about 1/3 the price, toppling the monopoly.

That leaves me with enough money to get a tablet PC with peripherals for drawing on-the-go and a substantial amount of scrill left-over than if I went with a Cintiq 22HD or 24HD.

I'm somewhat disappointed with my Nexus 7 for taking hand-written notes.  I find it fairly difficult to get it to detect subtle movement of the stylus.  I'm not sure if the Nexus just isn't good enough for that sort of thing, or if my stylus sucks.  My tablet laptop used to be able to handle my hand-writing, but now the hardware always fails after a few minutes of using a stylus (I will never buy an HP laptop again...).

Anyone else have any thoughts on just simple note-taking on (portable) tablets, like Nexusees or iPads?  This might be something I eventually would like to have.

Do styluses even work on apple products?  I know they intended people to use their stubby meat sticks to paw at the displays and you know how Apple hates letting people not use their products exactly how Apple designed them.

My only real gripe with my phone is that it has no stylus.  If they're not built to house/hold one it's just completely impractical to carry one with you to do so.  Even if the phone cases had a slot for them (none do) it would still be pretty awkward to use.  Hopefully by the next time I upgrade the market will be stronger for stylus devices.

I have a friend who has a phone with a stylus.  The phone is slightly larger than an ordinary smartphone, though.  A Galaxy something-or-other, I think.  She has a purse, so she just carries the phone and stylus around in that.  Imagine.  Purses.  Clearly we all need to be carrying them around.

I still don't understand what's good about Facebook...

I tried to use Vevo on my Xbox for the first time the other day, and it wanted me to log in, and apparently the only way to get a Vevo account is with a Facebook account...

I don't even know what's going on anymore.

Facebook is generally rubbish.  It's genuinely good for catching up with some long lost friends, but god people go WAAAAY to far with posting stuff sometimes.  And it's now gone full on exploitation with the ads and ##### showing up in news feeds.

I browse Facebook more than I should. It's a good communication tool, but I hate everything else that's forced on you because of it.
Honestly, assuming people can reach you just fine otherwise, or even if they can't, you're not missing out.

yeah man facebook is just a communication tool, like e-mail or the phone. it's integral in my life and i don't mind it for a second, nor do i ever feel bothered by it. i think i use it an acceptable amount and i've always been kind of annoyed by the "anti-facebook" mentality.

Facebook is also good if you read a lot of articles/news online.  Generally, you can't read everything posted on the internet, so you just focus on a few blogs are news sites.  But with Facebook, you can post interesting articles, and your friends will also do the same.  Often times you and some friends will be interested in the same thing, and so you can get a lot of information that way without have to wade through useless crap.

That said, you do get a lot of ##### like game-invitations, ads, people "liking" things when in fact they probably never did (it's just Facebook advertising), etc.  You can control this somewhat with your feed-options; otherwise, you just learn to ignore this and search for the important stuff.

But with Facebook, you can post interesting articles, and your friends will also do the same.

It's also good for getting into pissing contests with people who disagree with the views expressed in said articles.

I also use Facebook for school purposes. Our horticulture class has its own group where we generally try to help each other with schoolwork and whatnot. It's also the place where I like to post articles on plant sciences and ethical dilemmas regarding dubious floriculture practices in developing nations (let's all douse our workers with DDT, they'll love it!). I seriously doubt anyone but plant geeks would give a care about that sort of thing, so that's why I try to keep it contained over there...

The normies just want to see pictures of my beautiful, beautiful face.

Only 3rd party stuff (of course). There's a few good ones for drawing, but I don't know how they handle anything else.

Probably the Samsung Galaxy Note, which is ridiculous. I don't know why phones started getting bigger again, but I do find it funny that all tiniest people I know have giant smart phones.
